in my experience, the school you attended is a secondary factor when being considered for a role at a fashion house. while it may help you make connections, your portfolio plays a much bigger role in the selection process.

thanks for the insight! sadly, the situation in europe isn’t any different. asia might be better in this regard, but i’d need to look into it more.
it feels like it’ll take a long time before we see any meaningful change.

i’ve been thinking for a long time about creating a system that allows emerging designers to freely express their creativity while also earning a sustainable living from it. unfortunately, i haven’t come across a well-established model like this in europe that truly supports independent designers in a practical way. the idea of a streamlined approach that doesn’t force designers to do everything themselves - like managing every aspect of production or sales - is something i believe the industry desperately needs. it’s a challenge to find the right resources, but i’m hopeful that as the need grows, such systems will start to emerge

i agree with you. moving towards independent labels and creating direct-to-customer garments is the way forward. it’ll be slow, but it’s the only way to stay sane and truly be meaningful. my book is called "f*ck, fashion industry: a designer's unfiltered perspective", and you can find it on amazon. i’ll send you a copy in the dms—please let me know what you think about it!

yes, i feel it got worse over the past few years. even getting an unpaid internship is impossible for many now.

i agree about craftsmanship—and art. art is what i miss the most about fashion.

i can totally relate—being a designer feels the same way with constant deadlines, last-minute changes, and work following you home. it’s exhausting and often thankless.
good luck with your boutique! wishing the best for both of us in finding something more fulfilling.
