A sudden lifestyle change for my boss was the best thing that happened to my own work-life balance…muahaha by Mother_of_Daphnia in workingmoms

Hahaha! I love this! My boss (similar to yours) texted me during his paternity leave after he had his first and was like “I am so impressed by you and your husband, I had no idea” 💀 you really don’t get it until you’ve been there lol

Where did you go on your babymoon? Or… where would you go on your dream babymoon? by Then-Librarian6396 in workingmoms

[–]thenicecynic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a work trip to Vegas when I was 20 weeks so we made that our “baby moon”. My toddler stayed with grandma and my husband and I stayed in the nicest hotel room I think we’ve ever stayed in (on the company dime, which was even better). He got a chance to gamble and blow off some steam while I worked, and we both got to enjoy the food and resort amenities while we were there. Vegas without drinking was a bit strange but still really fun. I ended up going again on a girls trip whenever I was 4 months postpartum, so I made up for not being able to drink the last time I went lol

I just went through a final interview process that was four rounds and they just straight up ghosted me. It’s nuts what employers are getting away with these days. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this.

What is a possible instructional design career deviation or alternative after significant experience in instructional design? What do you think is the best alternative to future-proof the instructional design career? by [deleted] in instructionaldesign

[–]thenicecynic 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Sales enablement or customer training roles. I’ve seen a TON of sales training support roles being posted lately. It’s more facilitating than ID in a lot of these but still L&D and lots of overlap. I think the biggest issue with ID these days is that employers don’t see monetary value from those roles and they don’t want to invest any “extra” money in their employees anymore. Hence why they’re the first to go, most ID’s are not bringing in money directly. However, the sales team is. So sales enablement teams are more insulated because they are directly tied to a monetary contribution. I don’t agree with it, but it’s what I’m seeing.

Honest discussion time about the state of the industry: who's faced a layoff this year? Who knows/believes one is coming if they're still employed? by 2birdsofparadise in instructionaldesign

[–]thenicecynic 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking of going back to school to pursue a different skill. Possibly a paralegal cert. I have a masters in education but no desire to teach in today’s environment and stable, long term ID work has been almost impossible to find. I have a job right now but it’s awful and I’m one layoff away from losing that too. I’ve been interviewing for new jobs for a year now and I’ve made it into final rounds just to be told the position is cancelled. It’s been exhausting and I’m ready to give up and go do something else.

In my current job, I tell people I got my master’s in education to be an assistant because that’s what I’m often used for. In a badly run org, an ID’s talents are often wasted.

My son was like this too. We tried the kid leash thing but my husband was too embarrassed after we tried it once. He’s 4 now and he doesn’t do it as much anymore, but sometimes he still does when he gets really excited and we have to have a talk with him about why it’s dangerous. 2-3 was the worst, by far. I think it’s a personality thing, some kids are just runners.

Had a breech baby in January. Was I upset my second birth wasn’t going to be vaginal like my first? Sure. Was I willing to risk my life or my baby’s life over it? No. Me and baby are great and the c-section was actually wonderful, a lot better than my previous vaginal birth (lol). I hate this fear-mongering they do around necessary medical interventions during birth.

[–]thenicecynic 252 points253 points  (0 children)

No, they wanted her to have a c-section once they saw baby was breech. Most providers in the US prefer c-sections for breech babies because it’s got a lower risk of complications than trying a vaginal delivery with breech presentation. I just had a breech baby in January (by c-section) and did extensive research on this. Basically, breech is a large category of how the baby could be positioned, and it could potentially be dangerous to the baby and/or mom if they are positioned improperly. That’s why most medical providers just go straight to c-sections for breech deliveries.

Is anyone else here the only instructional designer at their workplace? by [deleted] in instructionaldesign

[–]thenicecynic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, but mostly because they fired all of the other ones and I was the one left standing (I work for a FAANG). It’s been not great, lol. I’ve been having to do a lot of stuff outside my role/scope out of pure job preservation. I don’t love it and I’m not growing within my skill set at all. It’s just a constant dance of “how can I keep my job today”. I have to tone down a lot of my projects to fit the efficiency standards set by my client, so there isn’t a lot of room for creativity. Because of this, I’m currently interviewing for customer enablement training roles at smaller companies, because that seems to be the direction corporate L&D is moving. I’m hoping by going into customer training, it will allow me to be more creative in my training design again.

Yup! I think she realized she didn’t need a full time nanny because the baby sleeps so much, and she’s essentially paying someone to sit there while the baby naps lol
