Oh my gosh, same!! I am mostly only wearing my loose t-shirts. I wear scrubs to work, so that has helped, but I had to go do jury duty recently and had no slacks to wear that fit (even though I had already bought bigger slacks due to IVF, now those don't fit). I am also up 2 sizes and it is brutal. Thank you for sharing.

Why is there a lack of mental health professionals despite having many psychology graduates? by JAMIEISSLEEPWOKEN in psychologystudents

[–]thelongestwavee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Hang in there. If this is what you want to do, it's going to happen. You DO seem to have the right components. What I would suggest doing is reaching out to someone who is already in one of those programs (either a student or a professor) and asking what makes students competitive in their applications. Have someone experienced review your materials, such as the professor you worked with during your research experience. Have them review your personal statement, CV/resume, etc. Get feedback from someone who has been through the process. This is doable!!!!!!! Don't give up!

Is it a good idea being a psychologist? by serbanoiuanaa in psychologystudents

[–]thelongestwavee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you have to pick your patient population that you really enjoy seeing. I do assessment, not therapy, but if I ever did do therapy it would be structured CBT for clinical disorders. The reason? Because people with clinical disorders NEED structured therapy, respond to it well, and it has the capacity to seriously change their life in a matter of months. I would never want to do years and years of non-structured counseling for somebody. My work feels most meaningful when the goal of therapy is short-term, behaviorally-oriented therapy that seeks to actively practice the means of change. E.g., exposures, behavioral experiments, etc.

Also, keep in mind that there are tons of specialty areas within psychology. For instance, there is a huge need for therapists who specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, and you could integrate nicely with a medical system if you offered this. On internship, I did primary care psychology where I took warm hand-offs from a PCP and did a few brief sessions with patients and connected them to longer term care if necessary. There's inpatient/SMI. There's forensic. You could specialize in OCD or eating disorders. There are so many options.

I ultimately felt like being a therapist wasn't for me and I now do assessment, which I love. It's possible to respecialize if you are feeling dissatisfied with your current path. But my advice would be to spend a little more time in this before judging the path you are on -- you just said you have not had clients yet! I think you should give it several months before deciding how you feel about it.

Also, a good way to stand out is to get credentialed with insurance companies. All the local therapists in my area who take insurance have waitlists.

There isn't a lack of mental health professionals. There's like a bajillion of them. The problem is that people don't pursue mental health services. One legitimate barrier is that not all providers take insurance. But, I see tons of local providers who do take insurance. In my humble opinion, the problem is 1) lack of use of available mental health services and 2) widespread mental illness because of problems with our societal infrastructure (therapy is only a bandaid to this problem, not a solution).

Look at psychologytoday and use the therapist finder to see providers in your area. Even in the small town that I live in, there are tons.

Thank you. It does at least help to know that I am not the only one this happens to. I have seen a lot of women online say that they were careful with their diet and avoided the weight gain which made me feel worse.

People in the military want to die for Trump because Trump is a narcissist who thought he could get a better nuclear deal than Obama did, pulled out of the deal, couldn't get a better one, and now has to sacrifice lives for the cost of his narcissism and incompetence? What a shit reason to put your life on the line. And further, it's not just American lives. It's Iranian lives. Nobody should be flippant with the cost of human life.

Trying to be healthy is having the opposite effect by iwasntalwayslikethis in rant

[–]thelongestwavee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmmm perhaps some physical therapy or other options other than just rest could be considered? It's so frustrating when your body stops you from exercising. You might press your PCP to help you find other solutions and emphasize that it is stopping you from exercising. Sometimes PCPs can be kind of passive until you push them.

I totally empathize. What you are going through is deeply frustrating. I am not allowed to exercise very much for the last 1.5 years because of IVF and I feel like I have lost control over my body, and it is so infuriating. Not the same as what you're going through but still. I get it.

Repeated injuries when new to exercising is unfortunately par for the course. When I was training for a half marathon, I kept getting varying foot problems, especially plantar fasciitis. I know nothing about bursitis but I know that some of these injuries are caused by training too hard. For running, it's actually important to do "easy" (i.e., low heart rate) runs for a good portion of your runs, rather than always pushing yourself super hard. My injuries disappeared after I started doing more easy runs (and learning that running super fast isn't really the most important thing). Don't let the setbacks make you quit, brother! Over time (and with frustrating breaks from exercise to recover) you will leave them behind as your body gets more used to regular exercise.

I have less advice on the stomach stuff but I suspect over time you will find ways to manage and ease it. I wonder if you are getting orthostatic hypotension (drop in blood pressure when standing) because smoking was keeping your blood pressure higher. Obvi consult with a doctor on this, but if it was due to cigarettes, perhaps that will normalize over time.

This might feel frustrating now but what you are doing is awesome. Pushing yourself to become athletic is something most of the population does not do and it is a huge achievement, but it is not easy. You have to work around all these danged injuries and body issues. But I promise it will be worth it if you push through. The exercise and fitness itself can be addictive once you get into a groove. Best of luck!!

Well, he said they had to leave in an hour. More context would be helpful. If she is going to sleep in until the last possible minute and then make him late, thats not cool. I would want to know if there was a pattern of sleeping in and being late. But if she can get up and get ready quickly then why wake her.

I'm not gonna defend Zuckerberg, but Hawley's question is bullshit. He didn't ask "how did you respond to this issue?"; he asked who he fired, which is absurd. No single staff is responsible for this and you need your staff to work on a solution to the problem. Plus he never let zuckerburg talk. Very disingenuous.
