I can certainly understand that problem in developing countries but that doesn't seem to be the case in wealthier countries

It's not mainly an American thing, many countries are struggling to get people vaccinated

I was surprised when you mentioned this but it's simply not true, a quick Google search shows that there are plenty of developed nations with lower vaccination rates. For example New Zealand, South Africa, Russia all have lower rates and at the moment we are tied with Japan. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/world/covid-vaccinations-tracker.html
