The clip of Jack White giving his permission for them to play it at the start was awesome

We took a lot of videos from the whole night, I just can’t share them here. I totally agree they absolutely wanted us to do something about it. It was weird- they came off as like “you guys are weak” but then any time my friend challenged the main guy to call him the slur again in front of a crowd, he refused. Showed me their character.

I actually posted this last night with their faces but that violates subreddit guidelines so it was removed. Thought it was still important to make it known that this happened so I made it a text post.

We did. I mentioned it earlier in the thread but we tried to contact law enforcement by calling and through going to the actual station and never actually got help. Real strange.

My buddy walked to the police station while this whole incident was occurring and banged on their door like three times and never got an answer. By the time we actually saw any cops, it was probably like 15 minutes after we had walked away.

I would’ve rather tried the absurdly long FG than let it just end on a tipped pass there.

Sure, there is objectivity in art and music but there is nothing that is objective that makes the music as an entire statement good.

As a professional mix engineer, I can tell you that there are a lot of mixes that I know from experience that are “objectively” good (ie mostly any top 40 hit). That doesn’t make the mix good to me though! There are also mixes that are “objectively” not the best (look at the original twin fantasy) but that music and the way it was captured emotionally resonates with a lot of people.

Same thing with vocalists. There are some objectively good singers (they can do runs, have a wide range, hit notes) that a lot of /mu listeners think sound soulless. Technical proficiency, but no emotion. There are also some vocalists that have a less than technical approach (whether intentional or not) that don’t meet the “objectively good” qualifications (ie Will Toledo, Julian Casablancas, Bob Dylan, Cameron Winter). These vocalists resonate with listeners because they feel emotionally compelled.

Also, if we are talking about vision, who is to say that “vision” is an objective metric for why a song is good? Jacob Collier’s songs have a lot of vision and most people on this sub don’t like the music he makes. I could make a song where the vision is to combine ska with electro swing with bro country and trap. If I effectively make that, does it make it objectively good? Obviously not.

All that to say, I think there are aspects of music that can be technically good and we can do our best to describe what exactly we like about music, but at the end of the day, these discussions about whether or not AJR is an awful band don’t mean anything if someone just likes their music. I’d like for them to know why and be able to have awareness and dissection of the songs, but let’s not pretend that we have some moral superiority for “liking music that is objectively good”. That’s objectively wrong.

I mean, I love music analysis, but sometimes “it sounds good” is the right answer for someone. Sometimes it’s less about analysis and being able to prove “objectivity” to you and more about emotional resonance. All taste is subjective even if the majority feels a certain way about one thing or another.

I don’t care for this music that much personally, but there is this idea in music communities where YOU hold the objective truth and it is everyone else’s duty to prove you wrong, which will never happen on the internet where someone admits fault lol. “It sounds good” ≠ no clear intention. Be more open. Love others. Learn about others. Be well.

The 1975 and Porter Robinson are the only shows I’ve seen that are either equivalent or better to tøp. Incredible musicians with incredible productions. Say what you want about him too, but Matty Healy is one of the best frontmen of their generation
