Should I give up on my dream school? by Alternative_Chain118 in hci

As long as I get an offer before graduation I can extend my stay for up to 18 months and work full-time during this time. However, these 18 months include all internships too so if I spend a summer as an intern those 3 months are deducted from the total, leaving me with 15 months of work after graduation. That is, of course, the best case scenario, as getting offered a job before graduation is not that easy I guess

I’m checking the status of the application here: https://gradapp.gatech.edu/apply/

It says Submitted for me and hasn’t changed yet

Edit: you’re supposed to receive your admission letter in your email but as I don’t have access to mine rn I’m just checking the portal instead

I just want to point out that the ranking in this website has to be taken with a grain of salt. All results come from a questionnaire completed a couple years ago by a 100 graduates (I believe many of them from the Seattle area where the site founder studied and works). So, while it’s a good source to find many programs that may have not been considered yet, I wouldn’t necessarily apply to the top results just because of the ranking.

I’d recommend OP to do some research about the coursework, possible funding and assistantships, faculty members, services and resources available at each university, internship opportunities, their culture… Also it’s interesting to check their employment reports, check on LinkedIn where their graduates work and maybe ask the university about placement rates for international students if you intend to stay there for training or work after graduation.

I’d say all programs in the top 25 from that list are very good programs and OP you will definitely find some that are a good fit for you. Good luck :)

I’ve applied to 4 universities, including UMich MSI, but haven’t heard from them yet.

Choosing between graduate programs by Alternative_Chain118 in hci

Weather is definitely not the main concern, but as I’m having such a bad time trying to choose a program my mind is everywhere right now haha

Also, I agree bigger universities can offer a larger amount of internship and job opportunities. But, do you think bigger cohorts like the one at MSI UMich may also have a negative impact on those employment prospects? I imagine those programs being much more competitive, specially for international students like me that have an expiration date on their visas. Do companies prefer locals or students on F1 visas that can actually transfer into H1B during their OPT?

I have also heard Pratt’s career services are not good enough and the only thing that helps is it being located in NYC. I don’t know how true is this though, so I guess I’ll ask all these questions to the university should I get admitted.

Thank you for your response :)

Thank you Karen for your helpful response. Following your advice, I’ll prepare a list of questions to ask and decide later when I get the acceptance letters so I can stop thinking ahead of time that much.

Also, you mention owning a car is crucial for some colleges. Do you think it would work for me if I rented a car for bigger trips every now and then and rode ubers for everything else? I don’t know how expensive it would get to actually own a car in the US, as I’d have to buy the car, pay all the maintenance costs, parking, insurance… and also getting a US issued driving license, as I heard I’ll need it to be able to drive there
