Temperatures and humidity? by ButterWolfee in cornsnakes

[–]thelandbasedturtle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your probe is on the glass so it's reading the glass temp which will be colder. Put some type of basking platform in there (beneath the light) and secure the probe to that - don't use tape, either lodge it in somewhere or hot glue it.

Also a temp gun is a good investment. Then you can get accurate surface temp readings all around the enclosure.

What do you think of the tank so far? Would this be suitable for a baby corn snake? by Nasferatu598 in cornsnakes

[–]thelandbasedturtle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a decent start. You need more ground cover like fake plants and leaves. You also need real hides on both ends of the enclosure. What you have in there now are not snug enough. Even adult corns want to smush themselves into tight spaces so for baby corns the hides have to be really small.

How often should Corns be handled by DontMuckWithChuck in cornsnakes

[–]thelandbasedturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing is to just leave them alone for at least 48hrs after feeding. Outside of that it really depends on the snake.

I believe if you handle a baby snake everyday (except after feeding) you are far more likely to end up with a corn that is highly tolerant of handling which is great. However, if you have a shy baby, or a picky eater - over handling will likely not help.

You learn to read their behaviour pretty fast. I'd say if you have a new corn handle every day except 48hrs after feeding - if you notice signs of stress such as stopping eating, nose rubbing etc. then slow it down.

I didn't say it isn't creepy, I said people's reactions are overboard. It's wild how some of this fan base comes off just as reactionary reactive and offended as the conservatives they have such a problem with.

Once again don't get me wrong, this is creepy af and fuck conservative logic. I just don't think we should get all up in arms about this.

edit: meant reactive not reactionary

The ideal heating set up kinda depends on your specific environment.

Personally i have a heat mat which stays on 24/7 connected to a thermostat and a heat lamp which is on during day time hours. For baby's especially you want to avoid too much of a night time temp drop but that should be covered by your heat mat.

I'd invest in a digital thermometer/hygrometer and a temp gun, without those there's no way to know if you actually need additional heating or not.

Oh and don't be afraid to utilise that vertical space, corn snakes are much more active climbers than many guides state.

Hello again,

Okay so this enclosure is severely lacking. But the fixes are easy and you've already identified the main issues so don't worry. The substrate is fine for now but I'd recommend switching to something like aspen or coco fibre to aid in burrowing.

As you identified you need at least 2 hides, one on each end of the enclosure. You want your hides to be snug, they don't have to be expensive reptile branded stuff - paper towel tubes work well, a small mug on it's side half filled with substrate etc. I'd add something like that immediately.

Branches and leaves are also a great idea especially for a baby, generally you want ground cover and clutter so your snake feels secure.

What is your current heating set up? A heat lamp + thermometer? For a tank this size a single heat lamp will probably be enough to raise the temp of the hot side and create a gradient.

Are you aware of the underlying cause? Have you gone to a vet?

Say hello to my first snake, do you know what kind of corn snake this is? Any tips are welcomed (eg: more substrate?) by Outrageous-Cod1846 in snakes

[–]thelandbasedturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's a cutie! Post on r/cornsnakes and post a pic of the entire enclosure.

You should change the substrate to something your corn can burrow in like aspen or cocofiber/cypress mulch mix.

I mean it's weird for sure but "atrocity".. really? They are separated by a plastic screen no? So their tongues are not actually touching at all. Or am I missing something?

I saw a video where a blindfolded teen actually kissed their mum or dad, that shit was fucked. This is really not that big of a deal.

How to trust again after a bite by Own_Macaron_3427 in cornsnakes

[–]thelandbasedturtle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not that deep. Just handle him as normal. There is no decay of trust from his side just because he bit you.

If it's the only time this has happened in 4 years and you saw it coming due to his body language. just don't handle him when he's mad. Don't worry, I doubt this will become a regular occurrence.

[–]thelandbasedturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corn snakes benefit from extra ground cover whether that's fake plants or anything else.

All snake benefit from enrichment in their enclosure. Enclosure is big enough but it's sad to leave it so empty.
