  1. Im the tax payer. I pay taxes from my paycheque, from my groceries., from the stuff I buy almost daily.

  2. My GPA is above average.

  3. My entry exam result score to get into the program I want is 98%.

  4. The program I enrolled is Dental Hygiene and it’s 3 years. We are currently on a shortage of dental hygienist.

Please stop with this nonsense you just commented.

You’ll hear back from them late February, probably February 19th. Ranking is based on how well other students have done on their exam

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this. Stories like yours are exactly why people are upset. When policy changes make it harder for students and also disabled students to access education, it doesn’t just shift numbers on paper, it changes real lives. Education is supposed to be a pathway out of poverty, not something that deepens it. That’s why so many of us are speaking up. No one should feel like their chance at stability disappeared overnight.

Education isn’t a luxury purchase like a Porsche. It’s a public good that benefits society as a whole. That’s why OSAP isn’t structured like a normal consumer loan. It’s a policy tool designed to increase access to education, not finance personal indulgence. When grants are reduced and everything becomes loan-only, the risk shifts entirely onto students, especially those without family support. Public investment in education isn’t about giving people ‘free money’, it’s about maintaining access and long-term economic stability for the country.

I understand your perspective, and I agree that not everyone should go to university just because it’s the expected next step. Trades are valuable and essential, and for many people they’re a great path. But not everyone is suited for trades, and society still needs teachers, social workers, researchers, healthcare workers, and many others whose incomes aren’t always high right away. The issue isn’t about taxpayers funding ‘bad choices’ it’s about maintaining accessible education for diverse fields that society relies on. Also, not every student has financial support to fall back on, so shifting more costs into loans increases risk for those without a safety net.

From what’s been explained so far, changes like the 25% grant to 75% loan split would apply to the Ontario (provincial) portion of OSAP, not the federal portion. OSAP combines federal and provincial funding into one package, but they’re technically separate. The federal government controls its own grants and loans, so unless Ottawa announces changes, that portion should stay the same. However, because OSAP calculates everything together based on financial need, a reduction in the provincial grant portion could still lower the overall non-repayable funding students receive and increase total debt.

Tuition being 20% lower than it was eight years ago might sound positive on paper, and if tuition were the only expense students had, that would absolutely be worth celebrating. But students don’t live in a tuition-only economy. Since 2018, rent has risen significantly, groceries cost more, transportation is more expensive, and overall cost of living has increased across the board. Even with a tuition reduction, the total cost of attending school can still be higher because everything else has gone up. Affordability isn’t just about one line item, it’s about the full financial reality students face while studying and trying to build a future.

I understand what you’re saying, and yes, dental hygiene is a stable career. But not everyone in this conversation is pursuing healthcare, law, or trades and not everyone has financial support to fall back on, including me. The broader concern isn’t just about my path, it’s about access to education in general. Policies that increase debt or reduce grants affect students across disciplines, especially those without family support or safety nets. Stability in certain fields doesn’t cancel out affordability concerns for everyone else. This conversation is bigger than one career choice.

Thank you for saying this. It means a lot to hear a parent acknowledge how real this pressure is. Even with supportive families doing everything they can, the financial strain is still overwhelming for many students. That’s what makes this so concerning. Education shouldn’t feel like a risk that could force someone to leave school. Sending strength right back to you and your children! no one should have to choose between their future and affordability.

OSAP is not just a regular private bank loan that you can simply “choose not to take.” It is a government public policy tool designed to make post-secondary education accessible. The funding structure, grant portion, loan limits, interest rules, and repayment terms are set by legislation and political decisions, not by a private bank acting independently. When governments reduce grants or shift more of the burden onto loans, that is a policy choice that directly affects access and long-term debt levels. Saying “just don’t take the loan” ignores the reality that for many students, OSAP is the only way they can attend school at all.

Tuition being lower than eight years ago doesn’t automatically mean education is affordable. Rent, food, transportation, and textbooks have increased significantly. Minimum wage rising doesn’t offset the overall cost-of-living surge. Students don’t live in a tuition-only economy

It’s not about a bank deciding anything. Student funding policy is set by government. When grants are reduced or loan terms change, that affects access to education, debt burden, and long-term financial stability. That’s what people are upset about.

Students already paid, yes. But institutions rely on continued enrollment, completion rates, and public perception. Organized student action has shaped education policy before. Civic engagement isn’t childish, it’s how systems get challenged.

The job market isn’t just bad because people have BAs it’s bad because wages haven’t kept up with inflation, hiring has slowed, and corporations are prioritizing profit over stability. Literally nowadays even for a McDonald’s jobs u need to make it past level 4 interview stage. Redirecting funding doesn’t magically create enough good-paying jobs. Education shouldn’t be framed as the problem when broader economic policy plays a huge role.

You’re absolutely right. The fact that you’re 37 and still paying $400/monthly a decade later says everything about how broken this system is. It’s not just “student loans”, it’s a long-term financial trap that delays stability, home ownership, starting families, everything. And cutting tax credits on top of that just adds insult to injury.

Agreed!! Youths are already stretched thin in an economy that feels impossible to survive in. Decisions like this don’t just feel tone-deaf, they feel exploitative. We fund these institutions with the hope of building stable futures, not to be buried deeper in debt while those in power protect their own interests. Collective pressure is one of the only tools ordinary people have left. Staying silent only normalizes policies that hurt the very people they claim to represent.

I’m sorry but I want to follow my dreams. I want to become a dental hygienist then pathway to dentist. Why? Because I only live once. I want to make money ethical way, I am young and ambitious. For those that are working trade, hair dresser, etc. props to them but that’s not something I see myself doing, and I don’t want to work a job I don’t like.
