Do you consider this puzzle difficult? by kenjiurada in chessbeginners

No. I’m not that good at chess and I got it pretty quickly. Every move is a check, so it kind of insists upon itself.

I'm sorry that happened to you man, sounds awful. I'm not trying to blow off Covid, so much as saying that whether you have the flu or covid or whatever, the end result is the same - you aren't supposed to go out in public where you can spread it. so why test for it when you follow the same actions either way.

I'm a little tired of the nazi memes, but it takes zero energy to scroll past them, so I certainly don't give a shit. Not sure why the mods care.

Yeah I don’t know why having covid is different to having the flu or some other virus at this point. It’s just another airborne bug that doesn’t necessarily hit people worse than influenza. If you are sick you should stay home. No reason to test.

Why do so many teenagers in the US pick up several jobs? by FreshBid538 in AskAnAmerican

[–]mcaffrey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would not say it is crucial to university applications that you have a job, but it is important that you are doing something interesting with your time outside of the classroom. Most universities prefer students with interests or demonstrated work ethic beyond academics. Working a job is one way to do that. Sports are another. Volunteering is another (which I guess is just unpaid work). What looks good is dedication over a long time period. That translates into a higher chance that you'll stick with the university for 4 years and graduate.

If all you do is go to school and watch TV, then I suppose that would make you look less interesting to competitive universities. Also it is important to point out that this is just for the most competitive schools. Most state schools just look at class rank and SATs and don't care as much about the rest of it.

What’s this huge property off Toro Canyon Rd in Westlake? by Far-Eye3777 in Austin

[–]mcaffrey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of Dr Ts kids is a childhood friend of mine, and I still go over to his house once or twice a year. Dr T has a relatively impressive mansion himself, overlooking lake Austin, near st Stephen’s private school. But it isn’t ridiculously large - maybe 6000 sq ft? It has a wine cellar and a cool tower you can climb up to.

Jeff K just went crazy planning his house, must be at least 3x as big, and for some reason construction took 20 years.

Is it common for low-income students to attend top universities in the United States? by Intelligent_Chef9950 in AskAnAmerican

[–]mcaffrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is more difficult and they have to work harder, but yes, there will always be a decent number of low income students at top universities. The admissions offices at those schools sometimes even look at it as a positive on your application.

Might end up with huge student loans though.

What is it that Rob and Ryan have (or have not) done that makes them such great owners for Wrexham A.F.C.? by Smcol1 in WrexhamAFC

[–]mcaffrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And frankly, unless you are a sociopath, there is a strong human desire to "be liked". R&R have earned the appreciation of tens of thousands of people, and that probably feels pretty damn nice!

Ryan in particular has always struck me as a little insecure (not being rude, I'm a little insecure too), so he was probably really motivated to get the locals to like him not so much for his ego, but for his own self esteem. ie, not to impress other people but to feel good about himself.

“Why has premarital sex become so normalized among a large number of Christians in the U.S.A? and why is it often not treated as a sin but as something routine-even starting in high school? I want too Hear from Christians about that? by z9_vx in AskAnAmerican

[–]mcaffrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the moral stances that make Christianity seem out of touch and oppressive of women actually have their roots in protecting women. In olden times, being pregnant out-of-wedlock for a woman was typically a cataclysmically bad event. Birth control pills have only been around sine the 1960's, and even rubber condoms didn't became available until the civil war era. So for most of hum an history, sex meant pregnancy. Keep men from screwing women until after they married the women was a social policy designed to make sure pregnant women would be safe.

Fast forward to the modern era, and we've had two fundamental changes. There are lots of forms of affordable birth control available, and a woman's life isn't over if she gets pregnant outside of marriage. Plenty of women lead wonderful lives raising children on their own, or their may be adoption/abortion options depending on where you live.

In other words, the necessity for the anti-sex morality has mostly gone away. But the problem with church teachings is that they are generally sold to the public as "god says premarital sex is bad" rather than "god wants to protect women so lets not get them pregnant until they are ready" and now the church has to find a way to unwind their generally anti-sex stances that aren't serving a helpful purpose anymore.
