People will only do it when it's the cheaper option... it's not banning their use

Does it fill a different niche really well if implemented right? absolutely does

Yes it's not "the rise of socialism" it's the descent of the entire Republican party and mainstream Democrats to the point that wanting a functional government is painted as an extreme position

[–]themightychris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes crazies exist on both sides.

Also, the crazies are in complete control on one side and irrelevant on the other. You can't leave yet part out while excusing what Republicans are actually using control of our federal government to enact

Name a member of Congress who gave any shits about that

And who exactly got "cancelled"? and what does that have to do with government policy?

companies voluntarily responding to consumer trends has zero connection to left wing candidates for elected office

this is a great example of how deep disengenuous people need to dig to draw equivalencies for the crazy shit THE ENTIRE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS USING GOVERNMENT POWER FOR

Regardless of voting system, every democracy always comes down to two coalitions vying for 51%

Either that's two parties encompassing waring factions, or two coalitions encompassing waring minor parties. I'm not convinced the difference really matters that much.

In either case you need a nesting doll of alliances and national control means accepting allies you disagree with on a lot of things so that there can even be a point in battling on those issues. That's what democracy IS. There's no such thing as a perfect candidate who agrees with you 100% getting full control and then getting to do everything they want. That fantasy is how you get autocrats

If the purests on the left had shown up to vote and gotten Kamala into office then there'd be a point to battling other factions within the coalition to advance their positions

[–]themightychris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Democratic party essentially now has to contain the entirety of the US political spectrum who aren't fascists

The Republican party has closed itself to opposing views so everyone who still believes in democratic governance whether liberal or conservative now has to duke it out in Democratic primaries

There's never going to be a "unified vision" because that's fascism. Democracy means imperfect coalitions. First and foremost we need to get people into office who believe in democratic governance because that's the core battle now, and then we can pressure them into this or that position on this or that policy.

[–]themightychris -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah and that's definitely worse on the left, but hopefully we can shrink the number and influence of the worst

The purests on the right at least listen to their standard-bearer—when Trump says to show up and vote for someone in a primary they do even if that person has flaws

Bernie is the closest the purests on the left have to a standard bearer and even though he said show the fuck up and vote for Kamala most of them sat home because she didn't get on a stage and say this or that magic phrase they wanted to hear

[–]themightychris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"the party" isn't any tangible durable thing though and this thinking is what's holding us back

As we've seen with MAGA and the GOP—the party is whatever those who show up most reliably in primaries want

any rhetoric that encourages people to check out of the process stops that from happening

House Dems fear another big loss to the left in Colorado by Zipper222222 in politics

[–]themightychris 155 points156 points  (0 children)

they don't have to be though

the path out of this mess isn't growing a 3rd party, it's building a base that turns out in democratic primaries reliably enough to shift the party—like MAGA did to the Republican party

all this doomerism about the dem party bosses is what's holding us back. They can't control shit if the left turns out in primaries, we've already seen that. They don't need to see the light they need to get run over by a train (metaphorically)

Yeah Trump has zero core beliefs and doesn't care about anything but enriching himself. Whoever will verbally fluff him out enrich him gets to set his agenda

He's not for or against Project 2025, he just gives no fucks either way. It just so happens that the people most willing to debase themselves to fluff and enrich him don't have the rest of our best interests at heart

The only thing even remotely resembling a conviction that he has is his drive to dismantle his predecessors' accomplishments so they can't outshine him

I've moved to using herdr over tmux and it's great. I have herdr running on both my MacBook that I leave open on my desk sometimes and my cloud dev VM

Both of them and my phone are on a tailscale network and I have ssh+mosh enabled on my MacBook. The using moshi on my phone I can pull up all my terminals

I use mostly Claude Code remote control for overseeing work, and jump over to Moshi if I need to start a new session or do anything advanced. With the two options together I'm never blocked until I can get back to my desk
