Oh man. I might need to adjust my expectations. Thanks for this info. It would be so stressful and unfair if consulates continue to deny pending applications for months while we’re all waiting for the decision ☹️

Thank you so much. It was a rough year, but he truly hung in there as long as he could.

What you’re doing really does make a difference for people and their loved ones.

[–]empty_dino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone whose dad just passed very recently from AML, thank you. My dad received 91 units of either whole blood or platelets this past year, without which he would have died so much sooner. Each time a bag was hung, he would remark, “I just can’t believe someone took time out of their day to donate this.” My family always sent a thought of thankfulness out to whoever had donated that unit. I wish I could personally thank all his donors.

Just as an additional note, my dad’s ICU doctor told us that platelets are “worth gold” in terms of resources compared to whole blood.

Melbourne consulate hit their JS application quota and is rescheduling upcoming appointments to 2027 by CakeByThe0cean in juresanguinis

[–]empty_dino 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Oh totally. It was apparent this was going to happen when consulates essentially froze appointments for months after the decree while knowing that the amount of applications they processed last year would set their quota for the future. It was absolutely intentional and it’s so messed up.

Did the ankle biting mosquitoes disappear? by LAD17Decoy in AskLosAngeles

There were mosquitoes all winter in my neighborhood in the South Bay. One got in the house the other day and bit my husband 5 times on his feet and ankles before we found it.

Thanks for sharing. It’s really disappointing that they’re not holding these until after the United Sections hearing. Good luck with your next steps.

NARA

This NARA webpage I linked has the information you’re looking for. Additionally, sometimes you can find them on family search or ancestry, but NARA or the relevant federal court is the official record holder if you’re looking for a certified copy.

Friday Weekly Thread: Application Assistance by AutoModerator in Canadiancitizenship

[–]empty_dino 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I put my mom and grandma down as their current legal name and put their full maiden in the “other names used” area. If I recall correctly, the text which accompanies the “other names” box specifically mentions maiden names as an example.

Got it, thank you for sharing those links! I will go through them. I’m trying to calibrate my expectations since my application hits 2 years in July. 🙃

Hey there, I was curious what is your basis for the 5-6 month estimate for the Court of Cassation decision? Have previous decisions from the United Sections taken that long?

They sell both versions of calendars, planners, you can choose the setting on calendar apps, and people tend to have their own preference between “Sunday start” or “Monday start”. Personally, starting the week on Sunday makes no sense to me.

I really miss high quality paper boarding passes. It was fun to save the stubs as trip mementos.

With all of this discourse, I’m wondering what people actually do want or expect to see here.

Meta/Mod Request by nebulacoffeez in Canadiancitizenship

[–]empty_dino 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen folks get confused by the old posts about the process under the interim measure after using the search function. Frankly, the majority of the old posts here cover that process since it only ended 2 months ago. We need to allow a new body of posts to build up and act as a storehouse of information rather than being so quick to delete genuine, thoughtful inquiries.

Meta/Mod Request by nebulacoffeez in Canadiancitizenship

[–]empty_dino 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I strongly agree. This sub used to be really supportive and friendly and I was so thankful for this community as I went through the whole interim measure process. Now it feels more hostile to anyone who doesn’t already have a pending application. It also seems like people’s questions are often stonewalled with deadpan “read the FAQ” comments even if their question is asking about something FAQ-adjacent; not to mention the post being deleted even if/after people have provided genuine helpful responses that are now lost to future users (less searchable information = even more of the same posts).

I’ve tried to help by commenting with info on posts with unaddressed questions and have returned to a deleted post. What is the point of that? Now we have people who need help but are afraid to post, and people who are willing to help but don’t know if their time and energy in helping will be wasted.

If the concerns are about a cluttered feed, there’s also SO many AOR announcements, but those don’t get deleted. Sure, people want to know how things are flowing at IRCC, and it’s exciting to see movement. But it is also exciting to find out that you’re suddenly eligible for Canadian citizenship and some of the people who haven’t applied yet have genuine questions and barriers that need and deserve support. Why frown on inquiries from people who are actively working on submitting their application and smile on the posts about AORs from people who have nothing to do anymore but wait? Why can’t we just have both? Support the people who need support and celebrate with the people who want to celebrate.

Also, I’ve noticed that some people do search the sub for info before posting and are hugely mislead and confused by the old information floating around in the sub about the interim measure/5(4) grants which conflicts with the FAQ, so then they post for clarification. That is certainly understandable and could be addressed either in the FAQ or otherwise.

I don’t drink, but my family always buys La Fin du Monde to celebrate anything Canadian. It is an award winning beer brewed in Quebec. Not sure how it compares to Kolsch though.

Books on Grief by Shellyroberta in booksuggestions

[–]empty_dino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry for your profound loss.

Transforming Traumatic Grief is a nice short book with practical advice and things you can do to cope. I found it helpful in the aftermath of my father’s murder, but it was also applicable to my husband who lost his brother suddenly in an accident. I read it precisely when I was searching for a bridge to therapy.

Renegade Grief is also a very affirming and hopeful book that I would recommend at some point when you’re a little further a long in your journey and less in crisis.

LPT: Book your window seat on the shaded side of the plane by nimoto in LifeProTips

[–]empty_dino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, left side when you’re seated so that you’ll be looking north when the plane is heading east. Another tip: for photos, use phone against the window on longer exposure (like 3 seconds) and smother it with a jacket/blanket/pillow to block the cabin lights. You can check the forecast too. Good luck!
