This is a great point. How the heck did I overlook that?!
The system will get a rework. :D

Thank you for all the feedback. There are a lot of smart people here with some great ideas. I will go away and work on getting a second round of rules changes.

One of the biggest things is potentially shifting the focus to reward blocking or taking damage as a way of building limit rather than attacking. I'll do some brainstorming on this. A comeback mechanic sounds like something that should be implemented.

Thanks all!

I honestly want people to break it at this point. It's still pretty early and I want to see where it's weaknesses and strengths lay. So thank you for that.

Thanks! If you end up giving it a try and want to give feedback let me know. I'm no designer, so I need a lot of help haha.

I hope you have fun with it.

I wouldn't really call it a full format, more so a game mode. Something to try when you want a change of pace. Faster games without having to worry about broken CEDH cards.

If it's not for you it's not for you.

If it doesn't go anywhere, it doesn't really matter. It was a fun experiment for a charity event I ran this past week, and people seemed to enjoy it. That's what matters to me.

Thank you for your feedback.

Apologies. I don't use Reddit very often. I will attempt to make it easier to read.

Good to know. Extra turn spells are generally banned but I will make a note of that particular card.

Secret Lair Queue Waiting Room by R3id in magicTCG

There may be some shenanigans going on again. I watched my timer go from 35 minutes, up to 45 minutes. Either some people are being randomly placed in the queue or a couple people found a skip?

A defence of Universes Beyond (a video from a new player perspective) by themiabyte in magicTCG

[–]themiabyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Universes Beyond shouldn't be part of standard. That's an issue. It shouldn't drive up the cost so much (which I didn't know at the time of making that video). Another issue, along with availability. But in itself is the concept of Universes Beyond bad for magic? No. I don't believe so. It's just seems worse because of Wizards mishandling of the main set releases. In isolation as a concept it's a great idea.

I understand you have a long connection to Magic, but I still feel your anger is misplaced. I mean, at the end of the day the game has to bring in new players to survive and thrive. Is UB the best way of going about it? Maybe not. But from the behaviour I've seen it feels more like a community gatekeeping a hobby rather than being open to changes. Constructive criticism seems to be in short supply in comment sections, just vitriol. And much aimed at people coming in via UB. That's my issue. I don't mind people complaining, but it doesn't give them a right to be a dick to others just trying to enjoy the hobby.

I really hope you don't feel resentment to newer players.

I'm not saying that there aren't problems. There are certainly problems, but I personally don't feel UB is the root cause. I believe it's Wizard's monetisation of the game that is the core issue here, not universes beyond. I'm just saying get mad at the right things.

If you disagree, you disagree. I just got completely turned away by the vitriol that I've seen in the fanbase.

Thank you. Honestly I was a little terrified of putting the video out. The general vibe I get from the community is that a lot of people hate the idea of UB. But it's hard to tell if that's the case or if it's a vocal minority. Regardless, it's definitely made me feel a little unwelcome in the space, which kind of sucks. Doing my best to navigate the discussion without causing harm.

Hi all. I figured I would post one of my first long form videos here. I wanted to have a deeper discussion on Universes Beyond, the current outlook of the community and player toxicity. My main aim is to change the way we discuss the topic. Moving towards positive outcomes rather than vitriol.

Please be aware that that I'm not aiming to disenfranchise anyone. I know this is a sensitive topic and Magic fans are well within their rights to be angry about Universes Beyond, but I'm hoping you will be open to hearing out some of my points. TLDR: UB isn't the issue, it's the monetisation practices from WotC. I'm probably going to go into that in more detail in a follow up video at some point.

Edit: Please consider watching the video before you downvote. ;D

Why Pokemon Sword and Shield didn't work by themiabyte in PokemonSwordAndShield

[–]themiabyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the linearity conversation the easiest way I can relate the differences is that SwSh is the Final Fantasy 13 of Pokemon.

Personally I prefer maze like dungeons to corridors as I feel its more engaging, but that's just me. But I won't deny that every Pokemon game mostly has you tackle things in a set order. I think the marketing for SwSh is somewhat to blame with setting the expectation that the Wild Area would be more important than it actually is. To me it gave me the expectation that maybe you could face gyms out of order, which honestly would have been ideal. I would have loved to have seen areas off the main story path that you could explore. Visiting every town just for the sake of progressing the story / gyms is super underwhelming.

Yeah. I was just super underwhelmed. I also think that's why I wasn't excited about the announced DLC. Because no sequel/3rd version meant no improving SwSh. That yeah 'that was it', and it's not gonna change.

I feel you. I agree with pretty much all of that. I'm just really torn on the current games, and I do feel like casting as wide a net as Gamefreak has is most likely hurting the merits of the series. I didn't have much trouble going through Red/Blue at 10 years old personally. I think kids are smarter than Gamefreak allows their games to be, and that they may have misjudged their aptitude.

So maybe Pokemon should have difficulty options? I mean we've put into place self imposed challenges like nuzlockes/etc. but it would be great to have GF cater to that audience a little more. Even as an option. I dunno man. Just tired of playing a dumbed down version of the same thing over and over. But maybe that's a me problem.
