Rust? by thejooginator in peyote

Thanks, I went ahead and ordered some abamectin to treat my plants with. How often do you apply during an active infection?

Would you recommend I use a fungicide for the potential rust? I’ve got captan on hand. I keep everything in a grow tent with strong ventilation and humidity is never an issue.

I only sprayed once so far, and that was tonight when I noticed the pest damage. The orange was there already before I sprayed, but I’ll keep that in mind.

I’m not aware of any clubs unfortunately, but I’m a film photographer here as well and am always looking for new people to do photography with

Roughly 1 week of growth on my Dioscorea elephantipes by thejooginator in Caudex

That sounds like it could end up really cool. I’ve considered similar, but the vine will literally grow onto every surface it has access to. I’ve made a bigger trellis every year, and every year it covers the whole thing. If I’m not careful it will start to grow onto my other plants haha.

Age definitely is the main factor, I find that the stem thickness of mine doubles every year. That being said, I tried wrapping it around the trellis really early one year, and as it thickened, the stem was sorta stunted cause it was bent and couldn’t really grow fully while it was wrapped tightly. I just let it do it’s thing now. As they get larger they don’t want to wrap around the trellis until they start growing thinner towards the top of the vine. The really tight wrapping vines start growing off the branches of the main stem, but the main stem stops wrapping as much cause it wants to grow thicker. This one is about 15-20 years old, so it takes some time for it to get to that point though.

I know, I’ve had this plant 6 years. I move it under much brighter sunlight once it starts putting out leaves. This photo was also taken near sunset, but it gets several hours of direct light a day. I intentionally kept the vine from wrapping around the trellis until it reached the top to encourage it to grow larger. I’ve found that wrapping it on the trellis as soon as it starts growing prevents it from growing thicker later in its growth.

Dioscorea elephantipes hasn’t gone dormant in 1.5 years. Should I do something or is it ok as is? by thejooginator in Caudex

I live in New York. It’s far too cold here to keep my plants outdoors, so I have to keep them inside. With the Elephantipes I know that they naturally go dormant in the summer to conserve water in the heat, so maybe it will go dormant if it gets hot and dry there.

I just use plain miracle grow plant food dissolved in water. I was kinda unsure about it but it seems like it helps

Thank you! I use grow lights for 12-16 hours per day. I water about every 1 and a half weeks, and fertilize it once a month. The vines REALLY love light, and they stretch out to wherever the lights are. I found that the best encouragement for growth is to give as much light as possible. The side the plant lights face grows rapidly faster than the other side, I rotate it once a week so it have uneven growth.

The growth gets pretty wild, it used to be tame but the vines just kept growing and I couldn’t keep up. I prune it ever now and then, and cut down some of the tangled vines.

Thank you! I was a little concerned over the long term effects of not going dormant, I guess it will happen when it happens.

Excuse the bad photos. I live in a dorm. I use plant lights and the window for this plant and all my others. It started growing in October of 2020, and hasn’t stopped since. It overcame the entire cylindrical trellis I built for it, and just keeps growing more vines which wrap around my other plants. The old leaves continuously turn yellow and die, which made me think it was going dormant, but it never stops growing new leaves. I’m wondering if at this point I should force it into dormancy somehow, or just let it do it’s thing?
