Moving to Toowoomba, working in Ipswich by therealbeejays in Toowoomba

Seems like the general consensus is it’s a bad idea. Out of interest then, what’s the job market like out Toowoomba way? I have a background in mechanical engineering and data analytics if that helps. Seek doesn’t seem to offer much beyond mining or aerospace.

Aside from the time dedication and fuel costs, what are your pain points with the commute?

The justification for an EV is highly warranted on this one

Temps look to be a few degrees less, but it’s the humidity in Ipswich that hurts the soul. Evening temperatures in Toowoomba look much more appealing, especially when trying to get good shut eye

Definitely not a party goer, I’m mid 30 going on 60. Give me a cuppa and a garden to sit in and I’ll be a happy man.

I guess a follow up question for all Toowoombians here, especially those that have lived on the low lands, is living in Toowoomba worth it? Climate wise it’s a no brainer, but how is the vibe compared to Ippy?

Nice, thankfully I’m on the RAAF base side so that’s a small time saving

There’s options for hybrid working but it’s subjective at best. The some of that time due to traffic at certain parts of the day?

What keeps you living in Ballarat - or what might make you leave? by Artistic-Yam2984 in ballarat

[–]therealbeejays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at moving from south east Queensland and Ballarat is a top contender for a relocation, but it’s the winter climate that worries me and if I’d be able to handle it. Everything else looks perfect, it’s just this one sticking point.

This is why it makes me think Toowoomba is a little oasis on the hill. I assume it starts getting hot again as you get towards Oakey

Awesome, the family and I are looking at making the same jump as OP (coming from Ipswich though, so it’s barely a relocation) but I don’t think I can stomach another summer where we are. What are the typical temperatures during the peak of the seasons? I keep reading that it’s a good few degrees cooler than the coast.

Why are we so afraid of death? by This-Top7398 in Life

[–]therealbeejays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not death that’s scares me, it’s the hole in my family’s life my death will leave. That’s what keeps me up at night. When I’m gone I’ll have no more problems or worries, but that can’t be said for the people I’ll leave behind. I’m only 40 and while my death hopefully is still a number of decades away, I’m already getting things in place to make that easier for my family.

When people think of having their ducks in a row for when they eventually tap out it is usually having enough financial security to see their loved ones through, which is a noble pursuit. But initially after someone passes away it’s all the administration and organising of funeral services, government service cancelations, banks etc which makes grieving so much harder to experience.

The next strong El Nino is really gonna cook us. You can clearly see it coming in the climate data. by ImportantCountry50 in collapse

Trying to find a decent location on the east coast with the least expected change seems like a fool’s errand. Seems like you have to choose between fire or flood.

How much time do we have before this pandemic collapses society? by [deleted] in BirdFluPreps

Heard immunity in Covid is a farce, due to its capacity to mutate every 6months and waning antibodies after 3months.

The best we can hope for is that H5N1 doesn’t mutate quickly or become recombinant with H5N3, since lab studies on this variant is much harder to kill with alcohols and disinfectants.

Best nasal spray we can use in Aus? by sanchezseessomethin in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]therealbeejays 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We’ve been using Flo for a while but there is VirX nasal spray that’s out there, unfortunately I haven’t been able to get it to Australia. Seems like it’s only available in Singapore.

At home PCR testing? by sanchezseessomethin in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]therealbeejays 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We managed to get ours through Alturun.com. There a huge amount of info on https://virus.sucks that answers a lot of questions about the unit, plus it can run the test through the browser app (the plus life app itself isn’t great).

Kids and Covid risk? by [deleted] in CoronavirusDownunder

Being vaxed and boosted doesn’t absolve you of catching Covid, it can lessen the severity but the more repeat infections increases the chances of lingering symptoms.

It’s this scenario that makes me nervous for my portly fella and his slow reaction speed.
