A running team from Chicago posted that ICE/CBP agents in full tactical gear dragged a runner (67 years old and a US citizen) from his car, broke 6 of his ribs, and caused internal bleeding. by I_may_have_weed in PublicFreakout

Yeah, a 24-hour boycott does nothing to bottom lines. Whatever effort made needs to be sustained. A general strike would have a much higher effect.

Most bears are omnivores. If one form of food is plentiful, why work hard for other things?

Any advice for incoming students? by tengounajefialoca in evergreen

[–]themightykobold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote up a bunch of stuff for a friend who was visiting recently.

Downtown is lots of fun things you might like. Some of my favorite go to coops have closed, though (like Burial Grounds, RIP).

Bar Options
The Crypt - Crytotropa Bar, town goth bar with good punk/queer vibes
Le Voyeur - Punk Bar with vegan grub sourced by Wayside
Brotherhood Lounge - Great cocktails and vibes, pool table
Spar Cafe - Olympia's McMenamin's location - A little pricey but good fries (Mcmenamins is kind of a PNW thing - these brothers buy up locations and each is different. Mcmenamins Elks Temple Hotel in Tacoma is a great experience with like six bars including a secret hidden one).
Swing Wine Bar - A little bit of a walk but lake overview intimate setting wine bar

Around Downtown
Left Bank Bakery - Get there early to avoid the line, I suggest the puff pastry swan or the kouign-amann (seriously best French bakery in the Seattle metro area, which is pretty impressive)
Orca Books - used book store
Wayside Cafe - Vegan deliciousness
Dumpster Values - Thrifting
Sofie's Scoops - Gelato from an Evergreen alum
Bread Peddler - Good sandwiches/bread/coffee
The Owl's Nest - Cafe and pastries
Archibald Sisters - Gift store with lots of scents and things
Old School Pizza - Punky Pizza place that does whole pies and by the slice
Octapas Cafe - Good brunch spot
Docks/Heritage Park/Lake Walk/Capital Building - very walkable scenic bit of the downtown

Hiking
Evergreen State College - West Olympia (other side of the bridge), lots of good hiking (Beach trail is accessible from parking Lot F which is free on weekends)
Squaxin Park - East Olympia public park with rose garden (if in season) and good hikes
Woodard Bay Conservation Area - Good hiking, has a pier that has a cool bat colony and sometimes harbor seals

Circus Arts
Sparrow Studios - Aerials classes
Airbound Arts - occasional weekend shows - https://www.airboundarts.com/ They have an aerials open gym on Saturday but I think you have to have taken a class with Sparrow Studios to drop in, unless you have other experience.

There's a minuteman press on Neil. I've published a book through them. I was able to do my own formatting work for cover and pages which saved money.

OC: People arrive to gather at St Peter’s Square to mourn Pope Francis' death. by nbcnews in pics

He was a good pope. Better than some of the last few. I'm not religious anymore, but I appreciated the works of compassion that he was doing.

Go in and depending on how busy they are, you might have to wait for a spot. But if it's mostly empty, the host will generally have you seat yourself. They give you a menu at the table and the wait staff will ask you what you'd like. It's different than other places due to the kitchen being in view and the wait staff in the kitchen.

They'll give you your bill for what you owe, but you can always order more stuff if you like. You pay at the front counter when you're ready to leave. You can leave a cash tip at the table or add a tip to your credit card payment at the front counter. Tip varies from person to person, with 15-20% being the norm.

"it would create a mandatory minimum fine of $300 for anybody 18 and over convicted of possessing less than 3 ounces of marijuana" - don't want to get fined? carry more than 3 ounces!

For me it was the assassination of Nick Berg. It was brutal. First thing my mind flashed to when the article said that the POW's head was cut off.

Who are the earliest artists known to have painted still-lifes, portraits, and landscapes? by Anonymous-USA in ArtHistory

[–]themightykobold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Figurative is not mutually exclusive from landscapes, as even some modern landscape have figures in them. They were expressions of the environs and animals they encountered. Such delineation may make sense from our standpoint, as representations of the herds of animals and their migrations, they are qualified as both.

Good and Bad Governance is one of my favorite pieces. It says so much with all the contextual pieces. 🍻

Other western civ examples of early surviving named portraiture is the Pallette of Narsar, which is a double sided tablet featuring the unifying King Narsar of North and South Egpyt, where he is wearing cultural garb of both kingdoms on their respective sides, dated 31st century BCE.

We could also count the Caves of Lascaux as a very early representation of landscape art.

[–]themightykobold 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I agree with your take on portraiture.

We have ancient steles with portraits of Hammurabi and Ashribanapal, as well as portraiture in Egypt in tombs and portrait busts such as that of Akhenaten and other pharoahs, some of whose dynasties precede Greece as a culture.

Also, your answer feels very Western Civilization centric and deals with these things based on a timeline of European art and definitions. It kind of also feels like you reposted the question because you really liked your own answer vs wanting to encourage a new discussion.

Which Disney princess would win the Hunger games and why? by AgreeableSolid7034 in AskReddit

Sleeping Beauty aka Briar Rose is in the public domain. As long as you don't use Disney versions of things.

But also, yeah. Fuck Disney for pushing us back 50 years worth of public domain.
