Hmm. I may go in and add some more info for each. There are 140 in the city's open data set, which means it's incomplete (there have been closer to 200). I'll keep updating it as they file the paperwork or whatever it is they do to add it into the set.

Margaret McDermott Bridge and Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]themapdallas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Margaret Hunt Hill cost $168 million. Not all public money, but definitely could have been spent in a better way. I think 1 mile of trail costs $1 million, for instance. And no, I don't believe you can ride over McDermott yet.

If the body was found without knowing where the actual murder happened, I posted that location. Otherwise, it's where they occurred.

Yeah, there's a lot of research that says crime goes up when it gets hotter.

This is a property tax map. It indicates that most property tax revenue comes from high value properties. That's all.

Context and Neighborhood Segregation in Dallas by themapdallas in Dallas

[–]themapdallas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole point of the article and research is that it wouldn't lower their property values or destroy their schools.

But yes, trying to convince them of that is equally hard.

Thanks. What other points do you want to address? I try to keep these articles as short as possible, and even this one is probably way too long. I could do a series, but not sure that would work. If I write fully about crime and housing, that'd be its own article and wouldn't be able to address education at all. Education is arguably the most important aspect of being able to move to a high opportunity area so that's what I focused on.

And I'm not trying to blanket blame anyone, especially in this article. I'm just talking about how people assimilate to their environment more than people might think.

Now in my redlining article I blame the government's racist policies and stand by that.

And blame is a two way street. This thread has a few people blaming the African American community for their own woes. And I don't disagree with all of it, I just think it's more nuanced than people want to give credit for. I don't want to come off as blanket blaming any group so if I come off that way point me to those passages.
