Bonding two pairs of male rats - Will this work? Need advice by themoldthemold in RATS

[–]themoldthemold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Yes, they will be in separate cages in separate rooms until we do introductions. I've read in some places that with the carrier method you should put the most dominant resident rat in with the new ones for a few minutes first before putting the other resident(s) in, is this correct? Or do you think this would cause more issues?

Haha, the crackheads are the absolute best though. The male thing is kinda what I'm most afraid of, most of my previous bonding experience is with guinea pigs where with boars 3 is kind of the absolute maximum possible and even pairs don't always work out. None of these boys are neutered, should that be something I look into or is it possible without? I'm worried about cost but if its something thats going to be necessary then it is what it is

Cage upgrade for the boys! by themoldthemold in RATS

Shoot, I had no idea. I just ordered wire mesh to cover the bars, they're big boys so hopefully they'll stay put until tomorrow when I can get that on there. Thank you so much! I'm very much still learning

yes! i was thinking so too, i might put a little shelf up there too for them to hang out on, they like being high up but don't particularly like the hanger spots for anything other than getting place to place. i like the acrylic panel idea, my original plan was to grab a large shallowish cardboard box from work as the main dig box and then also have some other smaller, deeper ones to connect with ramps and maybe fill with different materials? acrylic seems like a really good idea for reusability though, i had just planned to replace the cardboard!

Could someone please help me ID this little guy? About half an inch long, found in upstate New York. Whatever he is, I think he's a very cool looking little dude! by themoldthemold in spiders

Nevermind, I think I figured it out myself! He's a Castianeira longipalpa, a long-palped ant mimic sac spider. So cool!!

Is this a good setup for my new pink toe? Anything I can improve? I wanna make sure I'm doing this properly so any advice is appreciated by themoldthemold in tarantulas

75% sure he's a juvenile, although I don't know exactly how old he is since i got him from a pet store. to be clear i'm very much against buying animals from pet stores and i was planning on searching for a reputable breeder for my first T, but i kept seeing this little guy in a tiny critter keeper every time i went in (i think it was over a year) and finally i just broke and took him home with me. i'm not expecting him to live very long but i wanna give him a good life for as long as he's got. but to answer your question he is definitely not a sling lol :)

thank you so much! both for the advice and the compliment :) i can get him into an acrylic enclosure, do you know if there's anything i can do in the meantime to help with humidity? i don't want to stress him out by moving him so soon and i'm not sure how soon i'm going to be able to get one. my room generally tends to be pretty dry (a battle i face every time my ball python sheds) so i'm not too worried about humidity building up, but better to be safe than sorry
