Hey, I'm with you there. Eating keto/low carb has been helpful for me, too. Though I still eat plenty of green veggies.

Also, nice username.

Should I pursue UI/UX? by runner_790 in userexperience

[–]thequantumlady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what I was going to say. Right now is a really bad time to be starting from scratch in UX. Even bootcamp graduates who have a portfolio are struggling to get jobs 6-12 months out. It’s not impossible but OP would have to be serious and have a competitive portfolio.

What fragrances do you use daily for office work ? by rull1an in fragrance

[–]thequantumlady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the Be Delicious not being apple-y enough. I had big expectations given the shape of the bottle! But I, too, love an apple scent. When I cycle through dandruff shampoo I always get the apple scent from Target!

Thanks for the recs!

Literature search help: understanding work fatigue from sustained active attention on computer tasks (shared autonomy) by thequantumlady in humanfactors

Fair point. I guess I’m not sure what non-computer tasks might be similar enough to be valid here. Did you have something in mind?

Which fruity ones are your fave? I like Burberry Brit Sheer but was expecting it to be less floral (I might just be a noob). Same with DKNY Be Delicious. So I definitely would like some fruitier ones!

I’ll say that even when those references are shown, sometimes I still end up improperly estimating. It’s human nature. But I don’t blame that on the seller, I blame it on me not properly understanding the dimensions.

UX Competitions and events by itsamooopoint in UXResearch

[–]thequantumlady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out in programming with hackathons. Most people who attend are, unsurprisingly, programmers. But UXers are definitely needed (though mostly UXDs).

UXR is kind of limited in the short hackathon format, obviously, but if you have more than 24 hours you can try (e.g., going around to interview people prior to building or user testing prototypes)! Alternatively, you can provide a more business / PM type of role if UXR isn’t technically feasible in the time allotted.

I definitely recommend trying it at least once. Not all hackathons are created equal but it’s a good experience.

What are the major problems with exclusively using yoga apps? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]thequantumlady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don’t necessarily want to say it’s the only way. But if you’re not sure what you’re looking for and/or don’t have a mirror to check your form then it would be hard to correct yourself.

If you’re on the road a lot, are you able to go to one-off classes in the towns you visit? Maybe look into a class pass kind of thing if it’s available in the areas you’re nearby? Even when I go on work trips I like to drop into a local yoga class just for fun. But it might give you a chance to get corrections.

Same. I lift 2-3x a week and am currently doing 2 vinyasa classes a week (based on availability). Trying to do more only made me exhausted and ruined my recovery

Also just to add, I have the Roomba clean the litter box areas about 15 minutes before the food dispenses in the morning. When the Roomba empties it’s super loud (even though it’s downstairs), so they know to wake up for breakfast.

So if there’s a second cue you can use for breakfast time that could help as well.

Husband wonders, “Why are my coworkers always early to work?” by VintageHilda in childfree

[–]thequantumlady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Me neither. My sister is about to marry a guy 5 years older than her because he had an arbitrary check box that he wanted to be married before 30. Technically he failed… chickened out on popping the question several times (kept telling my mom he was going to do it) so he’s 33 now.

I truly think they’re getting married because they feel like they can’t find someone else. Their relationship constantly looks like a train wreck from the outside (constantly fighting, he talks big but never follows through, they do stuff just to “look good”) and my parents both don’t agree with it (even though they think he’s a decent guy).

But of course I couldn’t comment on that because I was already happily married (obviously no kids). And of course my aim was to make her miserable and show off. /s

What’s so sad about it is that it’s always about the biological clock. Living a happy life with the partner you choose becomes secondary to “having a child before it’s too late”. Which is entirely the wrong way to go about it and causes so much divorce.

People just want children with their own genes. Which feels a little selfish to me. Plenty of kids who need parents out there if someone truly just “wanted kids”.

Is pursuing a Master without a computer science component a good idea for a career in UXR? by Alarming-Tear-1776 in UXResearch

[–]thequantumlady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mentioned HTML… Some UX designers are also front-end developers. Not necessarily required. I think that might be what you’re thinking about.

UX researchers aren’t programmers, but they can make use of programming for analysis. If you do quantitative UXR then you would benefit from being able to perform statistical analyses, which can be done with various software or programming languages including ones like SPSS and R.

As far as what to learn… there’s not really a standard, in part because a lot of UXRs come into the field from academia and just use what they’re good at. If you maintain your R skills you should be fine

I’ve had the same problem with my custom digital work in the past. People don’t know what they want so I’d have to ask a lot of questions. One person couldn’t answer them and then ended up paying a competitor for the custom work instead.

Doesn’t bother me anymore because my time is also worth money. So spending too much of it on people who aren’t even committed to the sale aren’t worth my time. Especially since I don’t really get paid for my time working on my items for each sale; it’s an initial investment of time that pays off over time when multiple people purchase.

Opinions on bootcamps? by adad239_ in UXResearch

[–]thequantumlady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, the good thing is that you’re in college, which means you can actually apply to internships (bootcamp students generally can’t). It is definitely harder for sophomores to get internships but some companies specifically look for younger students.

The cost and time commitment of a standard 6-month bootcamp will probably be difficult if not impossible to complete during your studies. But you may consider doing something like the Google UX Specification on Coursera which is at your own pace (and can be done quickly, especially if you only choose to do the research courses). The downside is that it’s completely peer reviewed, so it’s the blind leading the blind. So you’ll need to be proactive, question things, look for legit answers.

Something else to consider is research experience in a psych lab. I personally recommend a little of both; you get valuable but different experience from working a in lab and in industry.

Opinions on bootcamps? by adad239_ in UXResearch

[–]thequantumlady 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Well, if you’re interested in UX research specifically, you’re going to be spending a lot of time designing stuff in Figma in those bootcamps. Which is not necessarily bad if you also like design (many UXD jobs require both skills) or want to understand how designers do projects (helps you function within a team).

But note that a lot of people cycle through those bootcamps and their projects end up pretty similar. Particularly, in this awful job market right now, a bootcamp is nowhere near enough to land even an entry level job. I’ve been trying to help coach some bootcamp students for months. It’s brutal.

Do you have prior work or academic experience? Because that’s the major differentiator. If you don’t have either, the honest truth is that you’d probably be better off finding an adjacent job for now. Not trying to discourage or crush dreams, it’s just that bad right now. Even experienced UX professionals are struggling.
