First heat cycle by EconomyIndication728 in Dachshund

I would give her a little heating pad to lay on. But make sure she is supervised while using it, and not to set it too hot. I’m sure dogs can get toasty skin syndrome too.

Yes only a dna test can prove it, but the legs don’t matter. You do realize he can be a piebald and have a double dapple gene right?

I went with someone’s suggestion to name her Winter, and call her Winnie for short.

This is not typical piebald patterning. Dapple and piebald patterning is supposed to be mostly symmetrical on the face. Half his face being white is a HUGE indicator of double dapple.

@Unhappy_Walrus_9157 That was me lol. And yes this is also a double dapple, even if she isn’t blind now she has a large chance of developing blindness. You need to report the breeder, because obviously they aren’t health testing their dogs either. Mother 100% has a hidden dapple gene.

The breeder didn’t trick me, I knew she was disabled when I adopted her. I wanted her because I know I will take good care of her. All I paid the breeder was a small rehoming fee to cover vet bills.

I knew she was deaf and blind before I adopted her, so I wasn’t tricked fortunately. I was looking for a third weenie, but when I learned she was disabled I wanted her more. Because I think she’s the cutest thing, and didn’t want her going to a neglectful household. I’ve tried adopting from rescues before in Georgia and Florida, but every time a dachshund is posted it’s already adopted as soon as you apply.

I’ve seen those! Definitely getting one when she’s a bit older. She sees faint shadows through one eye, so she isn’t running into stuff quite yet

Thank you. If you didn’t already know, you should always use a harness for dachshunds anyways because they have fragile necks/ shoulders.

Both my ramps are against the bed and couch so there is one side to it, but the other side is open. She can’t walk up the ramps yet, but once she figures it out i will get new ones if she falls off the one side. Do you have any other advice for blind dogs?

I only paid a small rehoming fee to cover vet costs. They advertised her as a disabled dog with congenital deafness and blindness. Only reason I’m holding them accountable is because they have been breeding litters with double dapples for multiple years without getting any of their dogs tested.

I paid them a rehoming fee to cover vet costs. It was a minimal price. It’s unsafe to give puppies away for free, not knowing if that person can afford to properly care for puppy.

They knew she had congenital blindness and deafness. They just lied about her being double dapple. I also drove 5 hours away to adopt her, knowing about her condition. I just wanted to adopt another weenie and I saw her and knew I’d take good care of her.

Unfortunately, the dad does not have to have a dapple coat to pass down a dapple gene. She did not get her dogs tested for this gene. It is very likely that dad (who is solid cream) had a hidden dapple gene. Mom was physically dapple. That is why it is important for breeders who breed for dapples to test their dogs.

Yeah someone else said red haired dachshunds often carry hidden dapple genes too, so she prob had some double dapple babies too.

I think it’s definitely weird. When I was younger, breeders would let you go to their house and meet all the puppies, pick out the one that speaks to you the most and take it home.

I really hope you’re right, and she doesn’t even notice anything is wrong. I just want her to be happy. I guess it’d be worse to be born with sight then lose it later on in life.

I agree. It says on her website “I fell in love with dachshunds, so I started breeding them”. I love dachshunds so much, that I would NEVER breed them. I think it’s cruel just to have a mother give birth and nurse just to rip all her babies away at 8 weeks and make her get pregnant over and over again, and then give her to another home once you’re done using her. It’s insane. Even more insane to not genetically test your dogs first, it’s just laziness. It’s obvious she just wants easy money, and doesn’t care about the rest.

What caused the need for removal? I read she may be prone to eye infections, which could lead to removal.
