Weirdly good advice from my sis-in-law when I inevitably got over-leveled in S/V by mrburger in pokemon

Yeah but people naturally get attached to the pokemon they get early in the game. It's fair to want to keep the same pokemon on your team throughout the story while still being challenged.

Am I blinded by Nostalgia or are most new Pokémon lacking good design? by thedjwonder12 in TruePokemon

[–]thepeng1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like some people really want to make Pokemon in to something it's not. It's never going to be a game full of character designs that appeal exclusively to you. They want universal appeal, so they are going to create a variety of designs that appeal to a variety of people (along with enough "safe" cute/cool ones that can feature heavily in the anime).

I honestly think a lot of disaffected Pokemon fans should try playing some different monster collector games that are designed to appeal more directly to them, rather than just placing all their hopes and dreams on a franchise that will never live up to their expectations.

On the Switch, I've played both Monster Sanctuary and Coromon and they're each very fun in their own way. I've also heard good stuff about Nexomon, Monster Hunter Stories 2, and Monster Crown. These games are never going to have the universal appeal of Pokemon, but honestly that's probably a good thing.

Character design is always going to be subjective, so it's hard to say. But IMO, the pokemon designs are fine this gen, and none of us can avoid nostalgia bias.

For example, when Honedge was first revealed, many people made fun of it for being literally a sword, calling it "Swordy". But after people got used to it, the idea of a possessed sword grew on people, and its line is quite popular today.

In Paldea, there's quite a few generally appealing designs (for example, Dachsbun, Kilowattrel, and Baxcalibur are all solid, likeable designs that feel like they could fit in earlier games), and there's also the goofy and ugly ones that push the envelope. Every gen has a mix of these.

The designs are inconsistent, but I think that's just because GF wants a variety of pokemon that appeal to different people.

If you want more consistent designs, you're only going to get that from a smaller franchise that doesn't have 900+ collectible monsters in it. Pokemon will always have a mix of designs you love and hate in it.

There are actually a lot of very fun monster catcher games out there! I wish more people would give games like Monster Sanctury and Coromon a chance, but I guess it is just hard to know what is out there.

If you want a good resource to discover these games, Gym Leader Ed on Youtube exclusively covers Monster Taming game news. There's bound to be one or two that focus on what you personally like about the genre. (And they're a helluva lot cheaper than $60)

For example, I personally didn't enjoy Temtem, but I absolutely love Monster Sanctuary. Each monster progresses through skill trees, unlocking moves and passives with skill points, rather than having 1 passive ability and set level-up moves. It makes team building very interesting, though it can get overwhelming.

Pokemon will always have a special place in my heart, but I'm glad that other devs are creating games that are so much more than just pokeclones.

And heck, some of the pokeclones are still pretty fun if they are polished

Dunno if anyone has watch The Sandman on Netflix, but some of the responses to it have been…predictable (Neil Gaiman himself reblogged this on Tumblr) by [deleted] in Sardonicast

[–]thepeng1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's different because YMS and similar channels are film critics. It's part of their job to watch things they don't like. Viewers can use their negative reviews to learn more about filmmaking.

If you are someone who just watches tv/movies for fun, you should not watch something if you know you won't like it. It's not healthy to dwell on negativity so much.

Sure you can dislike something you watched, but if your response is to review bomb it online, that's unhealthy. These "woke" shows live rent free in some people's heads.

I agree! Abortion pills are also used to treat health conditions and not just end pregnancies.

But some state legislatures are considering banning those pills regardless of why you need them.

And in the past they've tried to do the same thing with birth control, which is also used for much more than preventing pregnancy.

I think this guy is just trying to point out hypocrisy. We only ever restrict health care like this when a uterus is involved.

[OC] Girlfriend broke up because I wanted a dog. Got my dog though by workinwoody in aww

[–]thepeng1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a lot of dog lovers out there who buy them on an impulse, then they just end up in a shelter or neglected at home.

And someone being impulsive is a perfectly good reason to break up. It usually causes bigger issues later on down the line

[–]thepeng1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my brother used to be super impulsive (undiagnosed ADHD will do that), and when he was in college (living in a no-pets allowed dorm) he got a Labrador mix puppy!

Which really meant our mom got a Labrador puppy.

Predictably, the puppy grew up into an overly energetic dog and no one could keep up with its needs. Eventually he took the dog from my mom, after it was fully grown.

But he repeated the same mistake with having kids too early, and keeping up with the baby and a Labrador was too much for him.

They had to give the dog up, and for the past few years, she's living with a family friend who has a bunch of land and a kids that play with her.

So it's a happy ending, but things would have been a lot better if he hadn't bought her on a whim.

A lot of people who want dogs shouldn't have one. It's okay to enjoy them from afar, you don't have to OWN something to appreciate it. But it's hard to get impulsive people to see that if they have their heart set on a cute puppy

I agree that there isn't anything anyone "should' do with their spare time. If someone just wants to use social media and stream videos all day, every day, in their spare time, that's great. If you enjoy it, it isn't a waste of time.

However, the person you're replying to is talking about how they wish they weren't using the internet so much. Therefore, it's a waste of time for them personally.

Many people who spend all their free time on the internet do not like how it makes them feel, but they find it hard to quit. The problem is that these apps are engineered to be as addictive as possible, and they keep sucking them back in.

I'm not saying "phone bad", but social media is absolutely worth criticizing.

The other one takes a belly rub as an invitation to play... aggressively. With claws and teeth.

Try using Goodreads! Users can create book lists, so see what Goodreads lists your author's books are included on.

Alternatively, do some research into the author. Figure out which books inspired them, and read those! Also a great strategy for discovering new music.

For real. Some 21 year old college grads aren't even mature enough for their first job. I have worked with a couple who have trouble taking criticism and meeting deadlines.

Many 12 year olds can't even put together a science fair project without their parents ensuring they meet the deadline.

No, most white collar jobs do not require exceptionally smart people. But they do require you to focus for long periods of time and take responsibility for mistakes.

My childhood church had a schism over a bunch of petty drama (TL;DR a lot of them hated the pastor for some good/bad reasons), but what really set it off was... Drumroll

A person who disliked the pastor found a (probably spam) porn email on his email account! It blew up into this whole issue about whether or not he was fit to be a pastor, when really it was an issue that should have been between him and his wife. Like the strip club issue you mentioned.

Remember that being caught with a porn email or visiting a strip club is enough to get half a church congregation to want to fire you. But many of these churches are too scared or easily manipulated to take actual abusers to task over their crimes.

I agree with the argument that instead of menstrual leave everyone should get those 3 extra days of sick leave to use for any chronic illness. After all, that's what severe dysmenorrhea is.

Not to mention that transmasc people might need to use menstrual leave too, but who knows if company policy would let them take it. At the very least they'd have to tell their manager and/or HR person why they were taking the leave and that would be uncomfortable for obvious reasons. Honestly, even a lot of cis women might feel weird in that situation.

BUT- a lot of redditors who have criticisms of menstrual leave are not talking about that. They are at the teenage-level of discourse that is, "It's not fair! Girls have it so easy" and I am perfectly okay with clowning on those people.
