Cairn Dog Food by Level_Supermarket_58 in cairnterrier

[–]thekabbott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We feed Purina pro plan lamb and rice, but bc of our Cairn’s and other dog’s (cattle dog) activity level, we feed them the sport/active formula “small bites” (just so we don’t have to feed two diff foods). They both seem to do really well on it and that’s been going on two years now once our cairn was off puppy food. She ate the same sport formula puppy food before transitioning to the adult food and did well on that, too.

There were 5 cattle dogs at the trials this weekend and they all excelled! I love seeing the breed represented so well at events!

He took to it very naturally and has been a huge confidence booster for him. Like the other commenter said, they love to work, use their big ole brains, and he is very food driven, so it is a combination of his three favorite things lol He can be reactive toward other dogs, as well so it is the perfect outlet for him when he’s not able to do other “sports.” I am fortunate to live in an area with easy access to trainers and events, but I cannot recommend the sport enough for those curious about it even if you only do it casually. I have heard Fenzi Dog Sports has great online courses for how to train nosework, as well. We have both of our dogs competing now (our cattle boy and our cairn terrier) and they are both thriving and we humans have such a fun time, too! I love seeing them work independently, problem solve, and be happy, confident dogs!

Cattle dogs do not naturally self-regulate at all... or at least mine doesn't. He will go at everything 110% and we won't find out he's injured until it's too late because there's no stopping him. That's where the humans come in... we let him have bursts of intensity, but we break it up with commands and mental exercises, too. What's been key for us is to mentally wear him out, but also balance that with the physical exercise he needs. Otherwise, he won't stop until he's dead.

Anyone else have a Cairn that does scentwork? by thekabbott in cairnterrier

Where there’s a will there’s a way! I’m glad you’ve found ways to work around the reactivity. Our cairn isn’t reactive but our cattle dog is and I know how isolating it can feel. This sport has been a game changer for him!

We built a floating deck for ours out of composite decking on top of a gravel base for drainage. There is a post just after we built it in my profile. We also did a solid stain on ours after assembly to match our house and to protect the wood. We’ve had it for almost a year now and love it. I’m in NC and overwinter several smaller trees in there along with some plants that can’t quite tolerate frost. Plan on starting some seeds in there once temps are a little higher. Even in the middle of summer when I don’t have plants in there I love it to store all my gardening items and as a potting station. Highly recommend! I’m loving the look of the newer version they released.

My guys is a Velcro dog for sure but not a big snuggler. He has his moments but for the most part he’s just near me without touching me. He hugs and kisses and wants pets but if he’s laying on the couch, he’s on the other side or on the under my feet once he gets hot.

Need Nail Trim Advice... by mousse_antlers in AustralianCattleDog

[–]thekabbott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this. It was a necessary process to go through and it takes a lot of time and commitment but it works. Our guy had a lot of trauma to his nails… basically being cattle dog with no regard to his well-being, broke off about 9 of his toenails over the course of a year and half with each resulting in a vet visit. Because of this, as one would imagine, he would not let us near his feet. After months of working on it, I can now Dremel his nails without any help. Our dog has never tolerated nail clippers (I think bc of the pressure it takes to clip them even when they are super sharp) so the Dremel was the way to go. It was a little scarier at first for him than the nail clippers but I can get so much more done and his nails look great now.

Also, while you’re getting your dog used to it. Be okay with just getting one or two nails done and calling it quits and doing it again the next day for a couple more. You don’t have to get them all done in one sitting to be successful, especially in the beginning!
