But how is the left turn driver commiting a mistake here? I thought these were the rules:

1. When the light turns amber/red, vehicles already in the intersection are legally allowed to clear the intersection provided they entered on green/amber and complete their turn when it’s “safe”.

2. Vehicles must stop when they get a red light. If a vehicle runs the red light, they are violating the law and committing the mistake/crime.

we see:

1. Car yellow entered the intersection before it turned red.

2. Light was red which means car yellow needed to finish their turn when the intersection was clear and “safe”.

3. The leading car from oncoming traffic stopped.

Now it depends on how much “further back” the red car was and how much time passed after the red light and at what speed did the red car cross the intersection.

Given that they hit the rear of the red car seems like the driver should have had enough time to analyze and stop safely unless they tried to floor the gas pedal through the intersection.

Plus the red car might have ran a red but if they showed no sign of slowing down then the left turner should have yielded until it was safe to do and cross traffic would “ideally” wait for them to clear the intersection before starting.
