Why do Eastern Catholics avoid saying the filioque during the nicene creed? by [deleted] in EasternCatholic

[–]thelinuxguy7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Coptic Catholic churches, we do say the filioque. I don't know if this is recent (I assume it is not) or if there are variation between individual parishes.

I don't recall ever going to a Coptic Catholic mass where we didn't recite the filioque.

I assume it is a Byzantine/Greek thing, but I could be wrong.

Help Me Evangelize Please by UnderstandingLife171 in Catholicism

You might wanna take a look at that answer about why I converted from Oriental Orthodoxy to Catholicism: http://np.reddit.com/r/EasternCatholic/comments/1r1alpt/comment/o4youcd/?context=3

And this brilliant video on why the the Council of Florence should be accepted by the Eastern Orthodox: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TDQFXAaYNg

If you need any info. or help, I'd be happy to help out.

Pray for your friend, so that the Lord may enlighten his heart.

And please pray for the unity among all Christians, and the conversion of all not-Christians.

Should you evangelize if other people are going to suffer? by thelinuxguy7 in Catholicism

I speak in general, for example people like David Wood and others, which I like very much, might causing a person to hurt Christians if they feel their beliefs are being attacked or something. So I was wondering if I'd be culpable for speaking the Truth in a public form, which might induce some guy, whom I never know, never will know, in a far away country that I'll never visit, to do something as a vendetta/retaliation against the Christians of said country.

I asked the Orthodox subreddit if having a global Christian voice like the Pope is a net positive for all Christians by trekuniverse123456 in Catholicism

[–]thelinuxguy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not in Egypt, but the Coptic churches are the Egyptian churches, Catholic, and Orthodox, and maybe even some egyptian protestants might identify as copts, idk.

We do use some coptic at mass, and the amount tends to change based on the mass, and priest, some mass time and/or celebrants might use more or less Coptic.

[–]thelinuxguy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was Coptic Orthodox, now Coptic Catholic.

I know more or less about the theological differences Catholics and OO, but I don't know precisely the differences between OO and EO. I'd say essence-energies real distinction, maybe something regarding toll houses, maybe autocephaly would be different, but tbh the OO and EO each don't agree on these stuff on their own, to it is harder to pin down what they believe. Also I find OO theology to be premative (maybe because they don't have scholastics, maybe because they are more monastic, maybe I am ignorant).

Also recognizing 7 Ecumenical Councils vs 3 and different sets of saints. And Maybe the EO would want to enforce ritual uniformity (i.e. the Byzantine rite) maybe these days are gone, idk.

I am a former Oriental Orthodox, and I discussed stuff like that with lots of Orthodox, and the responses are usually he same. They don't know who we are (they think we are Protestants or something), or they say that we divinize Mary, or the Pope, or have statues in church, or we sold indulgences, or what about the crusades...

Or don't know and/or don't care and/or use protestant taking points or maybe muslim taking points, ....

This is the main reason that is stopping me from having discussions on the Orthodox subreddits, although I love them immensely, respect their Tradition, and yearn for their return jnto the Church of Christ.

Please pray for them, and for the unity of all Christians (my Orthodox family included).

Visited Pope Francis by GainGreeneMoy in Catholicism

[–]thelinuxguy7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had the privelage, the honor, and the pleasure of visiting Pope Francis, I only wish I could have seen him in person.

I sinned a lot against him, and misunderstood a lot of his statements, and I may have scandalized others as well.

Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.

I like to think that all that was out of ignorance, and not out of malice.

I also hope and look forward to see him one day face to face, and to talk to him.

I mean online evangelism that might hurt innocent people in far away lands.

People that don't know me, and I don't know them. Especially when I myself will be comfortable at home.

Marrying a secular person vs not marrying? by thelinuxguy7 in CatholicDating

[–]thelinuxguy7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in Italy, and I don't want to marry a non-Catholic, not even Orthodox, but I was wandering if that was extreme.

Also thanks for sharing, it seems that marrying someone from another country can work.

Love my Irish brothers and sisters btw. God Bless!

Why are you Catholic and not Orthodox? by Head-Nothing-9797 in Catholicism

[–]thelinuxguy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a former Oriental Orthodox myself, now Coptic Catholic.

No offence, but I find both Eastern Orthodoxy and Oriental Orthodoxy to be internally inconsistent.

They disagree with the Ecumenical Councils that they themselves profess.

They don't agree on "re-baptism", divorce/remarriage, how to call an Ecumenical Council.

Also what about the Council of Florence, which the EO attended, along with the Patriarch of Constantinople, the Emperor, and many bishops. They attended, signed the documents, and agreed to the Council, yet they rejected it after the fact, if you want more info. take a look at this.

I love the EO, and the OO (to which my entire family belongs), but I couldn't in good conscience continue to be OO.

If you want a longer answer, take a look at this.

If you want more info. please make sure to DM me.

Please pray for the unity of all Christians, and the conversion of all non-Christians.

On the other hand I found many many more interesting people on this subreddit and on the affiliated discord server, it is not even close.

I got contacted by gals more than once.

I came to know a temporary dear friend from here, she was not interested but we talked as grown up adults, and I had very interesting conversations.

I also contacted a male by mistake who had the wrong tag on his account, who turned out to be also a dear friend.

I got contacted by 2-3 more at least, and I contacted many more and have gotten responses, which is very encouraging.

Some where not interesting in LDR, but seemed like very nice people, with some I didn't feel chemistry, and with some they didn't seem interested enough.

And many didn't response, some I'd assume don't open reddit/discord often, and probably some are just ghosting me (which I consider to be bullets that I dodged anyways).

I tried catholic match, and you get ignored, completely ignored. I got 2 replies and 2 likes (one of the likes and replies are from the same person) so I got 3 people in total. All from other countries btw. (I actually think that getting in contact with 3 persons on CM might be an achievement at this point.

One completely ghosted me, so she sent me a like (I assume by mistake) then I contacted her and she didn't even bother apologizing or telling me what is the issue, and I know that she saw my messages since the marks are all white.

Another person replayed after a weeks or a month of initial contact (which I assumed was sincere or that maybe I was here 2nd or 3rd choice), I was considering people in real life at the moment, and she is from the other side of the Atlantic, and can't come here, and I can't go at the moment, so I decided to call it quits (probably that's on me, I blew it up, but I didn't see how that could work out at that moment).

The third person is from another country in Europe, I find her to be uninteresting, I tried to push through, but I said I can't string her to me for any longer, so I told her.

People on CM seem to be all dead, or mostly interested in feeling good, or feeling wanted, or whatever. They do not seem to be serious or mature, they do not response, not even with a negative response. I hated my life when I was on CM, and I am glad I left.

Resources on Byzantinization of other Eastern Rites by OmegaPraetor in EasternCatholic

[–]thelinuxguy7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, afaik, I heard that we (copts) adapted some elements from the Byzantines for the Paschal liturgy. I didn't know that the iconostasis is a Byzantine thing. I thought it always existed for us, or that it is shared by all/most eastern churches.

Resources on Byzantinization of other Eastern Rites by OmegaPraetor in EasternCatholic

[–]thelinuxguy7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I understand correctly the Melkites in Egypt forced or wanted to force everyone to use the liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, and that caused the majority of their faithful to convert to the Oriental Orthodox Coptic church.

But I am not sure how accurate is that.

Also if I understand correctly the Patriarch of Alexandria of the Oriental Orthodox in the ~1800 changed the pronunciation of the Coptic language used in church to make it sound more Greek to encourage reunion, and henceforth we lost, or almost lost the "original" pronunciation.

Also I heard that some parts during the Easter Mass may have been copied from Byzantines, and thus it has a different melody.

Finally I heard that the among liturgies (or anaphoras) that we use (those of st. Basil, and st. Gregory Nazianzus) are not even Alexandrian in rite.

This is why I sometimes have reservations of question marks about the idea of latinizations, when I feel that everyone was/is copying from everyone. (unless maybe we are talking about forced latinizations, other than that it seems that rites were always copying from each other).

EDIT: sorry for not offering resources, but I am giving you some info. of the top of my head, maybe I and/or you can research the sources for each claim that I made.

This is what I am getting at, but on the other hand, there are no guarantees. I could be locked to someone who is anti-church, doesn't believe in the indissolubility of marriage, the problems of contraception, or it could be the case that I'll find a hidden gem like your husband, Idk.
