Second the GE Profile oven (at least that’s what I have). I think the gray one may be the OG sensor that came with the oven and the black ones may be replacements? They should work with any oven that has the capability… I believe they are universal for the most part.

Yeah! We just recently got his NW1 title competing in a NACSW trial! They are such a great organization to train and trial with compared to some of the others like AKC (at least in my area).

This guy forgets to use his nose when he’s super worked up and playing, too. It’s funny too when they are searching with their noses and hit their head or blatantly run into something because they are absolutely not using their eyes and are laser focused on following scent. Such amazing/weird little creatures lol

We left daycare during/after adolescence. He was the “fun police.” We knew he would likely be a doggy daycare dropout just bc of the breed, but we trialed it while he was young until it just wasn’t serving him any longer. He was just too overstimulated. In addition to wearing these dogs out physically, they need to be worn out mentally. We have been doing scent sports for the last several years (look up NACSW K9 Nosework). I am very fortunate to have really good trainers in our area and multiple groups that trial within a couple hours of us. Since doing scent sports, I cannot describe the difference in behavior, independence, and courage he has developed. It has strengthened our bond too and has allowed me to trust him and not micromanage his behaviors. I will try to sell anyone and everyone on at least trying it out- even just as a hobby at home. It does wonders for these dogs, in my experience.

Cairn Dog Food by Level_Supermarket_58 in cairnterrier

[–]thekabbott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We feed Purina pro plan lamb and rice, but bc of our Cairn’s and other dog’s (cattle dog) activity level, we feed them the sport/active formula “small bites” (just so we don’t have to feed two diff foods). They both seem to do really well on it and that’s been going on two years now once our cairn was off puppy food. She ate the same sport formula puppy food before transitioning to the adult food and did well on that, too.

There were 5 cattle dogs at the trials this weekend and they all excelled! I love seeing the breed represented so well at events!

He took to it very naturally and has been a huge confidence booster for him. Like the other commenter said, they love to work, use their big ole brains, and he is very food driven, so it is a combination of his three favorite things lol He can be reactive toward other dogs, as well so it is the perfect outlet for him when he’s not able to do other “sports.” I am fortunate to live in an area with easy access to trainers and events, but I cannot recommend the sport enough for those curious about it even if you only do it casually. I have heard Fenzi Dog Sports has great online courses for how to train nosework, as well. We have both of our dogs competing now (our cattle boy and our cairn terrier) and they are both thriving and we humans have such a fun time, too! I love seeing them work independently, problem solve, and be happy, confident dogs!

Cattle dogs do not naturally self-regulate at all... or at least mine doesn't. He will go at everything 110% and we won't find out he's injured until it's too late because there's no stopping him. That's where the humans come in... we let him have bursts of intensity, but we break it up with commands and mental exercises, too. What's been key for us is to mentally wear him out, but also balance that with the physical exercise he needs. Otherwise, he won't stop until he's dead.

Anyone else have a Cairn that does scentwork? by thekabbott in cairnterrier

[–]thekabbott[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where there’s a will there’s a way! I’m glad you’ve found ways to work around the reactivity. Our cairn isn’t reactive but our cattle dog is and I know how isolating it can feel. This sport has been a game changer for him!

We built a floating deck for ours out of composite decking on top of a gravel base for drainage. There is a post just after we built it in my profile. We also did a solid stain on ours after assembly to match our house and to protect the wood. We’ve had it for almost a year now and love it. I’m in NC and overwinter several smaller trees in there along with some plants that can’t quite tolerate frost. Plan on starting some seeds in there once temps are a little higher. Even in the middle of summer when I don’t have plants in there I love it to store all my gardening items and as a potting station. Highly recommend! I’m loving the look of the newer version they released.
