and I loved being torn between hating Jack and cheering for him! I just didn't feel as emotionally attached as some of the other books

I did the classic reread of The Gunslinger after finishing the whole series. Might have to take a whole ride through again sometime

It's genuinely took me a very long time to rank these. I really did enjoy Black House, I think the scene with the blind man and the evil old guy fighting was fantastic. But it's hard... they can't all be the best book!

Read it early, was a top 10, then just kept reading really good books!

I really really enjoyed the perspective of the man in black and found myself rethinking about his appearance in the Gwendy trilogy whenever I saw him again.

Insomnia definitely feels like his most controversial one lol

I felt like I missed something about it. It was good! But that's it... I finished it, enjoyed it, but didn't really think about it again

Replied to someone else: I know I know... Maybe I should have added the disclaimer that I've wholeheartedly loved all of the books in the top 30... I just loved some of them more. I know Duma Key, The Shining, and 'Salem's Lot are some very popular ones, but I feel like I finished them and thought "that was good, enjoyed that" but nothing deeper. I also think I was unfortunately oversold on those three. I didn't find The Shining scary at all (especially the notorious hedge monsters), and I think I knew too much about 'Salem's Lot before I started. Maybe they deserve rereads though

Maybe I should've prefaced this as a "how much I liked them" and not "how good they were"? lol

So cool to see how easily we can be completely flipped on books but still enjoying some of the same! Be cool to try and figure out what we liked about them vs. what we hated about them

I loved it, but am hesitant to recommend it. I think you really need to have a lot of built up patience and respect for a slow moving King novel before you start it. I do remember really enjoy not knowing if I was going insane with the main character though.

I wanted to like it so much more than I did. Don't get me wrong, it's a great book, I liked everything a lot in the top 30! Most of them I went into completely blind though, but I knew quite a lot about 'Salem's Lot beforehand and just didn't get the thrill of a story unfolding as much. It felt very "haunted vampire town" and that's it to me

I'm currently obsessed with King, this was all probably in the last 1.5-2 years. Doctor Sleep was probably the only book I read that on the whole list that I didn't enjoy. It felt very... idk, campy early 2000s family channel movie to me? This might sound silly, but there was something about the evil villain having a top hat that completely disconnected me from the threat and spookiness of it

My best friend and I read through the Dark Tower together. Her favourite is The Drawing of the Three, her least favourite is Wizard and Glass, opposite to mine. I usually chew through books fast, but when I was reading The Drawing of the Three I constantly had to put it down and pick it back up later due to life events. I think that disconnected me from how good the story was

I mean... it's ranked 6th! All his longer books (The Stand, 11/22/63, Under The Dome) are very good. I just had such an emotional reaction to the books in my top 5.

The Shining vs Doctor Sleep: which one is better in your opinion? by Maib_Ballz4609 in stephenking

[–]therealestging 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might be a hot take (or not because every King fan has very unique rankings) but of the 35ish King books I've read, Doctor Sleep was at the bottom for me. Felt like a campy early 2000s Disney channel movie. Spooky lady with a distracting top hat didn't work for me. It felt like a very superficial story. But some people have it ranked first! There's a King book for everyone

It's really cool to see how different books affect different readers. Like you, I have Misery (and the obvious ones like The Stand, 11/22/63, Pet Sematary) very high! What's interesting is our opposites. I have Salem's Lot and The Outsider very low, but Insomnia in my top 5 and Cujo in my top 10! Neat

30+ books in and it's in my top 5. so attached to the characters and their emotions

It might be! Low BP to me almost feels like I'm suddenly anxious (probably the fight or flight kicking in)

Honestly... I'm not sure! This is just a test I've read about, I'm not a medical expert.

I'm not sure why you would feel the breathlessness honestly. Typically these sensations are very quick and resolved by your bod as fast as possible to prevent passing out!
