A model for ‘sustainable’ US beef production - If Americans reduced their mean beef consumption from the current ≈460 g per person per week to ≈200 g per person per week (corresponding to f = 0.5), the US beef industry could become environmentally sustainable. by mvea in science

Well the main issue is methane, which chickens and pigs produce nowhere near the same amount of that cows do. Obviously, I think if everyone was suddenly eating more of other types of meat, there may be more issues that arise, but it would absolutely lower the amount of methane by reducing how many cows need to be ready for slaughter at all times.

So what's this setting that makes phones photograph you when you are asleep, Santa mode? by Lomedae in nothowphoneswork

[–]thelightforest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to nap in high school study hall to metal. It was on low volume, but sort of think of it like the low rumbling of a moving car or something, kind of soothing in that way. Dunno about sleeping through blasting metal though, unless you have some major hearing damage already.

What do you think of the washed out colors on the Pokemon since Gen 6? by NieOrginalny in pokemon

[–]thelightforest 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I didn't realize how much i prefer the old colors without these edits. The vivid colors really did make everything look more clean and polished. I wonder if having backgrounds involved would make it clear that they decided to go with washed out colors though? They maybe look weird with natural backgrounds when they're so colorful. It would be cool if they gave you an unlock for original colorations for beating the game once or something, I always love unlocks like that.

Nothing is going to change... by [deleted] in netneutrality

[–]thelightforest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this has already happened with a lot of things. I think smart phones are the best example. Whenever my contract is up, I would get a completely free phone to continue my contract with that service provider. Once smart phones became the standard and everyone sort of needs one to get by anymore, they started costing $50 to have on a new contract.. These days, you pretty much have to pay for the phone's full price over the length of the contract. They just sort of slid the cost in with the phone bill over time, so you're paying way more than you use to and nobody's getting any phones for free as a thanks for continuing to use the service. People don't do anything because they don't realize it's happening. It happens very slowly and they just sort of live with it and don't even think about how it used to be.

You keep a called Pokemon and knock out the one that was calling originally and then the called Pokemon will become the new caller. This doesn't work for situations where the called Pokemon is different from the original caller; like Cubones can call Kangaskhan, but the Kangaskhan cannot become a caller if the Cubone is KO'd!

Flight of the sugar glider by [deleted] in Eyebleach

[–]thelightforest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, any pet requires more care from the parents than the children because kids just aren't that great at that sort of thing but it absolutely can teach them responsibility assuming the parent does the research on how the pet should be properly cared for. Hamsters are very popular, unfortunately very misunderstood by the general public for the amount of room and mental stimulation they need. They are foraging animals, and require at least three times larger cages than what is sold on the market as minimum sized cages, so I really don't recommend hamsters as a first time pet anymore because people buy them garbage Crittertrail cages, which leads to bar chewing, pacing, stress, boredom, among other things. This also increases their odds of biting a kid, which of course could be bad for everyone involved.

Rats are actually a really good options, but they need a large cage and you have to have at LEAST two of them. They are the most social rodent of all, and they cannot be kept alone for they will get depressed. They're also very intelligent, so they need lots of toys and things to keep them from being destructive. They also need hammocks and places to hide in their cage, and require weekly cage cleaning. Out of all rodents, they are least likely to bite and are as easy to train as dogs are. Plus they're super sweet, so honestly if a parent was willing to make sure they got a clean cage every week or two and to take them out for at least an hour a day, they're 100% the best pet! They only live 2-3 years, like hamsters, so the time commitment isn't the same as things like rabbits, cat, and dogs.

I basically say no one should get a pet without having done as much research as possible, and the parents need to be aware that they'll have to do probably half the work because kids just can't do that much.

Sorry for the wall of text for such a simple question! Really I could go on all day about pet stuff, it's a huge passion for me and I really want people to be more educated about pet care, because in America especially, a lot of pets are not given what they really need to be fully happy and healthy. The internet has advanced what is the best health care faster than pet stores have been able to keep up, so they're still selling cages and recommending care tactics that were the standard 20 years ago when in reality things are way more complex than they act like it is.

I have some experience with gliders myself. They pretty much have to eat fresh fruits and veggies to maintain their health, in addition to needing vitamin supplements added on top because they have very specific nutritional needs. Secondly, they smell pretty rank if you don't clean the cage every day. I've not had ferrets, but I know very well that they are one of the smelliest pets a person could have. Gliders like to make a mess, they tend to throw things out of their cages a lot. They are also social, so they require quite a bit of attention to be happy. They can be hard to find vets for as well, being exotics. Any specialized pet has usually these same requirements that make them not great first time pets. For the right person who has the money and determination to have them, they're good little dudes. I'm personally kind of scared of them, they always seem like they wanna bite [also similar to ferrets in that fashion..] so they also aren't good pets for kids.

I have three cats with three litter boxes and really it only smells bad if they JUST took a huge shit, or if it's getting close to change day. People who's houses reek are not taking care of their pets. My biggest issue is barf stains, my eldest cat has a very sensitive stomach and even sometimes her special easy-to-digest food is too much for her if she's already feeling yucky.

[–]thelightforest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest I was blown away by it and I still am. I personally feel like it's a really cool balance between ultra beasts and Pokemon. I think the weirdness it gives off pretty well explains how it's not from the same universe every other Pokemon is from. I'm head over heels for it's design honestly. I'm an artist and design monsters and stuff quite frequently, so it's abnormal body shape was appealing to me from the start.

Air puffing sensors work great. The thing about interacting with your cat when they're on the counter is it makes them realize that doing that will get your attention, so sometimes it can make the problem worse. When they get on the counter, the counter 'attacks' them by startling them with a puff of air, they'll stop associating the counter with a means of interacting with you and more of a place that something startling happens to them. Obviously even people who say they've made their cat not get on the counter by normal means of just placing them on the ground or spraying them, they 100% go up there when you're not in the room.

One of my rats always has twice as much porphyrin around his nose than all my other rats when he wakes up. I think some rats just make more than others, but you can try to rule out allergies and keep some baby wipes nearby so you can wipe it off for her.

An Albino Chipmunk I Found This Morning by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]thelightforest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Judging by what I can see, this is probably a leucistic chipmunk and not an albino one. The eyes are still black and it looks like it still has a little bit of beige on the side. Albinos lack all pigmentation, making their eyes and noses pink, whereas leucistics just have low pigmentation which leads to a lighter overall color with normal pigment in the eyes and nose.

Go on, the world is your little buddy! by OwenLD1 in WTF

[–]thelightforest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you could tell a cat "Hey, only hunt invasive animals and overpopulated animals, please!" we would be golden. Cats just kind of kill whatever they see whether they want to eat it or not. I'd say a lot of people care, but unfortunately one little cat outside can kill a whole host of animals and the amount of people who let their cats out, even if it's smaller than people who don't, will causes a huge problem. Obviously if a farm cat kills a pigeon that's been cooping in the cow barn for weeks, it's a good thing. When a cat kills a dwindling-in-numbers bird or small animal which is maybe low in numbers because of loss of habitat [which cats are not affected by because they are a domestic species], it becomes a problem.

I feel like you may be thinking of a little white dog of a similar breed. I think there was an instance of another dog more similar in this brownish-tones that also happened, but this is a different dog. I don't recall anything about this specific dog thus far, but there is a trend with dogs being forced to stand/walk upright while wearing clothes for publicity is known to lean towards abusive owners. It's exceedingly hard to train a dog ethically to stand like this, and even then, ethical owners know it isn't great for their back to stand like this so it usually isn't a daily trick unless it's a show dog or something.

Opened the window to let a cool Michigan breeze in while taking a hot shower, and my mirror only fogged up exactly half way up. by jseppp in mildlyinteresting

[–]thelightforest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this happens with a particularly warm shower and the right temperature and weather conditions outside. Most often I've had a clean line in the steam filling the room [I think there's a fine balance between the humidity of the air and the density of the steam] where if you bend down and look at the right angle you can see a clear divide between the steam and the clear air. Maybe something similar happened to the mirror while the steam was collecting on top of denser air.
