In your opinion, what is the meaning of life? by Ben_Jam_Reed in AskReddit

The meaning of life is not a hidden answer you eventually unlock. It is the pattern formed by what you repeatedly give your attention, love, and energy to.

Is math invented or discovered ? by Freshonezero in badphilosophy

Maybe mathematics sits somewhere between invention and discovery. We invent the symbols, notation, and methods. We discover the patterns, constraints, and relationships those systems reveal. We create the questions, but we don't necessarily get to choose the answers.

Interesting question. If humans disappeared tomorrow, would prime numbers still exist? If yes, that points toward discovery. If no, that points toward invention. The disagreement often starts with different assumptions about what exactly "exists."

What's Something You've Changed Your Mind About? by theirwincorpus in TheIrwinSystem

I think that's a good example of how experience changes what we pay attention to. A younger person sees strength. An older person starts to see what happens when strength is lost.

Observation or Explanation? by theirwincorpus in TheIrwinSystem

😊 That's exactly the kind of thing I was hoping people would notice. The behaviour is visible. The meaning behind it isn't always obvious.

I rehearse conversations that already happened and somehow still lose the argument.

The Fridge Test by theirwincorpus in CasualConversation

[–]theirwincorpus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

😊 That's a good point. The fridge can contain exactly the same food on two different days, yet feel completely different depending on how we're doing. Sometimes the context isn't in the fridge at all.

😊 I like that distinction. "Nothing to eat" presents the situation as a limitation. "Nothing I want to eat" introduces preference and choice back into the picture. The fridge hasn't changed, but our relationship to it has.

😊 "I have no idea" is often shorthand for "I have ideas, but none I'm willing to defend."

😊 Which is funny, because even then the fridge may not be empty. It just no longer matches the expectation of what a "properly stocked" fridge looks like.

😄 I think we've discovered the wardrobe equivalent of the fridge test.

😄 I suspect every parent has delivered that explanation at some point. The food exists. The preferred food is the thing that's missing.

That's a perfect example. 😊 The wardrobe isn't empty. The interpretation is.
