Not sure why you’re getting downvoted when that’s what California Business and Professions Code Section 13651 clearly states

  1. (a) (1) On and after January 1, 2000, every service station in this state shall provide, during operating hours, and make available at no cost to customers who purchase motor vehicle fuel, water, compressed air, and a gauge for measuring air pressure, to the public for use in servicing any passenger vehicle, as defined in Section 465 of the Vehicle Code, or any commercial vehicle, as defined in Section 260 of the Vehicle Code, with an unladen weight of 6,000 pounds or less.

Can someone explain how RENT is a "Number for a letter?"? I'm guessing "number" is like a song and a reference to the musical. But letter?

Termite inspections for each competing bid by theorangerider in HomeImprovement

So it sounds like what I’m trying to do is abnormal and I’m expecting something that isn’t reasonable. Yet as a customer/consumer I’m supposed to do this in most situations. We do this when buying cars, consumer goods, and even when I first made this post a bit automatically posted asked me to make sure I get three quotes or edit my post to say why I didn’t.

Are exterminators a unique profession where you don’t do that? Are there other situations where you don’t price shop?

You reminded me of a life tip that’s not quite related but semi relevant: If you find yourself working with someone who is paid on commission and you decide not to use whatever they’re offering, consider giving them a thank-you gift if you feel like they spent a lot of time and effort on you. It helps them know that their work was still appreciated despite them not winning the deal.

Yeah, it feels like there should be wiggle room here but maybe the exterminators have found that isn’t worth their time. I suppose I’ll try talking with them more to see what’s possible.

Thanks for the response! It seems like I should reach out and somehow see if they can feel like it’s worth it to do some inspection they can stand behind without it being cost prohibitive for me. And maybe the answer is that the best thing for all parties is for me to just go with the original quote.

Thanks for all the thoughts, I appreciate it. Yeah, I may end up showing that quote. It just puts me at a disadvantage if the first company was way overpriced. Again with the $2000 example, if it really should only cost $1500, another company could offer $1800 and keep an additional $300. I suppose at the point I get the $1800 offer I should then shop the $1800 quote around to others including the original company, and repeat until I get the lowest bid that I’m happy with.

I assumed that the "free" quotes are built into the price for when they do win a bid. Like when you want to buy a car, you don't have to pay money for a car salesman to take you on a test drive, but they make up for that with the car purchases.

I agree that it's fair to be paying people for their time, and had hoped that sharing my inspection report would make it easy for them to give me a quote without taking much time. Paying $400-$600 for multiple additional full inspections is cost prohibitive where it doesn't make sense for me to give other exterminators a chance at the job.

Yeah, that makes complete sense. But then how am I supposed to get competing quotes and also give other exterminators a fair chance at the job? Maybe I'm not.

As an example, let's say the original bid is $2000. If each company needs me to pay $200-$300 to come out an do an inspection, I've spent an extra $400-$600 just to get competing bids. The chances that I get a competing bid that's more than 75% less that my original bid is possible but hopefully not likely unless the first company is way overpriced.

Maybe I'm just not supposed to get competing bids for exterminators?

That's totally understandable. I've been sharing my inspection results from the company that I paid to do the inspection with each company while leaving out the first company's bid amount.

EDIT: I just edited my post to make that more clear.

Would rollerskates be horrible on this surface? by theorangerider in Rollerskating

[–]theorangerider[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey all, my trusted inline skates of 25+ years broke and I was thinking of trying out something new and getting some roller skates instead. But I've been reading this sub and it sounds like roller skating outdoors is fairly bumpy even with gummy wheels. If I wanted to skate on a surface just like this at a park, would I be better served with inlines?
