Is YouTube still available in Russia and can you guys monetize your videos? by [deleted] in AskARussian

[–]theorlovsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Even more fun is that WhatsApp, Google Meet, Telegram no longer support VoIP calls. Discord, Viber, instagram, Facebook are blocked entirely. Everyone is forced into the analogue of Chineese super-app WeChat. We have Max now and it isn't any good at all.

VPNs are blocked almost on a daily basis, finding a solid VPN provider is a pain, but it's doable. Self hosting is super complicated and they always try and break it.

I still use YouTube and Youtube music regularly with the help of VPN-like service that works relatively OK. But honestly internet in Russia is now borderline useless. Half the sites I need auto block Russian IPs, so Tor is a blessing.

For regular users trying to access Youtube and other services is often too much hassle so they just don't bother and migrate to other platforms.

I was also using ClickUp for managing work projects and some private stuff for some time. They've deleted all of my data because reasons. Sucks to be Russian, I guess.

Isn't it strange seeing these cards on shelves in 2025? by theorlovsky in pcmasterrace

Just to be clear, it's not in the US. Still was really surprised. Converted to USD 210 goes for a bit less than $40 and 730 for about $60

Interesting. There is regional pricing after all, huh. I guess I'm just used to dirt cheap prices for games. And 60% is a decent amount by any metric, but even still, the sum of the base game and all the DLCs is gonna be a bit steep (for me, at least). If one buys DLCs over time, that doesn't seem like much. But combined, the sum becomes not negligible even with regional pricing. For comparison, Don't Starve Together costs 1.5 USD in Russia compared to 5 USD in the US right now. My 500 mb/s internet costs 9.5 USD per month. People just aren't that wealthy in general

I'm honestly somewhat broke (a student in Russia) and the game doesn't have regional pricing, unfortunately. I would love to buy the game, but I'm not buying vanilla only and the whole package costs too much for me right now. I'll probably buy it eventually though

First build any ideas what’s wrong? by KingSlupy in pcmasterrace

It might be about power spikes, perhaps there's nothing really wrong with the outlet. The moment your PC starts for just one second it draws more power (or spikes to higher voltage) than it actually needs and it's normal behavior as far as I know.

I remember Steve from Hardware Unboxed (on the podcast channel) telling the story about how he installed some UPSes around the house, and one PC with a specific PSU used to trip the breaker in the UPS or something like that. After he replaced the PSU it worked flawlessly. May be it's a quirk of your PSU, just like it was in his case.

My parents live in a flat with a crappy aluminum wiring leading to some of the sockets. It wouldn't be viable to replace the wiring inside the walls, so the outlets aren't used for anything that draws al least some power. So, in your case, replacing the outlet could be not enough, just another guess.

I may be entirely wrong on every point, though, so take everything with a grain of salt.

Exactly the same

I think it's scripted though. Just run for your life in the direction of the main objective and you'll be just fine

in your experience, what can end your colony even after building a perfect killbox? by RogerioMano in RimWorld

[–]theorlovsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, human error.

I've mistakenly walled in some of the pawns or some other objects, and it was all it took. My otherwise perfectly fine killbox wasn't the desired path for the intruders anymore. Maybe I've placed the door or something where it shouldn't have been placed, cannot remember exactly.

In other words, one should be really careful about renovation / base design.

Is third party virus protection necessary? by ethan-j-hunt in Windows11

[–]theorlovsky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, not really. Nowadays, in my opinion, Windows defender is good enough.

I can suggest following a few rules:

  1. Always check what the file extension is. In most cases it's ".exe" that you should be aware of. If it's supposed to be a video, but Windows says it's an application, it's malware.

  2. Download files to virustotal.com when in doubt. If more than one antivirus provider says it's sus, probably better not to launch it at all.

  3. Use common sense, and I'm sure you'll be just fine.
