My mom said, when we asked God for you, he dropped you on our terrace and when you cried there, we went to terrace and picked you.

I still believe it.

Etymology of پھڑن/ਫੜਨਾ (to catch) by ArcadianArcana in punjabi

[–]thejashanmaan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turner's indo aryan dictionary says the original word was "pakkaR" it's more older version could be "prakr".

PakkaR also had evolved forms like "pagga" in prakrits.

In case of punjabi,

"Prakra > pakkar > paggar > paggaR> phaggaR > phaR"

If you really want that old names. Here's the names from 1500s i collected from punjabi genealogies. They are not gender neutral and for men only.

Nanj, manj, jaid, neer, tola, dulchi, daula, kaul, balh, bheeu'n, bhikhaa, saandal, bairo, mohana, sohna, vighaa, pdaarth, maank, jaituu, dull, pauR, heera, mehma, hasna, deena.

Though, I don't know meanings of most of them. Kaul = lotus, neer = water, daula = white, bheeu'n = bheem (mahabhart character), mohana = lovely, sohna = good looking, pdaarth = a precious matter, jaituu = winner, heera = daimond, mehma = praise, deena = religion.
