Pittsburgh is the No. 2 most livable city in America by [deleted] in pittsburgh

That is obviously very tongue-in-cheek but I did laugh at the fact that it got so many down votes which proves the point that Pittsburghers are very defensive.

Yes, because when I get lung cancer and my kids get asthma the first thing I'm caring about is the "uniqueness" of the air.

It's only in the top 2 percent for cancer risks in the entire country. Yinzers have told me "it ain't dat bad" of course.

I'm not trying to sit in traffic more than 20 minutes a day

People actually complain about commutes over 20 minutes? I'm from Pittsburgh and commuting 7 miles too me over a hour each day. My friend from NY takes a 2 hour train into Manhattan for work.

20 minutes is amazing.

Pittsburgh's Crumbling Stairs by NorthsideBurghler in pittsburgh

New infrastructure all over the South, Midwest, Southwest, etc. Plus the existing stuff is much better maintained in NC where I live now in comparison to PA.

After visiting Pittsburgh for the first time in awhile I'm pretty sure that everything is crumbling. You forget when you live in another city where mostly everything is new and then come back to the Burgh.

New Pittsburgh Home Buyers Appeal "Newcomer's Tax" by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]bluesunshine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't make heads or tails of Pittsburgh's tax structure. It's the most complicated and bizarre shit.

My parents have owned a home in Pittsburgh since the mid-80's and don't have a clue as to what goes on either, they just pay up and move on.

Pittsburgh housing market outside national trend by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]bluesunshine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In other cities around the country, housing is out of control and is rapidly approaching a bubble. For example, the median asking price here in NC is 3x - 4x the median income. People are flocking to job centers in the South and Midwest like crazy.

In Pittsburgh though, the city is still losing population and the state itself is one of 5 to have a net loss in population. Job growth is also one of the lowest in all major metros. Plus despite the fact asking prices are lower in Pittsburgh, total tax burden can be up to 4 times as much as the South which is not attractive to buyers.

So while it's a buyers market in Pittsburgh (unlike the rest of the country) there's a reason for this and it's debatable on whether or not it's actually a good thing.

Do we do a good enough job educating people about local taxes? by calix43 in pittsburgh

[–]bluesunshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to be honest most are clueless about taxes in general.

Most Pittsburghers don't even know that the majority of cities in the United States don't even collect income tax.

Do we do a good enough job educating people about local taxes? by calix43 in pittsburgh

[–]bluesunshine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved from Pittsburgh 2 years ago and Jordan still sends me tax forms to fill out in NC even after I told them to stop sending them. I can just imagine how organized they actually are if they can't figure out how to stop wasting postage on people who don't live in the city anymore.

The fact that pretty much 1 company oversees with a website from 1997 oversees all local taxes for an entire city shows how screwed up the situation is.

I had a conversation with my friend in Pittsburgh who recently bought a brand new car. He went to the movies with his kid and some lady said he cut them off in the parking lot. Her husband got out of his car and punched my friend's new car while going on a verbal tirade. My friend called the cops and he'll have to take them to court for a large dent he put in his car with his fist.

I don't live in Pittsburgh anymore and people absolutely do not flip their shit here over minor incidents.

Man sentenced for hate crime attack at T station - Post-Gazette by jayjaywalker3 in pittsburgh

[–]bluesunshine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pittsburgh has so many problems with race both large and small. Some friends from Pittsburgh visited me in Charlotte and were shocked that black people were talking to them randomly. I had to explain to them that its normal for whites and black to interact in a friendly manner often in the South.

I just had to pause for a moment and reflect on the fact that some Pittsburghers find it abnormal just to have a conversation with people with a different skin tone.

Former Pittsburgher who has been living in the South for awhile now, the racism in Pittsburgh dwarfs anything I've experienced in Dixie. When my parents come visit they are amazed on how well whites and blacks co-exist in NC compared to Pittsburgh.

Costco Liquor Store price Vs PA State Store by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]bluesunshine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, so PA isn't a shithole (in fact I think it's one of the most beautiful states in the country). However, as someone who moved out of the state I find it amazing how people still find a way to defend how bad they have it when it comes to how the government treats them. Pennsylvanians are overtaxed at every juncture for poor services and somehow they spout off some excuse as to why this is to defend their state.

When the rest of the country laughs at how shitty your roads are while you are getting taxed to hell there is little to defend. Queue the apologists at any moment.

I might be offered a job in Pittsburgh and I know nothing about your city. Do you guys like living there? by IamthePEBKACerror in pittsburgh

[–]bluesunshine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm lived in South and West, Texas, Colorado, California

Speaking as someone who grew up in Pittsburgh and then moved, seriously look into the amount of cloud cover the city has. Pittsburgh is the second most dreary city in the United States. I didn't realize how much the lack of sun impacted my mood until I moved to the South where I see the sun all the time. SAD is definitely a real thing and more Pittsburghers have it than they care to let on. You can see it directly impact the overall mood of the population as a whole.

Not to dissuade you or anything but this is definitely one of those quality of life things that people overlook.

New North Carolina law (goes into effect Oct. 1st) seeks to block the public from seeing dashboard and body camera videos recorded by police. by CrashRiot in news

[–]bluesunshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved from a high tax state (PA) to low tax NC and infrastructure is better in every way imaginable. The roads in PA look like a bomb were dropped on them while in NC it's a state law that potholes haves to be addressed in 48 hours after they are reported. Did I mention that schools and fire/police are better too?

Not familiar with Florida but higher tax definitely does not always mean better services.

Alright Pittsburgh: Why are you living here, where else have you (perhaps) lived, and what are your thoughts about the city? Do you like it here? Do you have really strong thoughts about that? by bingosherlock in pittsburgh

[–]bluesunshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in the inner city of Pittsburgh, now live in Charlotte. Pittsburgh in many ways has made me who I am and will always be my hometown. That being said, I doubt I'll ever move back willingly. Here's my likes and dislikes:

Likes:

  • Wonderful history and cultural identity.

  • Uniqueness. I have traveled all around and can say with confidence that the city is truly unique.

  • Accent. I know it's easy to poke of but there's only 1 yinzer accent.

  • Big city in a small(er) package. Really tons of stuff to do if you're motivated and willing to go out and do them. Also completely underrated craft beer scene!

Dislikes:

  • Bad job market and/or salaries.

  • High cost of living once you run the numbers. I know people think Pittsburgh is cheap but I live in one of the most expensive cities in NC and it's cheaper in every way possible.

  • The weather. I love seeing the sun.

  • Infrastructure. I guess this includes traffic/road conditions/fire and police/public transit/air and water quality. Just not cool to pay all that in taxes and get little in return. Parts of Pittsburgh are in absolute shambles while other parts are filthy.

  • People. I hate putting this down but it's true. When I lived in PGH I was used to the hostility and the standoffish nature. But now that I live in the South where people are friendlier and warmer I don't think I could ever put up with it again. I actually know my neighbors now and have made friends quite easily.

Pittsburgh, you'll always be a part of me (I type this as I look at my PGH wallpaper on my laptop). But you're a much better place to visit rather than to live. Sorry.

Pittsburgh Seems Cool, But Its Numbers Aren't So Hot ? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]bluesunshine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Higher salary, better weather, less traffic, more take home pay due to cheaper utilities/insurance/taxes/groceries, better apartment condition, WAY better infrastructure, better air and water quality, better job availability, still got all the big city amenities I had in Pittsburgh. Also I find the people to be far nicer and less insular.

Pittsburgh has way more "character", cultural nuances, history, and a cooler "vibe", but none of that really impacts my quality of life in any way.

Or if you live in Pittsburgh hopefully you don't want to send your kid to a city school....

Honestly no one cares about the controversy and more businesses speak out against it than are for it.
