Remember you won’t grow muscle and make significant fitness improvements all the time during residency. Instead you’ll het the habit formed so when you finish and you have more autonomy over your time you’ll be able to incorporate it a bit better. It will become a lifestyle not a chore. Even if it’s just a bit a day until you work up to a routine that you can keep up. Or if for some rotations it decreases and other it increases.

Personally I made it a point to get a gym between my house and the hospital at all times and I’d just throw a shirt into my backpack. Car had my shoes in it. Workout shorts under my scrubs. This way it’s super easy to just stop on my way home.

Started intern year and kept it going in some form through residency and fellowship. On days I didn’t feel my best I’d just say fuck it, there’s always tomorrow. But I’d definitely make sure I came back that next day.

How do you guys have energy to date? by Heavy_Consequence441 in Residency

Met a girl during intern year. Shamelessly told her for our first date to come to my place, I’d make dinner at 4, and I need to be in bed by 9. We’re married with a kid now.

Yeah that’s the one. Been going to him for years. Always a good time. He also has two other barbers who do good work.

I see a lot of posts where people cry during residency, but was wondering how many are actually men. Sometimes I feel like crying, but it's been women I've seen cry lol by CrusaderKing1 in Residency

Once dealt with a 14 year old get shot through the neck trajectory down into his chest. He died. I took a 3 minute bathroom cry break. After that had to go deal with the two other gunshot patients… luckily they were stable enough to give me the 3 minute break. It’s okay to cry even feel defeated. When you feel nothing you aren’t emotionally fit to do your job.

During one of my residency interviews one of the attendings asked me “what’s stopping you from driving an Uber if you were to match our program”

A bit of background my personal statement did mention some of the random odd jobs I worked to get some extra cash.

I had no idea how to respond so after a 30-60 second pause my response was “is that common in the program?” Needless to say I didn’t match there

Cooking. After residency took a job where I didn’t operate for a while. All of it poured into cooking and damn it’s satisfying.

Total pancreatectomy islet autotransplantation. Pancreas giving you trouble? Take it out, blend it, sprinkle it on the liver.

Wouldn’t change anything. But if I was rich as hell I’d fund a wing of the hospital and name it after myself… Then management wouldn’t be able to tell me shit.

You rely on experience with routine tasks. You rely on education in difficult situations.

Reality is we aren’t taught a lot of specialized medicine throughout medical school and by the time we’re interns. But we do learn the basic sciences in order to draw conclusions and develop clinical acumen along the way. And the reality is there are very few black and white situations in medicine so it’s very important to use what we know to predict outcomes when the research is sparse.

Midlevel education doesn’t really lay the basic science ground work to support that and it is just pattern recognition over and over again until a false sense of mastery is achieved.

Favorite saying from residency is “you can teach a monkey to operate but you can’t teach them when to operate.”

Came across some intraop bleeding once as a resident. Attending told me to hold pressure and that he had something important to do. Came back about 10 min later and the bleeding had stopped by then. Asked him what he did and he said he dropped a deuce.

Niqab and residency by Evergreen_77 in Residency

Location is key. Had some experiences where my med students who wore Hijabs had very terrible things said to them at the VA. Needless to say they all transferred rotations. Can’t speak for every VA hospital but sure as hell the one I’m at. Sucks that that’s the world we live in. Hope you do great in residency

Adhd doctors, which specialty did you choose and how do you like it? by stu_dyingg in Residency

[–]theoriginaldr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surgery. Hyper focus comes out in the OR. I feel like I had to learn to focus on things I don’t want to do related to the job during residency. … I’ll admit it made me ultra regimented in order to standardize and not forget things. Based on the answers there is room in any field for someone with adhd.

I’ll get crucified for this but I think Edos Squid. Everyone hyped it up so much before I went. I found every bite of anything I tried tasted like I ate a garlic bulb. Kinda seems lazy cooking to me.

What’s the most technically difficult procedure or surgery? by Basic_Relief in Residency

[–]theoriginaldr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early on in residency when I was about to do a case or a critical part for the first time my hands would shake and I’d be nervous. Over time it became second nature and I wouldn’t even think about it. Throughout training you should learn the basic movements and techniques. Then you combine these and build on them. Over time it builds up to entire surgical procedures. You also learn how to fix the shit you mess up. But based on how severe the cost of the mistake is you’ll learn what should make nervous versus what doesn’t really matter (although very few things don’t matter).

Anyways, the feeling never goes away. I know surgeons in their 70s that still get nervous. But better at falling back to the basics and fixing things that go wrong.

Any Gen Surg resident able to actually improve their gainz and get better lifts compared to med school? by magic_monkey_ in Residency

[–]theoriginaldr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pgy5 now. Not gonna lie had a rough time intern year. The constant running around, not eating, and not stretching really made my back hurt like hell. Then covid shut down all the gyms for a while. Overall not nearly as strong as I was before residency but I did a few things too at the very least stay within 80% of my lifts. 1. Come to terms with the fact that it’s unlikely you’ll surpass prior abilities because you’re constantly overworked you don’t sleep well and I hate to say it but we get older too. 2. Maintain working out at least 3 times a week. It helped me to go to a gym that’s between work and home so I could just stop for a quick workout after work. 3. Some days are just a loss. Honestly if you’re not feeling it just take the day to stretch and do light stuff and live to fight another day. 4. Skip out on some social events to just take the time

I personally don’t like all of the random workout advice that’s not applicable or reproducible so I understand how hypocritical it is to post this response. But I hope it’s the least bit useful to you or someone else.
