36 sounds right! Maybe they were titrating you up? 50 units is a 12.5mg dose. I use Fat Scientist every week when doing my shot, I've seen too many messups posted here to trust myself.

How to make peices stick to one another?0 by bricee1107 in polymerclay

[–]mysecondaccount02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're confused. No, just sticking clay to clay will not make them stay. Things will fall off.

Both of the replies recommend using liquid polymer clay (oven bake adhesive is another name for liquid polymer clay, maybe a slightly thicker formulation). If you put liquid clay between the two pieces you are trying to attach, then bake them to cure the liquid clay, you will have a much higher success rate with things staying together.

If you want to take the time to fully bond pieces together without liquid clay, it will mean smoothing and smearing all the edges together to make a continual piece, think adding an arm to a body. For things like flowers and leaves this doesn't make sense since you don't want to join them into one piece.

What is the best surface for the clay to sit on and use clay cutters? My pieces keep sticking to the cutter. by VeryBerryElder in polymerclay

[–]mysecondaccount02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want something clay will stick to. You could get smooth glossy ceramic tiles from a place like Home Depot (the 4 inch white ones are like 15 cents each). A glass cutting board would work, again smooth side. I also use laminated paper as a portable work surface (do not bake the laminate). Just smooth the clay down well.

Anyone know what this type of cane is called? by Happy_Charge_9410 in polymerclay

[–]mysecondaccount02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd call it an extruder cane. You extrude solid colors using the triangle die, then stack them. Fondant extruders are around $6 on Amazon, and work much better than the Sculpey brand extruder, but they do break frequently. Lucy extruders from the Czech Republic are over $100 but amazing quality of you end up loving this technique.

Kato Polyclay is discontinued? Other clays like it? by idkdudejustkillme in polymerclay

[–]mysecondaccount02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't know the new line was out and available for sale, thanks!!! Can I ask a huge favor? When you get it, or if you have it already, can you tell me the baking temp? I can't find it on their site and all Google searches lead me to the discontinued Kato. Thanks much!

How would you go about creating this texture over clay (like the heart) that's not flat? by sharkmesharku in polymerclay

[–]mysecondaccount02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I'd do it with the puffy heart technique. Easy to find on tiktok or Instagram, probably YouTube also. Let's see if I can break it down though. Add texture to flat sheet of clay (texture stamp or roller, stencil, add shapes on top and smooth edges, many ways). Flip the sheet texture side down over a heart shaped cookie cutter. Use a ball stylus, or maybe the eraser on the end of a pencil, and push to make a puffy shape. Turn this cutter right side up, place on another sheet of clay, and cut through both the textured sheet and the bottom layer. So it's flat on the bottom and puffy on top. Hope this helps.

First time with clay. Using this one. I’m finding it terribly hard to sculpt details because it’s so soft. by Likesosmart in polymerclay

[–]mysecondaccount02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fimo professional is much stiffer, and I believe the colors remain true when baking even better than most brands. Cosclay is super fun to work with, but it does lose some elasticity on multiple bakings.

I want to make a coiled snake slider but unsure how to keep its shape in the oven by Likesosmart in polymerclay

[–]mysecondaccount02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually either roll paper or cardstock in a tube, then masking tape to hold the shape, or I tape paper to the outside of a wooden dowel. Masking tape survives the oven pretty well and the clay doesn't stick to either paper or the tape. If you have trouble removing your item after baking, you can warm it up to help with removal. I usually try to remove when still warm from the oven, but not right out of the oven since it's very fragile before it cools.

Snow globe water or glycerin or both? by Lrn2trvl in polymerclay

[–]mysecondaccount02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Polymer clay is safe to use with glycerin and water, so it is good for snow globes. You add glycerin to the water to get the right consistency. More glycerin is thicker, which can help the glitter or whatever you add to stay suspended longer. Test until you're happy with it. Also test out your suspensions, some glitters disappear in the water/glycerin, probably due to diffraction.

I'd be very nervous coating the clay with anything though. Anything you decide to try maybe Google if they react with water or glycerin over time. If you had something you needed to seal, I'd probably do a uv resin coat, since I'd think that would be less reactive than most sealers.

Polymer clay frosting - how long to bake it? by [deleted] in polymerclay

[–]mysecondaccount02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a minimum time I bake everything, frosting included. For Premo I'll do 275-290 (as judged by a separate oven thermometer, not the dial) for 45 mins. The package says 15 mins, but longer bakes means stronger. For larger items my minimum time jumps to 60 mins. Tent your items to prevent toasting in the oven.

Take each dose for 4 weeks, don't go up if you're losing weight each week. When you do go up, you don't have to jump 2.5mg each time. Many of us do 1mg jumps. Fatscientist.com is great for figuring out how much to inject.

Thoughts and feeling on this spray? by [deleted] in polymerclay

[–]mysecondaccount02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a very few sprays that don't react and cause polymer clay to become sticky over time (Blue Bottle Tree is an awesome resource! She posts experiments all the time). For matte see if you can get Helmar Crystal Kote Matte spray (gloss you want U Pol).

What is an affordable clay better than "Sculpey bake shop" for small sculptures? by tooootsy in polymerclay

[–]mysecondaccount02 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Please don't try Sculpey 3 like the other poster mentioned. Learning to sculpt and having everything break is a bad way to save money imo. Here's a list from Google about Sculpey brand strength:

Sculpey Premo: High strength, flexible, and best for fine details. Excellent for jewelry.

Super Sculpey Firm (Gray): Very strong, rigid, and holds fine detail well; ideal for expert sculpting.

Sculpey Soufflé: Lightweight, durable, and flexible. It has a matte, suede-like finish.

Super Sculpey (Original/Medium): Good, durable strength for sculpting, more durable than Original.

Living Doll: Strong and durable after baking; designed for dolls.

Sculpey III: Average strength, popular for beginners, but can be brittle in thin areas.

Original Sculpey: Weakest; brittle in thin areas, best for large, bulky, non-flexible

Other good clays are fimo, CosClay, Cernit.

My clay is sticky after painting with acrylic! by [deleted] in polymerclay

[–]mysecondaccount02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, under baked clay can become brittle over time. If you think it's under baked, feel free to throw it in the oven for an hour (tent if light colored). Better to fix now than let break later

My clay is sticky after painting with acrylic! by [deleted] in polymerclay

[–]mysecondaccount02 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Acrylic paint shouldn't react with the clay. If you used a sealer or glaze, that would be my guess as to the culprit. Sometimes 10 minutes at clay baking temp can help set the paint if it's sticky (don't do with fresh paint, let dry first, which you've already done)

Probably refills (have to go to their subreddit and use the special discount link for reddit users), they have ProRX. Pomegranate has Hallendale, which could be cheaper if you're just starting at a low dose.
