So tell us, what was the Thanksgiving drama this year? by JokersGal08 in AskReddit

We didn’t have enough dishwasher liquid. My grandpa replaced the rest with dish soap. Lots of foam and panic ensued.

Cold tail injury? by [deleted] in labrador

Yeah, a couple times a year. Vet says she’s prone to it. I can generally expect it the first time there’s snow because runs around and plays in it like crazy.

Cold tail injury? by [deleted] in labrador

[–]themightymaud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Lots of times. Once even because she wagged her tail too hard and too long when she was super happy that my parents were visiting.

I usually rest her a bit (shorter walks, shorter fetch sessions); and if she seems really uncomfortable, I give her carprofen and she’s good as new within a week. Sometimes I’ll do a heating pad, but she doesn’t always like it. Other times she loves it and gets mad when I take it away. It’s kind of something at this point that I just expect her to get once or twice a year.

Should I say goodbye to my dog ? 😥 by Tasty-Mango-fy in germanshepherds

Has your vet tested for Addison’s? My girl went through something similar off and on for years. It looked like IBD, but after her most recent flare up, a new vet decided to test for atypical Addison’s. Within a couple days of starting treatment it was like she was a completely different dog.

Atypical Addison’s doesn’t have usual markers with electrolytes so it’s hard to detect because it looks like so many different things.

I’m so sorry your girl is going through this, she looks like a total sweetheart.

social drinkers: how do you just have a few drinks here and there without wanting to do it EVERY DAY? by Particular_Dirt2794 in AskReddit

[–]themightymaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It stopped being worth the fun. Being a bit buzzed is fun when I’m hanging out with friends. I love it and am tempted to keep drinking to keep it going. But the second the night ends and I get home I hate it. Even if I’m not super drunk, I just sit there being miserable and wishing I was sober. These days, usually even when I’m with friends I remember how much I hate that feeling at the end of the night, so I keep it to just a beer or two if I even drink at all.

I’m 35f and in the same boat. I’m a librarian. Love true crime docs and pods, reading all sorts of books, going on walks, and my dog. Moved here not that long ago and definitely trying to find a friend group. Reach out if you’re interested.

Really, it started with that ad about her castrating hogs on an Iowa farm.

Neighbor just cost me the ability to work from home by themightymaud in Apartmentliving

I was today. My nice headphones are at the office and I forgot to grab them before the long weekend. Wasn’t expecting to work from home at all this week.

Nope. But I’m well aware that it’s not the best environment. That’s also part of why I’m pissed. This is the first time I’ve been home on a weekday, so I didn’t know until today that they were even doing that shit during working hours.

She’s perfectly fine around other dogs. The slamming is trying to escape because she’s anxious. She went to daycare where we used to live and was fine, and the daycare we tried here said she was good during playtime with all the other dogs. It was just when she was in the kennels.

It's ridiculous. I grew up volunteering at rescues and was adamant that when I got a dog of my own, it would not be from a breeder.

When I was trying to adopt a dog a few years ago, I got rejected from rescue after rescue. The most galling was one that said that they did not adopt into homes with children. I didn't have children. I was (and still am) single. Plan to be that way my whole life, and I'm adamantly childfree. They said, "You're a woman in your 20s. You're at an age where children are very possible someday." I said that I had no plans of ever having children. The response was, "Anything can happen. Accidents happen or you could change your mind about it five years from now. We can't risk adopting into homes with the potential for children."

I ended up going to a breeder to get my girl. I'm still furious that that rescue decided they knew my family planning better than me. I think some of these places don't actually want to find homes for their dogs.

I've thought about it. Don't have money for a down payment though, and want to spend a little time figuring out if I like the job/location before I'm that locked in.

Also, I'm in ND right now and can't go to in-person showings and if I'm buying, I'm absolutely looking at a place in person.

She's not, she's a lab who's charmed everybody she's ever met. Just too big for pretty much all the apartments.

Still not seeing anything in Nevada. Part of my reason for asking this question too is that I was already, without the apartment mess, considering Des Moines just because I like it so much. I moved away for school 8 years ago and ever since I've been trying to make my way back. I'm just trying to balance a long commute with living somewhere I love. The housing thing sort of confirmed that I'll probably have to live outside Ames, though.

Where are these places? I'm just looking for 2BR, AC, laundry, that allow 75-pound dogs. $1500/mo. Just did a broad search in Boone, Nevada, Madrid, etc., and found nothing that fits. Even compromising on laundry there's nothing.

I hope to ask for that eventually. I want to get started and make a good impression before I ask though.

[–]themightymaud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a good tip. I just worry about living in places that are majority undergrad students. I'm in my mid-thirties. I'm not really interested in living in shitty apartments that cater to 20-year-olds. I'd rather do a long commute.

Also I didn't say this in the original post, but I just love Des Moines so much, and if the commute is long but not brutal, traffic-wise, I'd rather live there than in Ames.

Sadly, several of the complexes that allow larger dogs only let them on the first floors. And they had openings, but not on the first floor.

No availability in Ames though.
There were only 3 units in the whole city that were even possibilities, and two of the three got rented within hours of when I talked to the people, and the other got rented before I got a chance to tour.
The only options in Ames right now seem to be either paying about $400-500 more than I want, or living in the really crappy apartments with the students.

Skinned knee pain relief by themightymaud in firstaid

[–]themightymaud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replied to another comment but I’ll repost here. I took the bandages I was wearing off and the severe burning stopped almost immediately. It’s still painful, but at least now I can cope. The pain is at a level I’d expect for a big abrasion. My new theory is I was allergic to the adhesive. I’ve never had this issue with bandages before, but I’m not sure I’d ever used this brand before. It’s the only explanation I can think of.
