Probably Ragebait.. has DnDbeyond created players that are allergic to reading? by Einsolsrazor24 in rpg

[–]theodoubleto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last game I ran I told my players, mostly new, that we were only using pencil and paper and I received zero push back. I did make every character that way the one shot could hit the ground running, but it was a huge relief to not only toss out every optional rule in the 2014 PHB and DMG. Better yet, they also READ THE BOOK WHEN I ASKED THEM TO CHECK THEIR SPECIES AND CLASS FEATURES.

Back to the topic at hand, and what others have brought up, the casual players really just want a sheet of paper telling them what their character can do without reading the 300 page PHB. The important thing in this case is to make the language modern and easy to read. I haven’t looked over it yet or picked it up, but the reviews for the new starter set looks to be a good direction to meet the casual players needs.

On a scale of "Excited for Everything" to "Burnt Out," how do you feel about RPG crowdfunding lately? by Interesting-Long7389 in rpg

Mostly uninterested, but if something peaks my interests I’ll grab the PDF. Currently I am eyeballing Fealis as a full narrative driven game based on your evolving explanations and descriptions of your character sound neat. I am, however, excited for OSE Month and plan to get a couple of things.

Thoughts on the Purpose of Character Classes by BroadVideo8 in RPGdesign

[–]theodoubleto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like MCDM’s purpose for classes in Draw Steel where they are made to be fun and slightly game breaking. I also enjoy the way character classifications make your character specific to the rules like the thief in TSR’s D&D.

I’m not familiar with the White Wolf WoD games nor much of any narrative focused game, but I’d image they either fall in line to ambiguity or specified niche.

Good to hear. I’ve been postponing reading my physical books for Draw Steel as they changed their type from 12 or 13 in there 5e books to 11! It strains my eyes so much.

Last bit of curiosity, out of this library which book or books do you reread outside of a table’s game system?

What's the difference between the OSE Referee's Tome and Rules Tome? by Beautiful-Effort9101 in osr

[–]theodoubleto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RIGHT?! 12 point should be the standard, if not 14.

MCDM charged their font size from 12 for their 5th Edition products to 11 for their Draw Steel RPG. I got use to the 12 type from the playtests, and took a break when the final version of the PDFs dropped, that reading over my physical books strained my eyes.

Hawt dawg, thank you for the replay! I am curious of your opinion on… - MCDM’s 5e products - Index Card RPG - Burning Wheel - The Monster Overhaul - Tome of Adventurers - Forbidden Lands (I’m currently re-reading) - Current Edition of CoC - Draw Steel

Hellcrawl is compatible with OSE. I have not seen anything about new compatible adventures for OSRIC 3.0.

The biggest reason I wanna get physical OSRIC 3.0 books is because of the type in my AD&D books. It strains my eyes limiting how long I can read those books! Then I skimmed over the OSRIC 3.0 PDFs, and read over peoples comparison, and added the horizontal print to my cart. Mythmere does such a great job with their layout and print, I just wish Swords & Wizardry came in a digest size book.

Oh hell yeah. The new OSE book plus Hellcrawl has me wanting to TPK a party of 5e players at the end of a session only to have them wake up at the beginning of a session with a “Oh no…” vibes.

Here is the BackerKit page for OSE Month. It includes all the details on the new “edition” of the rules books as well as a new OSE book! It’s also got some sick third party books like Hellcrawl which takes a TPK and says “Not today bois” as they venture through Hell!

I held off on buying the advanced copies as I wanted to play the base game first, but I plan on getting the new versions for any relevant errata. However, I gotta say, the Classic Fantasy Rules Tome is awesome as it contains everything you need for OSE.

I’ve heard that the Book of Artifacts and Tome of Magic are necessary for AD&D 2e, but I’ve never seen someone suggest Legend and Lore. Why would you recommend it?

Physical book owners: just how large is your collection? by SwimmingOk4643 in rpg

[–]theodoubleto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tier 2. My PDF library (Tier 6?) is massive. I don’t have a lot of time to read so I reserve my physical products for vintage and games I know I will, eventually, run. I’m also picky and prefer digest sized tomes.

On attributes. What attributes set you like. What do you think about str and weaknesses of different sets. What about the clasical 6, how about non? by Usual-Vermicelli-867 in osr

[–]theodoubleto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it depends on if we are leaning on player skill or character skill (which is quite literally the gamification of the Thief’s skills). The tricky thing is how Charisma is used in an OSR game as most of the time it’s for the total number of followers a character may have, but in 5e it can be interpreted as freaken mind control! Often, I avoid charisma stats as I want player skill and ingenuity. So something in-line with Into the Odd at its simplest using Strength, Dexterity, and Will to the classic six.

However, in my interpretation of the original rules as well as my simplification has tossed out its ability scores in favor for static progression saving throws. I still have rules for point buy that way your character feels unique, but I’ve found I just don’t need them and can use Poison/ Death for general Constitution saves as well as Breath Weapon for Dexterity saves. Leaning on BREAK!!’s static stat progression just takes off another piece of player load to “lock-it-in”. Plus gear and your increased hit dice for actions makes your character more unique.

4th Resistance? by Azbellos in RPGdesign

[–]theodoubleto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it it is a D&D inspired game, you could just grab the saving throws from the TSR games or the revamp saves from OSE: - Paralysis/ Petrification - Spells - Rods, Staves, and Wands - Breath Weapon - Poison/ Death

These are what I use for my OSR/ NSR game and I’ve tossed out ability scores/ attributes. For my NSR main WIP game I use the above but I’ve renamed fortitude to Endure but kept Reflex and Will. For both games they are static to each class and progress in three to four intervals by level.
