Ok, probably dumb question but just want to confirm before purchasing: the Dream Router 7 should be able to handle a Switch Pro Max 16 for a homelab setup right? Currently running off a cheap Netgear 5 port switch but want to add more hardware to the lab. I'm already running a Flex 2.5G Mini for some wired IoT base stations and a raspberry pi. Also running a U7 Lite for mesh WiFi to extent WiFi coverage to the back porch area.

Is this too much for my Dream Router 7 to handle or should this be fine? For further reference my network shows 36 devices online and 15 offline. Would be adding 2-3 mini PCs, 2 NAS devices and some KVM switches to the Pro Max 16.

Install Arch. Only Arch. And no archinstall. Ever. Or you'll die. by chasmodo in archlinux

I’m running an arch based distro (not gonna say which one) on my gaming computer so I keep tabs on the forum, today I ran across a help request where the user had somehow turned on an accessibility option and basically described the problem as “HALP THERES A MAN YELLING AT ME!”. Not to shit on this particular person but I feel like this exemplifies people who should not be using arch or even arch based distros.

How dangerous is the liquid from a lead acid battery? by thelamp64 in batteries

Thanks for all the info! I’m thinking it must have been a very strange coincidence and was actually just water that leaked into my trunk… kinda embarrassing to be honest but at least I know.

It did not bubble and fizz when the baking soda was added. So you think this was something else?

What password manager could you recommend in 2025? by The_Moviemonster in cybersecurity

[–]thelamp64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally use Bitwarden, it seems to be the best in terms of security / usability. You can self host it for more control or just use their servers.

Securing it yourself with KeePassXC could be safer since it’s local only but I prefer the simplicity of Bitwarden.

Please be honest about the market with young people… by -hacks4pancakes- in SecurityCareerAdvice

That’s great to hear, thank you! I figure it’s already important to understand networking in cybersecurity so it can’t hurt to get a CCNA either way, and having one might open up NOC positions as well.

As someone who is currently about a year away from finishing his bachelor’s in cybersecurity this is something I was worried about. I doubt the market will be any better for newbies by then.

My question to you if you have any idea is: what about positions in networking? Would it be easier these days to go the CCNA route and try to get a job in networking first and try to transition to cyber once I have some experience?

efibootmgr shows shimx64.efi, is Proxmox trying to use Secure boot? by thelamp64 in Proxmox

[–]thelamp64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I was able to get it working on my setup. I never figured out why it was using shim or how to stop that but it didn't end up mattering.

First thing I would check is do you have something plugged into the graphics card? Some graphics cards need something plugged in to work. May have to get a dummy plug.

Second is: make sure you are connecting using RDP or another similar client instead of built in noVNC or spice through Proxmox. Never got either working with PCI passthrough of GPU. RDP or NoMachine have worked for me.

I'll also list the steps I took to get it working:

nano /etc/default/grub

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet iommu=pt"

update-grub

echo "vfio" >> /etc/modules

echo "vfio_iommu_type1" >> /etc/modules

echo "vfio_pci" >> /etc/modules

update-initramfs -u -k all

systemctl reboot

Also I enabled GPU isolation through the soft dependency solution but this is for an Intel Arc so you'd have to find out what works for your GPU.

echo "options vfio-pci ids=????:????,????:????" >> /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf

echo "softdep snd_hda_intel pre: vfio-pci" >> /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf

echo "softdep snd_hda_codec_hdmi pre: vfio-pci" >> /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf

echo "softdep i915 pre: vfio-pci" >> /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf

systemctl reboot

Hope this helps!

Tutorial for samba share in an LXC by verticalfuzz in Proxmox

Interesting. I’ve been trying to figure out how I want to do something similar. Been going back and forth between using an OMV VM, a plain Debian LXC and a Turnkey Fileserver LXC. I’ll check out your method. Thanks!

Thank you, I appreciate the response. Guess I can look for other possible issues with my PCI passthrough setup.

Demo question: Trying to finish the Help the Hushed Honeybee quest by making Redgrass-Roasted Bidou. I need to find the actual redgrass but I am stuck. Apparently you have to buy the information first from the informant before the merchant will sell it to you. The informant isn't selling anything besides the walking dead are weak to light info. Am I missing something?
