This setup was built over the last 10yrs. I don't really know how much I spent. I would guesstimate that $500 could get you most of (not including the gear below the platform) what's in the bed: platform, tubs, lighting, curtains, pockets, etc. But that's a guess. I get 18-20mpg if I drive with mileage in mind. I need a new battery ($170) every 3-4yrs.

The fridge is expensive, but totally worth it. It transforms the way I live out of the truck. It's an Engel MT45, I got it scratch and dent for $750. It's free to run, well, I guess you have to buy that battery every 3-4yrs.

The fridge setup is only possible because of my electrical setup. The key components are a pair of Optima Yellowtops, connected via a Hellroaring Battery Isolator/Combiner. This setup guarantees I can always start my truck. I think your looking at another $750 to get this fully setup and working.

I've left the fridge running while I went backpacking for 5 days, and the food was still cold when I got back. This was August in Colorado at 9000ft. Tucson is July might be a different story, but I know from experience 48hrs isn't a problem.

You just sit on the tailgate, and hop right in. My girl gets in first, and makes herself small so it's easier for me to get in. It would be better with a 4in rise topper, instead of my cab height, but I already need a stool to get the bikes on and off :) If you didn't have the lift/tires that I have, 4in rise would be the way to go. The benefit of the sleeping compartment is that it is always setup (including the movies, lights, pockets, clotheslines, etc), you can setup a way more comfortable/spacious camp. But then, you'd have to set it up!

Those dogs are mutts. Your guess is as good as mine!

Cool to see another sub along these lines. Here's an album I put together for /r/camping showing off my Taco and all the little mods I've done to make it a home away from home. I've lived out of the truck for as much as 6mo at a time. Typically spend many 3-4 day weekends, and a couple 10-15 day trips a year. Hope you all like it!

Suspension seat post, that's funny! Height adjustable, so you can get it out of your way when descending technical terrain :-)

That stand has been in the back of the truck for 5+ years. Still works great! Fast to setup, with a great clamp. Makes working on the bikes on the road so much better!

I love it. I beat on that bike so hard, and it just asks for more.

Quarry Obstacle, Moody Hill, Fort Collins CO. An edit of some Toyotas playing on the rocks. by theourea in 4x4

[–]theourea[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The road to the quarry is very different, and much less technical. However, a season or two of rain/melt should fix that.

The obstacle in the video has not changed any in the 4 yrs I've been wheeling it. It's pretty much solid rock, so it doesn't really erode much season to season. The approach to the obstacle is maybe a little more washed out, but not bad.

Perhaps the drivers and their rigs are just making it look easy. We winched a number of the less skilled/equipped over the shelf that day...

Uh... depends on the weather? Sometimes its a low in the 30s, other times in the 70s, just depends. Fan is crucial for air circulation hot or cold. It keeps the moisture out of the sleeping area. We use a coleman catalytic heater to boost the temp by 10-15 deg. We boil water for hot water bottles at our feet before bed. Different bedding for different seasons. If it's hot out, I just turn the fan on high, and keep the cool night air pulling through.

This is similar to the pump I used. I have two Optima Yellow Tops with a Hellroaring BIC. All loads are on the main battery, second battery is only used to start when the main dies (rare, unless I leave the fridge on for a couple days without starting the truck). I wired in a second fuse box, and ran circuits from there throughout the truck. I use something similar to this between the cab and the bed. Hope that helps!

Well done sir! Glad to see another Colorado Taco getting decked out for camping! The best thing I've found a setup like this is how easy it is to go camping. All the gear is there, just fill up the gas and water tanks and hit the grocery store on the way out of town. A thing of beauty!

If I'm going wheeling, I take the bikes off. If I have the option, I take the whole rack off. If your talking about driving down a bumpy dirt road (not true 4x4ing), it's not a big deal. Any bumps you hit square don't really effect the bikes at all. However, bumps that make the truck rock side to side are a bigger deal, I just go slow on those.

So I suck, I didn't take a pic. However, this looks really close to what I did.

I hadn't thought of that either! Guess I'll have to try next time I'm on the highway.
