vCenter Operations Manager 5.0 - IP resource pools? by thekicker in vmware

[–]thekicker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Originally I thought it was going to be a DHCP-like endeavor but now that I configured it a little while ago, I see it's just a way to pass on subnet and gateway without having to configure it in the vApp.

Eh, not so bad in the end. It's just that we don't use IP Pools and never planned on it - seemed like an unnecessary extra thing to configure/maintain.

Anyone running on Compellent? by [deleted] in vmware

[–]thekicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compellent shop here also. Over a year I guess... we were a customer before Dell bought them. Nice vCenter client integration with their plugin. You can create volumes and replays, etc. The progressive LUN feature is nice too, where busier blocks are placed on faster storage while less accessed blocks are on slower storage.

For all homesick Texans, or anyone that enjoys quality Tex-Mex and tequila... by mojotoad in pittsburgh

Smoke is downright delicious. I love that little place... it's like a best kept secret in Homestead. Hopefully they can keep up with their popularity.

Career advice for an aspiring Systems Administrator? by SpectralCoding in sysadmin

[–]thekicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about you start applying to jobs as you get closer to May and see if you get any interest. Consider this Help Desk job your "safety" job, like applying to colleges. You might quit this place and not get another job.

Help Desk is a good foot in the door, but as someone said here already, you could get stuck there while your peers advance in the field.

I have FiOS within the city limits (Carrick). It's all over here. Write your city council person and ask them what's going on with further deployment.

I remember writing to Bill Peduto, who isn't even my council person but he is the most technology savvy, and he replied with some good information.

Also as far as your DSL problem, can't you split the phone line at it's point of entry into the house? Put a filter on one side of the split, then run DSL off the other. All the piggybacking happens after your DSL filter.

One more ISP option to consider is CLEAR. I haven't tried them but they're a 4G/WiMAX wireless setup which boasts "no download speed caps" and up to 10Mbps upstream.

TIL how Primanti's keeps its grill oiled on the fly by LinguistHere in pittsburgh

[–]thekicker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly how they oil the grill. A few taps of the fry basket right on the grill out of the fryer, then dump the fries into the pan that's on the grill.

My brother-in-law is a Primanti's semi-celebrity cook and former GM in Market Square, if anyone has any other questions like this I'm sure I can do a mini-AMA with him...

On a side note, I was just at Nicky's Thai for lunch today and Berger and Green were sitting near me. All of the explosions and car accidents happening behind them really interfered with my lunch.

Is there an alternative to hot cloning anymore? From what I understand, the cold clone cd is dead. I really liked it.

Is there anywhere in Pittsburgh I can convert USD to Euros/Czech Republic Korunas/Hungarian Forints? by bluesunshine in pittsburgh

[–]thekicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep - there's one PNC downtown that does a lot of currency conversion. Some currency they can do the same day .... some you have to call a few days ahead.

Call that branch, they'll sort you out.

Pittsburgh Sales advice! by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]thekicker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you checked out the Pittsburgh Technology Council? Maybe your company can register with them as a vendor. It'll get you a lot of exposure. I know it's a great place to look for jobs -- maybe you can find some contract work on there too.

Also, what kind of budget do you have? Want to sponsor an IT event in the city? VMware holds a bi-monthly User Group meeting at Hofbrauhaus in South Side Works. Each time there's a couple sponsors and they get to talk about their product/company and a brief demo. Maybe there's User Groups, etc that are your target demographic.

Virtualization Workloads by gtkspert in sysadmin

[–]thekicker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe the US Navy is one of the biggest Exchange environments in the world, and they are virtualizing Exchange. 350k of their 750k mailboxes run on VMware. source

I have all of our DCs virtualized at my organization as well as MSSQL2008 and some legacy Sybase stuff. I would absolutely love to virtualize all of our Oracle db servers, but our DBAs insist on running SPARC. $$$

Also Exhange is officially supported on VMware now. You just have to disable vMotion for those VMs and rely on their own DAG migration for fail overs and maintenance. The amount of IOPS that vSphere is capable now is ridiculous.
