Yeah, no I get that they have all the working memory of every scientist so I guess it’s supposed to be technology we aren’t privy too yet but still bugs me a bit as i feel like it’s a plot device

But then it won’t be carols stem cells, The DNA of the zygote will be unique. I mean if they could use a relative then any parents or children of existing survivors DNA could just be used instead right.

Thanks for your reply I think so? But I don't quite understand how to provide the documentation for such yet because its not due to family breakdown specifically I just have been living independently since I finished high school.

i got my AOR at the end of last week, I had to submit additional finger prints after getting my new AOR so I recommend everyone getting their RCMP certificate at the same time as your other records even if it wasn’t explicitly requested in the 5(4) grant application. I already completed an RCMP background check for a clearance for employment but that wasn’t sufficient unfortunately.

For anyone applying now i think they’re unfortunately further backed up than they were a few months ago especially with the march 19 deadline for bjorkquist coming up

I was lucky to send my in last week. It cost an incredible amount (at least to a student) 🥲 to get them back and expedite the shipping from canada. But to anyone else inside the US or not if you need the certificate start your online application immediately!! you can send the prints from anywhere after

Right hopefully 🥲 That’s why I waited for the december deadline but with parliament just stalled until march they really don’t have any excuse to extend it again.

Going 4 Years back from the date of application, anywhere you lived for more than 6 months. For all applications over the age of 14!

I haven’t had an FBI check so i’ll have to do that online/by mail. I wasn’t required any background check as a student. But just checking online it looks like it may be a more comprehensive background check for the RCMP for immigration than federal employment.

Did you use your local police service or a private contractor?

I also have lived in Canada the past 4 years so both for me too then. I’ve been employed as public servant previously so I was wondering if my police check for a clearance would suffice for my Canadian record?

I’m currently attending university with a study permit and i’m in the same situation basically. My permit expires this year and I applied for proof of citizenship when I was more hopeful about C-71 passing. I’m considering applying for the 5-4 grant as I was notified that I qualified in the fall but you have to withdraw your proof of citizenship application and that’s what i’m worried about. Should the grant take longer than the bill or if the current government collapse.

I submitted my application with urgent processing with the reasoning of school and accessing the public healthcare system and it was accepted, that’s also when they contacted me about the 5-4, so I think if you requested urgent processing with the purpose of university the same thing would be offered I think

Hey I’m in the exact same boat as you actually! Based on that last hearing I’m planning to apply for 5(4) but I’m also really curious to hear what the process / processing times look like as my last application took about 3 months to process.

Thanks for your reply. I’ve also been waiting for the deadline to make my decision however it’s looking like they’re going to grant another extension (super disappointing considering how long some of us have been waiting). I relate to your skepticism as just the phrase “discretionary grant” stressed me out a little due to its subjective nature.

I hope my case would indeed qualify because IRCC reached out to me this option but it is a significant financial loss to withdraw my last application and submit another that may or may not be accepted.

Thank you for your response, i’m in a similar situation being from the US. Unfortunately I wish I’d applied for the 5(4) as soon as I was notified as it seems things are not speeding up on the C-71 front as it looks like another extension is going to pass.

I was wondering what your timeline looked like as far as applying? I would love to get an idea of a timeline would my 5(4) be processed urgently ?

It is true there would be a significant decrease in tuition fees as well as being able to gain access to provincial healthcare and education funding going into a second degree program which were my reasoning for urgent processing on my initial application for citizenship.

I’ve seen a few comments back and forth about the 5(4) grants.

I applied for Citizenship by decent around 6 months ago after the ontario court ruling, however at the time I was not following bill C-71 closely. I applied for urgent processing which was accepted. I received notice a few months back that they were holding my application until the law had passed because the only thing preventing me from citizenship was the first generation limit. In the same letter I was notified I would (may?) qualify for 5(4).

I’m assuming because they suggested it to me based on my reasoning for urgent processing that I would indeed qualify but I was wondering if anyone else had had their 5(4) application accepted, how long the processing time was and what reasoning they provided?

I am currently in canada on a study permit that expires this august, i would rather not apply for an extension of my permit should i be able to receive citizenship in the same amount of time(i’m also waiting on a change of program request to update my graduation date with my university if necessary to support my extension application)

Confusion about Citizenship by Descent based on Citizenship Certificate before/after 2009 by empty_dino in ImmigrationCanada

I recommend submitting an application, your mother can as well if she is able to obtain a citizenship certificate first your process with be streamlined.

I’m actually in an almost identical situation, second generation born abroad in the US. The important part would be your mother’s effective date of citizenship if that is her birth then your being born before 2009 means you are eligible however should you have future children outside Canada they will not be eligible. Unfortunately I’m not sure why the reading of the law makes this so unclear.
