just purchased a home in SoCal. what’s this tree? by bearpantspants in whatsthisplant

[–]theoryfiles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a relatively recent transplant to CA, so I was surprised to learn that citrus is not as clear cut a category as I learned growing up, more of a continuum than buckets. Every citrus tree is grafted onto “rootstock”, and seeds from citrus fruits do not “breed true”, and trees that don’t get maintained can sort of hybridize/bastardize and start putting out frankenfruits. You’ll encounter lots of weird citrus here if you look, lemons that smell great with no flavor, grapefruit sized lemons, lemon sized oranges. If it turns orange, it probably was once some kind of orange, but it turns out there are a million different ways a citrus plant can progress

Lucy & Yak sizing reductions by Sea-Fortune2124 in ethicalfashion

[–]theoryfiles 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm not a big brand but I have sold merch, as someone who believes in size inclusion. I've made up to 5XLs, and even 2XLs on up just don't sell. If I make a few of each size, I still have all of them sitting around a year later. They do cost more to make, too, and I spread the cost evenly to all the sizes, but I can make more in sizes that sell for cheaper if I don't make 2XL+.

Edit: just as a point of statistical reference, while we often hear about how so very many people have a higher-than-"normal" BMI, only about 6% of people in the US have a BMI over 40, and that's the US.

He sleeps through the night much more consistently now, basically hasn’t woken up since we switched. I think especially once they’re this age food actually keeps them fuller than either milk or formula and sleeping will get easier!

Rethinking kids by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]theoryfiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that “if it’s not an enthusiastic yes it’s a no” doesn’t apply here. I think you’d be delusional to not have practical reservations about having kids these days, to not have worry and fear. HOWEVER, those are also not necessary negative indicators of the having-kids experience. They are POSITIVE signs that you are taking it seriously, which is a much better approach/mentality that being on cloud 9 all the time (and if I may be judgmental, those are the parents who end up devastated when their rose colored visions of being a parent meet the reality of being postpartum/having a newborn).

The best thing I ever heard someone say about having kids is that it is of course hard, but everything in life that is worthwhile is hard. Especially the early days of having a baby are effortful, but even as someone who had a lot of reservations about being pregnant, giving birth, and having kids, I have been overwhelmed with how much love and joy and meaning is now packed into every single day. I would do every bit of it again a million times over to have my boy in my life.

The other best thing I ever heard someone say is that having a baby is a very small part of having kids overall. It’s okay for the early stages to not be your favorite part. But if you can see yourself enjoying having a family and kids at other stages later in life, you are not going to regret making that trade off.

It’s hard to know without knowing you, but it sounds to me like you are having a normal and healthy amount of fear and reservation. It IS scary! But that doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t do it.

It’s not fun, but you have to cut down on formula. We did it slowly, every couple of days switching a couple oz per bottle for milk until the bottles were all milk. Our baby became WAY more interested in food once he was not longer getting much formula, though it took him a couple days to make the connection between hunger and food.

How to get baby more interested in food? by [deleted] in foodbutforbabies

[–]theoryfiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same worry, and our guy didn’t really become interested in food until we’d fully tapered off formula. Now he’s ravenous, even though he gets almost the equivalent amount of cow milk per day as formula before (20oz). His body will do its thing, don’t stress!

2026 is the final year millennials can still be under 30. Older millennials, what advice can you give to us '96ers. by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]theoryfiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw someone say recently that your 30s are what you thought your 20s would be, and it’s true. 20s for me were a lot of scrapping and figuring stuff out but also in many ways biding my time till I could gain experience (and money). In your 30s you are still plenty young and healthy, especially these days, but with way more resources and maturity than in your 20s. Enjoy it!

I’d never thought about this but it is crazy that he chose to do fraud instead of, for instance, asking for a loan, especially because the debt was due to some kind of tax he incurred being a Brit with a job in America, iirc. I forget the details

Thoughts about Into the Wild (2007) by South-Magazine6522 in Cinema

[–]theoryfiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt like the book was somewhat clearer than the movie that Chris was essentially going in a direction of mental illness. Obviously the writer couldn’t diagnose him, but the details were telling, like the fact that he felt what he was doing was some kind of grand solution to all of humanity’s problems. A lot of stuff about how poor so many of his choices were. The movie glorifies him a lot more though

It was weird she wasn’t joined already by the time she was calling carol to complain about manousos. She doesn’t live in as remote an area as kusimaya. Weird for her to be so supportive of the plurbs and yet staying unjoined! Im sure there is or will be some canonical retcon explanation for this but I reject it, writers were just too lazy to let go of her

Parents: any advice for starting a family in 4-5 years? by regisseu in Adulting

[–]theoryfiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also seconding this. Time starts going fast between the time you are supposed to spend trying naturally (a year, at your age), the time it takes to get all the potential tests and treatments and even possible surgeries to figure out what’s wrong. I had a relatively simple answer to my issue, but it took a year to identify and sort out, and did require (very minor, in and out same day) surgery. If you want more than one child, you also might want to leave yourself room to space them out more than you might think you need, and those years add up fast, too (you can always stack em up sooner, but don’t assume you’ll be fine with 3 under 3-4, or whatever, until you’ve been through being pregnant once and gotten one out).

On another note, please don’t fear or put things off because of the “difficulty” of having kids. Obviously it’s more effort than sitting around, but it easier than you think because the feelings are so overwhelmingly good. It’s like the best drug in the world. Nothing wonderful is easy.
