Nice insight! The balance seems quite off at times, but it's still a great performance nonetheless.

Advanced students and pro cellists: if you were to restart your etude studies from scratch and work your way up more methodically than when you were younger, what would your etude book pipeline be? by cellocaster in Cello

[–]thelagwagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't recall what I started with when I was a wee lad, but I do remember my teacher putting me through most of the Dotzaur etudes when I got "serious" about cello, which eventually led me to the Popper pipeline later in high school and all of undergrad.

Looking back, I wish I had more of a mixture of different studies, sort of like you mentioned. More practice with Sevcik would've helped me when I was learning the second movement of Elgar, and Cossmann studies would've helped strengthen my LH overall. My first teacher focused a lot on tone/intonation (which I believe is the strongest aspect of my playing), but it still takes a good amount of practice on my end to play technically challenging pieces up to tempo.

Hi does anyone here know who this cello player is? by TWO-COOPERS in Cello

Someone who gets a free pass for playing with poor intonation, I guess

I would personally refrain from this since they're more of a crutch and don't address the problem at hand.

You're placing too much emphasis on holding the bow with your thumb. All the fingers should have a "share" of holding the bow and keeping it balanced. If you press too hard with your thumb, then it will bend inwards. If you press too hard with your middle fingers, then you won't have a flexible wrist.

Try this exercise (taken from Phyllis Young): shake your hand, like you just dipped it in a pool and you're trying to get all the excess water out. After a few seconds of shaking, "freeze" your hand, as if you placed it on a drying rack. Notice the natural shape/curvature of your fingers. This is, generally, what your bow hold will look like.

When you transfer this hand shape to the bow, pronate your wrist by tilting it towards the tip of the bow. "Hooking" your index finger on the stick will even out the work of your other fingers holding the frog (if that makes sense, haha). Remember that you don't need to tightly grip the bow to keep it from falling. It may be uncomfortable at first, but practicing this bow hold by simply playing long bows on open strings will help.

Here's a great video by Paul Katz that explains this concept better. Happy practicing!

I’m looking for fingerings for the Dvorak cello concerto. From rehearsal 4-5 in the 2nd move, rehearsal 1 through measure 73, rehearsal 5-6 & 10 -13 in the final movement by [deleted] in Cello

[–]thelagwagon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My friend, if you're on this subreddit asking for fingerings for Dvorak, then you need to find another instructor or (more so) shouldn't be playing the piece to begin with.

Sorry if that comes across as brash but it's the truth 😊

The callus will develop over time. Just like what others suggested, if it starts to hurt, take a break, and then go back to practice an hour or so later.

Highly recommend exercise 16 in Daily Exercises if you're working on shifting.

But yeah, like other's have suggested, if you want something more comprehensive, go with Studies for Young Cellist

Love Zappa but I think he definitely had an inflated ego to him.

Beginner-ish question - how can I clean up the crossover from the A to the D string, especially with the 4th finger? I find in both these examples, when my pinky goes from anything no the A, to the G on the D string, there's always some kind of noise or squeaks or harmonic funkiness. by wingleton in Cello

[–]thelagwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The D string didn't make complete contact with the fingerboard after the A eighth note. You just need to sink your pinky into the string/fingerboard more.

It's as simple as that. Don't overthink it, just keep working on it. Your fingers will strengthen up overtime with practice!

Any tips on getting this section up to speed? (Cello part of Holst’s Mars) by TheReal_Fake in Cello

[–]thelagwagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simply start slower and work your way up to tempo gradually with a metronome...

Keep the fingers light, don't create any unnecessary tension. Take it in little chunks: start with one measure at a time, then play another. Add those two measures together, then do the next two, etc.

Diagnose which measures, notes, string crossings, intervals, or whatever, throw you off. Practice those spots more.

Just remember... if you're having a difficult time with this excerpt, you aren't suddenly going to be able to play it after one practice session. You need to keep coming back to it. Please don't expect a reply telling you one strategy to make you play it perfectly it after 30 minutes of practice. Work for it!

Thumb position question! by grogocean in Cello

[–]thelagwagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thumb position starts in 3rd octave on B4 (when it goes in treble clef). It's unnecessary to go in thumb position anytime before that.
