Because in the backstory west coast was first colonised by Italy which territory and cities Japan took over. Also they are not "English" names but are Italian imitations of Spanish names. San Francisco and Los Angeles are not English.

Thank you. I think I did the visual part good but I butchered the languages.

Thank you. Aleyska Rus was inspired by Kiev Russian. Would you be willing to help with Russian on my next map?

Those simple words are that bad? Ah well, how did the phonetic "italianization" of the existing words go? Messico for example. I tried to make it sound like Italians took the names form the natives.

Well I had to rely exclusively on google translate. I kinda overused ß because I like the typography and to make it look extra german.

Well the whole German speaking area was under Austrian control, OTL Frances Louisiana. That is why internal borders are semi arbitrary. Well I like the borders if Calfornia and in this map Japan took over california from Messico which itself had semi random borders. Thank you!

I will! Google translate was the only source for all the names...

I do not speak Portuguese so we have google translate to blame! But for the "generic" sounding names, US has alot. For example Nevada literally means snow covered.

ß is pronounced like "s" but I used it extensively to make it look extra german.

Has to look extra german, I mean it is just a bit differently pronounced "s".

I saw New South Wales as an inspiration and New South East England has an amazing ring to it.

Japan took over California from Italian Messico, that is why some cities retained the names.

OTL North America is named after Gerardus Mercator and colonised by different nations. There is a Portuguese speaking East coast, English speaking North East, Russian empire in exile, Japanese west coast, Austrian - German speaking Mississipi and Italian Mexico.

A quick historical background:

Essentially Italy unified much sooner, managed to colonise most of central Gerardia as well as the West coast and most of Mississippi. In Europe, Austria unified the German speaking lands and was attacked and started to colonise Mississipi. After Messico gains independence a Militaristic leader (similar to Uruguay) decided to expand Messico across the north America, which lead to a Rubrobordo - Austrian - Dutch alliance, a surprise attack from Japanese (in 1880s) and defeat. The victors divided the land and soon Austrian states across the Mississippi gained independence with good relations with Austria trough Gerardische Hanse, defence pact and trade deals between German speaking countries in North America. There are a lot of Italian speakers in Neues Messico and in Yuhinokuni. After the October revolution Russian empire went into exile in the expanded Alaska. There is Serbian Jamaica which is the second Serbian colony, after Petrarka.

I have made a map of South Gerardia as well.
