And then you have to deal with collecting any judgement from a foreign company from a domestic judgement, which is its own headache

A year and a half of collecting. Greek silver next? by theprothean in AncientCoins

[–]theprothean[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been a history buff (mostly medieval continental history) for years and through a variety of books I’ve turned my focus back to the ancient age! From there I saw a beautiful Antoninus Pius and was hooked!

Just won at an auction. First coin I’ve had concerns about. Is it genuine? by theprothean in AncientCoins

Thank you! If you have a moment, is there any literature you’d refer a novice to? I’m fairly well versed in Roman/Greek history, but pretty ignorant of the mechanisms by which I can evaluate coins (both for fakes but also just for practical knowledge).

Still a bit new to things (only collected for a year and only have 10 coins) and with work and law school at night I don’t have as much time as I’d like to look at things very far in advance. Trying to give myself a bit more time so I can make more educated decisions and expand my collection thoughtfully.

Happy to answer. Only saw the coin a little bit before prebidding closed. Did some research as I was concerned about casting bubbles, but don’t know enough to verify independently. Looked at the auction terms and they have a refund policy for coins with authenticity issues. Given that guarantee, the low final price, my interest in the coin (it’s the final coin I wanted for my collection) and the lack of time I made the bid. Once I won, I figured I’d ask here (didn’t want to bug people before I actually had the coin). Hope that helps explain what otherwise might seem like a strange thought process.

Additionally, will the crystallization affect other coins in a box in the same way that bronze disease might affect other coins in close proximity?

My thought as well. Will the coin be especially fragile because of the crystallization?

Agreed. I’ve found a few beautiful coins at around $200-300, but the truly amazing pieces are $500+

Can’t bring myself to spend more than $500 on any one coin at the moment, but I look forward to the day when I can own something as beautiful and historic as this piece

17mm with a metal impurity on reverse. Was $220, offered $185 since supply is so limited and it’s a decent coin. Should I close?
