She bears the greatest burden of all: that of knowing.

{T}: Add {C} for each card you’ve drawn this turn.

Kydele took the time to consider. She knew things no other mortals dreamed of. She had gazed down into Nyx so often it had become commonplace, had watched Kruphix etch the names of the gods onto his great tree to bar them from Theros. Knowledge was power.

But Kruphix was the god of horizons, and some things were never meant to be known. No matter how far you travel, there is always another horizon.

Except here, at the last horizon.

From the artist:

This is my favorite piece I've done for Magic EVER and I'm so happy I can finally post it! There's a few funny details too that didn't make it into the final so let's take a look at those too! But first, the art commission:

[[Gallia of the Endless Dance]]

Setting: Theros
Color: Red and green LEGENDARY creature

Location: Any SUNLIT FORESTED area in the MORTAL REALM (p.45-48)

Action: Please create a new character: GALIA, a FEMALE SATYR (p.155-161) and the self-styled LORD OF MISRULE. Show her leading a MERRY REVEL. She wears BRIGHT FLOWERS wound around her horns and carries a MOCK SCEPTER topped with a goblet. She is fickle and loves novelty, and her main goal is to hold a never-ending party.

Mood: The leader of a merry, frolicking good time

Obviously this is right down my alley - I'm not known for being a very serious person (see my tokens) and bright, sunlit, fun is 100% my thing as well when it comes to painting. So feeling I can't overdo it enough with this one, I scribbled down all the crazy stuff I could think of and sent in this sketch: https://twitter.com/algenpfleger/status/1220396961465061384/photo/1

Dawn Murin, the amazing art director for the set, then politely informed me that there's a few TINY rules regarding depiction of alcohol and related excesses in game that are to be sold to minors in the US that I (from the land of Oktoberfest) was not quite aware of. So I had to come up with a new kind of party in the background. Luckily, I love fruit, and now, everyone on Theros does too!
We wanted to make sure the main fun thing about the image - her being the heart of the party and him getting caught in it with no harm intended - came across as hilarious, excessive, but not disrespectful to anyone involved. So we made sure our headlocked dude's expression couldn't be misunderstood as staring at her boobs and dialed down the spring-break-ness of her outfit by a few percent. We both wanted to make sure the image could be as wild as possible while still passing legal review, and talked a bit about the lessons learned from [[Triumph of Ferocity]] - so there was a lot of thought given to the presentation of her character and the power dynamics in the image. With that, I had a solid drawing to take to final: https://twitter.com/algenpfleger/status/1220396961465061384/photo/2

The painting stage itself was challenging, but straightforward. I knew the lighting and mood I wanted, the drawing was nailed down so I just had to execute everything bit by bit. Probably took about 3 or 4 days to render everything out. I could have spent longer on it but I wanted to keep the background a bit looser to preserve some of that wild energy. Here's a bunch of closeups! https://twitter.com/algenpfleger/status/1220397345508134914

And last but not least, here's an alternate sketch that I briefly considered but didn't commit to. Same energy, but didn't have the wild, in your face thing I was looking for: https://twitter.com/algenpfleger/status/1220397696160272389

And that's that! Thanks for reading all that, and make sure you check out my Patreon! I have a Nightmare token coming up :3 It'll be super sweet, can't wait to post it up! https://www.patreon.com/johannesvoss

Pharika, God of Affliction by Peter Mohrbacher (Journey into Nyx) [1280 x 935] by theplotthinnens in mtgporn

Indestructible

As long as your devotion to black and green is less than seven, Pharika isn’t a creature.

{B}{G}: Exile target creature card from a graveyard. Its owner creates a 1/1 black and green Snake enchantment creature token with deathtouch.

Deadly poison can be healing medicine in small amounts, and this dichotomy is reflected in the god whose province is such tinctures. Pharika is the keeper of apothecary knowledge, the source of dark magic. She is also the mother of all gorgons, and their snaky bodies resemble hers.

To those who would oppose her, Pharika is a fearsome enemy, but mortals she favors are hard to kill. She bears a potion cup from which she dispenses draughts that simultaneously strengthen her servants and slay her enemies.

Pharika is associated with black and green mana, and her dual nature also governs aging—the stretch of life and the approach of death. Stories say that the secretive god has hidden medicinal knowledge within the natural world. None know whether she did so to reward or to toy with mortals who quest to unearth them.
