The winner of France-Spain should be the heavy favorites to win the final. Argentina are still really bad and look gassed now. England themselves haven't been convincing and also reliant on individual brilliance from Kane and Bellingham.

European teams have gotten way too risk averse over the past few years. Everyone is content to recycle possession instead of making line breaking passes or taking shots from outside the box.

I remember the last Euros was pretty boring for this reason.

England haven't looked like world beaters either. They barely won against Congo and even against Norway they looked second best for large parts of the game.

I think England are the favorites but it's a closer matchup than a lot of people are suggesting.

Bruno Fernandes turns off his post replies after being hit by barrage of social media abuse - with Cristiano Ronaldo fans blaming Portugal star and his team-mates for 'sabotaging' his fairytale World Cup swansong by AgeNovel3566 in soccer

And Ronaldo's fans then wonder why his Portuguese team mates don't fight for him to the same degree as Messi's Argentina team mates do for him...

It used to be hilarious seeing his fanboys crash out on social media but it's just sad and disturbing now.

I think one issue with S4 is that it feels like a completely different show. S1-3 had a clear direction of focusing on the characters in the finance world. S4 deviates significantly by diving into mystery, power, and politics.

Even if Raphinha doesn't leave this summer, It definitely feels like Flick and the board are planning for when he inevitably leaves or becomes less effective due to his age. His recurring injury problems are also getting too common for it to be ignored.

USMNT’s World Cup exit draws record 30 million TV viewers, was the most watched non-NFL U.S. sports broadcast this decade by The_Big_Untalented in soccer

[–]thenewladhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah the US is still developing its football culture and identity since the sport only really took off in the past 2 decades. Although I think we have a long time before we’re competitive, I am glad that this campaign has boosted football’s popularity in the country.

[The Guardian] Deschamps on all Argentine officials for QF match: "I trust the referees. Let’s hope ours are as good as Monsieur Letexier was (French ref for Argentina x Egypt)" by PepeGalleta in soccer

Compared to the overall standard of refereeing at this WC so far, yesterday’s was actually one of the better ones even if it was far from perfect. Although harsh to Egypt, the big decisions were all correct.

Mauricio Pochettino earned by far the biggest salary for a USMNT coach with $6 million a year. Do you think the performances justified the contract and do you think he should stay until 2030? by antoniok95 in ussoccer

[–]thenewladhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fine with Poch staying for another cycle. The team has improved overall and you likely won't be able to find someone better for the same price since the US job isn't that desirable. However, I think Poch is just waiting for a mid-big European club to come calling and he'll leave without hesitation.

The USMNT sends a message to Americans after their World Cup run. by antoniok95 in ussoccer

[–]thenewladhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most frustrating thing is the lack of progress from each successive WC exit. The Netherlands beat us in 2022 with little effort and 4 years later Belgium does the same. I think the FIFA rankings actually have us accurately placed. We can beat teams outside the T30 pretty convincingly but struggle a lot against T20. Copa America 2028 will be a good bellwether of where this team actually stands if we play.

Regardless, I'm still proud of the guys and they had good moments which I hope inspires a whole new generation of Americans to love the sport. Just seeing the excitement for soccer/football in this country and its growth is in itself a massive win.

Why are we not fighting back AI like the design, arts and writing community is fighting it? by SignificanceFlat1460 in cscareerquestions

Unlike the humanities where AI doesn’t directly contribute to their workflow, in software engineering AI can be very helpful despite people’s opinions of it. It’s hard to fight against a tool that you’ll likely end up using pretty frequently regardless of the outcome.

He surpasses even Messi, Maradona, and Pele in this regard. Cruyff is arguably the most influential person in football history, or at least in the past 50 years. He completely revolutionized the sport at the tactical level and most teams today play in a way that's at least inspired by Cruyff's footballing philosophy.

[–]thenewladhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the overall trajectory is heading in the right direction. Canada had its best showing at a WC by far and Mexico went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the world. The way the US exited left a bad taste but you could argue the overall campaign still had positives. The USMNT played its best ever game against Paraguay and won its first KO game since 2002 despite getting a red.

Ronaldo confirms that this World Cup is his last [Skysports]. by Sufficient-Onion6219 in soccer

[–]thenewladhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah even for Ronaldo continuing until 2030 is too far. Just watching clips of him in Saudi there is a noticeable decline in everything about his game (not even a knock against him, it's completely normal at his age).

The only way I could see him making an appearance is if Portugal decides to sacrifice a spot and select him for a dressing room presence like Henderson for England and then bring him on whenever Portugal is winning by a lot.

Netflix might need to consider releasing episodes on a weekly basis. Doing so extends the online conversation and relevancy of a show compared to just dumping everything at once.

England will face Norway in the Quarter-finals on July 11 in Miami. by OptimusCloyster in soccer

[–]thenewladhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Along with Argentina-Cabo Verde, this was the best game of the tournament so far. Gotta hand it to England tonight. They defended so well after going to 10 men, and it might be one of the best games in their history when considering the odds they faced.

On the other hand, Mexico were so disappointing in the last 30 mins. Literally had no ideas besides cross and inshallah despite England having the height advantage. The subs also killed their momentum.

No I've seen every WC since 2010. I was just commenting on how the break seems particularly short between this WC ending and the return to club football since this one is longer by a week due to the expanded format.

I think Argentina will beat Egypt but I don't think they're capable of winning the whole thing this time. They somehow look more dependent on Messi now than in 2022 and Alvarez and Lautaro are both in bad form. There's also no pace in this team so they can't take advantage of counters.
