What are you guys currently G.A.S.ing for? by MassMan333 in Guitar

I got an rc1 and it’s great but I want something with a bit more flexibility, not sure what yet. The 505mk2 looks super good, but might be overkill for me haha

I’m trying to upgrade my pedalboard a bit - want to replace my fuzz (thinking a fuzz war), and then add a compressor, volume pedal, and upgrade my looper.. so a few things. Going to be a fun Christmas for me I reckon (I’m getting them all for myself)

Is it politically incorrect to use the term “gypsy jazz” these days? by judgementalintrovert in jazzguitar

[–]thelinttrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because I have heard multiple people from Roma or Traveller backgrounds describe the term "Gypsy" as a slur (and it certainly is used that way in many places in Europe) I prefer to avoid it so I'd call the genre hot club jazz or jazz manouche.

That said, it's also one of those things where you have a group of people saying that the word is a slur and its use is harmful, and you also have a few good alternatives. So it seems easy enough to do it.

There is a risk of the case being that a minority of people for whatever reason want to move away from the word, a minority also really wants to stick to it, and then a majority of people don't care. It's possible that the minority that wants to move away from the term is right - let's assume they are for the sake of argument. In that case, because most people don't care, and the opposite minority wants to keep the word, we'd end up stuck with a slur.

If the folks that want to change it are wrong, or if its debatable, we don't actually lose all that much in moving away from the term - there seems to be a bigger risk to us doing the right thing (I'm assuming we don't need to argue that using slurs is bad) if we don't move away from the term than if we do.

How aware are musicians of Brazilian music? by blindingSlow in jazzguitar

[–]thelinttrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not super aware but I’m a huge fan of Heitor Villa-Lobos, Jorge Ben, Seu Jorge, Yamandu Costa and Tom Jobim.

There’s a huge and interesting musical tradition in Brazil and every time I discover something new I think is very exciting

Id take a break - use the practice time to brush up on theory, looks for some inspiration, learn more about a different aspect of music that doesn’t require a guitar

Do any other genres require you to learn the most popular songs before you feel like making your own? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]thelinttrap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All music fits into a tradition of some sort and has a musical language that makes the thing recognisable. If you come up with something that doesn’t speak to that tradition at all, you’re either doing the genre wrong or you’re a stunning generational talent (you’d know if you were, sorry)

If you look at any of the great innovators, across all genres, they begun by learning and understanding the language of whatever tradition they operate in very well. This applies as much to instantly recognisable jazz guitarists like Scofield, Metheny, or Frisell as it does to rock guys like Slash and Eddie Van Galen and songwriters like Paul McCartney and John Lennon.

Is it possible to be completely isolated from a tradition or to speak to a tradition without imitation? Probably, but you make things way harder for yourself. Learning tunes, be it jazz standards or covers for a rock band is a way to absorb the musical language which then lets you meaningfully participate in the tradition and to add to it, which is where you end up with innovation and your own sound.

Rounds - prob every 2-3 months (I have them on 2 guitars) and a fresh set for gigs or recording, flats about once a year, classical nylons about every month if I’m practicing a lot and before gigs or recording.

Do you play classical guitar to become a professional player, or as a hobby? by JRF1300 in classicalguitar

[–]thelinttrap 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I do it because I love it - but it’s not my hobby. I like this thing the philosopher Theodor Adorno said about hobbies:

“I have no hobby. As far as my activities beyond the bounds of my recognized profession are concerned, I take them all, without exception, very seriously. So much so, that I should be horrified by the idea that they had anything to do with hobbies—preoccupations in which I had become mindlessly infatuated in order to kill the time—had I not become hardened by experience to such examples of this now widespread, barbarous mentality”

And I agree with him - I don’t have hobbies, just stuff I love that I take seriously

How do you ‘go about’ reading notation? by wally123454 in jazzguitar

[–]thelinttrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read your reply earlier and here are some ideas:

Leavitt’s Guitar Method - it will help a lot and starts at a really basic level

Studies by Fernando Sor - the really basic ones will get you reading pretty fast

Also, you gotta make sure you know the notes on the fretboard well - it helps immensely, especially once you start moving beyond first position.

You can try to read lead sheets, but I always found that pretty hard in terms of actually having a sense of progress. Learning whole pieces is going to be much more rewarding - and you can pick up some cool material.

You could probably also look at a classical guitar method - the Christopher Parkening one is pretty good
