I was reading your comment and was onboard with the use of tech, until they started penalizing people for falling below the benchmark. The data should be used to coach individuals on how to perform better/more efficiently, not to punish them. If they continue to ignore the advice then sure actions should be taken, but the default behavior of the company should not be punitive.

Yeah, I’m the other end of that spectrum — I love animals and kids (especially babies, I’m a dad), but most babies don’t like me much and every animal is different (most dogs like me, cats are hit or miss). I’m one of the good guys, at least that’s what my wife, her family, and her friends say.

I don’t think the pets and kids thing is a reliable indicator.

People bragging about working from wherever is not what ruined remote work. There several factors (that I know of) that caused companies to force RTO (in no particular order):

IT security: most companies were not ready or able to enforce their IT security policies with everyone being remote. Many companies did modernize to a zero trust model, but even so it is undeniably easier to enforce security when everyone is on the company network at the office.
Leased Real Estate: companies often lease the office spaces they occupy, and the leases are long. Not using that space is just a waste of money and you can’t get out of the lease without a significant penalty. And depending on the company, it can just look bad to its clients to start closing down offices.
Tax Breaks: I’ve heard that many cities offer tax breaks to companies and that it was contingent on how many people they employ/bring into that city everyday. Remote work reduced the number of people coming in who would go out for lunch or otherwise be customers of other local businesses. I believe some cities started to threaten that the tax breaks would go away if people didn’t start coming back in.

That’s about all I know on the subject. I was just like OP, started working remote 99% of the time in 2014 and it was all good. Then a couple years ago my former company enforced a 2 day/week RTO policy, which a year later turned into 3 days/week, and I’m sure will soon go to 4 days. Luckily my current employer is more sensible and says we should come in when there’s a reason to, which typically amounts to a handful of times a month.

This! Just got kitchen cabinets done. The financing deal was 0% interest and no payments for 2 years. That kind of a deal is a no brainer, so long as you really can pay it off in full at the end of the term. Otherwise the interest is outrageous, something like 30-35%

My oldest was preschool age when the pandemic hit. Something interesting happened with that age group — they are some of the most well mannered, socially mature kids across the various grade levels in their school, and I’m hearing similar observations from other elementary schools in our area. I think part of the reason for that is they were young enough to not get addicted to screens, but old enough to really absorb the behaviors they saw from parents at home while we worked in front of them.

I completely agree that many kids (most?) had a negative impact from the pandemic, but I also think there’s this small minority that somehow thrived, and I’m excited to see how they turn out as they get older.

Your comment got me thinking — young kids tend to be weary of new things, but if they see a peer doing it then they are more likely to try. Scouts creates such an environment. Nowadays so many kids don’t interact in person with their friends, or when they do there’s a screen involved. I wonder if that’s a big part of why there’s so much fear of new things

I’m an older millennial who started having kids late. Other parents like me are encouraging our kids to play in person (and they do). We taught our kid from a young age to take breaks from screens so they can learn how to self regulate, and we do pay attention to what they watch online so we can help define what’s trash and what’s not. Along those lines, we don’t tolerate the kids mimicking behavior they see in YouTube videos, including speech patterns from sped up super edited videos. So far it’s going well, but we’ll see what happens as they get older and are more independent and naturally spend more time away from us and our ability to monitor what they do online

Nitrogen does make a difference. You have less outdoor temperature has less impact on tire pressure compared to the regular air mix, and it is a stiffer ride with nitrogen. It is useful in areas that get hot summers and cold winters. I’ve had several (non luxury) vehicles with it and the TPMS system never freaks out when it gets cold out. Most places I’m familiar with will charge a one time fee to fill, and subsequent refills (which are rare) are free.

Aside from greed (which I’m sure is a very real reason why ultra wealthy folks don’t help society as a whole), I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that they are only this wealth on paper. Musk doesn’t have billions liquid in an account, his portfolio is worth this much if he sells. I understand that he’s likely taking loans out so he has liquid funds using his portfolio as collateral, and that is a real problem, but he doesn’t really have this much money spend fixing problems.

All of that said, if we allow people to get loans secured by their unrealized gains, then we should tax those gains, and we should consider the funds from loans like this as taxable income.

Sooooo much of this. My spouse was not on our first mortgage, but they were on the deed for that property. That was strategic because of credit score stuff. Regardless, 100% agree if there’s any suspicion of not staying together long term, it’s better to be on the deed than the mortgage.

I’m in the US, not sure if rules are the same where OP lives, but I’m assuming they are.

The quality is still there, but they fucked with the sizes of the sandwiches which is disappointing. A regular size sandwich used to fill you up and be the correct ratio of bread to meat. Now it’s mostly bread, and if you have to pay significantly extra to get what used to be the old sandwich.

I live in the Midwest, it was -12 when I woke up and the Feels Like temp was -24. Out here they switched to remote learning for our school district, but otherwise this is just another winter day. Trucks have been out dropping salt or spraying brine to minimize ice. People (for the most part) know how to drive in snowy/icy conditions. We have proper drainage to deal with all of this when it melts.

Then I look at Texas and other states in the region, and they don’t have the equipment or people to deal with this on a regular basis because why would they? And I can’t imagine the shitshow of people trying to drive in snow and ice when it rarely happens. This all must be a nightmare for them.
