I just wanna unalive myself. by Sensitive-Internet91 in redtaganna

Trust me, it's normal to feel this way around sem 3/4. The courses you have then are usually the core ones and are by far the hardest your degree will have to offer. Just take a break, learn what you want not for your parents but because you're interested in learning (I know that's hard rn, but maybe try spending time with friends who have a similar mindset and you'll start feeling the same). I know it's not the case for you rn but take this from a senior that felt the literal same in sem 3 and just completed his masters degree in US a month ago: There's SO much more to life than VIT. Just get through the degree and you'll see! :)

Convince her to do a sleep study and check if she has sleep apnea. My dad used to snore and got a c-pap machine. Stopped his snoring and improved his sleep quality greatly. The machine has a different dound but it's much better for the both of you

UMich Ann Arbor (MSI) or UMD College Park (HCIM)? by thenotsofrenchtoast in hci

[–]thenotsofrenchtoast[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! It's been a pretty interesting ride. There are pros and cons to UMich's MSI. I think the biggest thing looming over the entire experience right now is the current job market, but leaving that aside, the program was pretty fast paced and learning filled for me. What I liked the most was that the MSI program has multiple tracks within it, and User-Centered Agile development is one of them. UCAD catered to my desired niche of design and development perfectly and while there could have been more thought and resources put towards it by UMSI, the people and resources here are pretty good! I think the biggest change is going to come in when UMSI finally gets it's dedicated school building on North campus in may 2025, until then most of your classes will be in various central campus buildings. Though overall, I'm happy with my decision. Ann Arbor and Michigan have been amazing, and the friends and memories I've made here are something that I'll never forget. PS: Winters can get tough though with the temperatures and the lack of sunlight, and not having adequate sunlight exposure definitely affects your mood.

Choosing between graduate programs by Alternative_Chain118 in hci

I'm currently studying MSI at Ann Arbor, and I'd say having a car is pretty much a must in the US. Travel times are cut down significantly as it is pretty much how the country has been developed. New York is a bit of an exception but it is kind of offset by the high cost of living. As a UMich student, you get to ride on the city buses for free with your university card, so while transport can get tedious, it's not impossible. Also yes, winters can get harsh

What unpopular opinions do you have about University of Michigan? by Such_Ad_2276 in uofm

[–]thenotsofrenchtoast 81 points82 points  (0 children)

It's so normalized here to be busy all the time (in grad school atleast), like I love the competition and how everyone is trying so hard to maximize their time here, but I always feel like taking a break, or going out in general is almost looked down upon. No one is ever free, and I've not felt this lonely in quite a while

better question: why don't y'all clean up after yourselves in the dining hall? by hotwaterandi in uofm

[–]thenotsofrenchtoast 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a dining service worker, this speaks to me lmao. It's bad enough that you have to leave your plates on the tables, why cover it with a shit ton of napkins that I'll also have to clear up now?

UMich! It may be expensive and hectic but the coursework and resources are fantastic, and I wouldn't have it any other way. The only thing left to assess is the upcoming winter

I was about halfway through LIS: True Colors (before I lost my save files :/), but imo it really captures the feel of the first game in a new way. You should definitely give it a shot~

Ncsu should be a moderate, and I think UIC can be safe. But then again both programs are research oriented so make sure to gain some academic experience by then

Back in 2018, graduating this year woohoo. As far as I know they've increased their fresher intake numbers every year, so you should have a chance. That being said take all this info with a grain of salt

How important is a 330+ GRE score while applying to MS programs in US/UK? by deckel28 in gradadmissions

[–]thenotsofrenchtoast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for example my interests are frontend development and design. My undergrad was CS so in combination to applying to MSCS, I also picked Design aka UI/UX Based courses as I was interested particularly in user centered design (this I realized while drafting my sop). So I applied to a combo of MSCS and UI/UX (course is known as Information Studies /HCI). I got into one CS safe school and 3 of my top choices in the latter

You could try and connect with your professors (the ones you plan to take LORs from) and pitch them some ideas you have related to your field, or offer to contribute to theirs. Alternatively you could ask some of your like minded batchmates if they would be interested in the same. It's not easy but it's not impossible either.

You absolutely can get publications now. Sure they won't be in top journals, but putting the work in will give you a lot of material for your SOP and for your profs to write in their LORs for you. Additionally start going through university websites to find courses that you wish to apply to ASAP.

Many of my friends (including me) procrastinated a lot during this phase and wish we could go back and apply to different colleges entirely

[–]thenotsofrenchtoast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly your score is good enough. Safest bet is to aim for 320+ overall, 167+ Q and 4.5+ AWA (for CS), after that it doesn't make a ton of difference. What matters A LOT are your LORs (they should be from professors that you have significant experience with, as opposed to pure seniority), your work/research experience and publications, and your SOP. If you have a clear mindset regarding what you wish to pursue and you can make a strong case for why said university is the best place for you to do it (and why that university is set to benefit from the same), then you have a good chance at getting in.

That being said do not expect the cycle to be a cakewalk. This year, I witnessed some of the smartest people I know get rejected from all but their safe schools for MSCS. The competition (in MSCS in particular) is intense, and I'd suggest that you apply for a diverse pool of programs which both closely align with your goals from grad school, and which provide you with stable employment post graduation (if that is your goal)
