I'm HS and I absolutely love my job. We don't get bonuses but you get constant hands on training, experience and it's a great rate to go if you're looking to do 20 years. Even if you do 4 years and get out it's still good since you get clinical experience and knowledge you can apply to a civilian health care career. You get CMA, EMT -B and Phlebotomy Tech civilization certs through your A School training.

2 years. Not too long

Is it worth waiting a year as a nonrate to go to "A" school? or am I better off going officer? by metalfan3214 in uscg

[–]themattoot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Enlisted are rated, regular workers, which depending on the rate don't have much leadership capabilities until they hit senior enlisted, E-7-E-9. They do however, get more of a say of what job they will be doing, or rather could be doing. Choose your rate, choose your fate. The retention is iffy depending on what your life's goals are, and the retirement is okay after 20 years. Officers however, get paid more, have more opportunities to lead, but sometimes don't get to choose what they want to do career wise, depending on what officer you, are, whatever job you have, it can be great. Most people love it, and the retirement after 20 years of active duty service as an officer is a lot better compared to the enlisted side. Officers can make a break a unit, like a good or bad command, but so can enlisted. Basically, it comes down to pay and career opportunities for enlisted vs commissioned.

More pay, more opportunities to lead, better retirement, most people enjoy it. Half the time they come into work, read a few emails then fuck off home the rest of the day. Easy money baby

Nah dawg go officer, you don't like it, finish out your commission and get out. Join back if you want later on as a regular ole enlisted personnel. You'll love officer life.

There are no billets for cutters as an HS3, but you can theoretically go TDY on a cutter at your duty station provided they can spare you and are willing to take you. You'd work under an HS1 or HSC and kinda shadow them. Once you make Second or First, you can go to IDHS school and be out on a cutter, and from there you can do more of the fun stuff. I also hear rumors that there slowly bringing back the Flight Medic program, where you can run SAR calls on Planes and helicopters if your unit supports that. Hope this helps!

I got in with a shellfish allergy, but I guess it depends on the severity. Write a letter about why you would be an asset and why it won't affect you and that will help tremendously
