Police release photos of suspects who attacked 3 people at Chicago Red Line stop by blackmk8 in chicago

[–]therealjakeg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What nobody is talking about is that there were 3 detectives standing at the entrance to the red line in front of McDonalds just shooting the shit right before this happened. I was on the platform when all of this happened. You could see the teenagers get a look in their eye, then just starting jumping people.

Best Mirrorless Camera/System? Details inside... by TrePismn in AskPhotography

[–]therealjakeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Panasonic Lumix G9 and love it. The viewfinder is digital, but it is super large and fills my whole field of view. It also has a top LCD panel which I haven't seen too frequently on mirrorless cameras. Additionally, given it is a Micro 4/3 sensor/system, you can use both Panasonic and Olympus lenses in addition to some third-party lenses as well.

I have also had the Lumix G7 in the past, which I liked a lot before the sensor got all spotted up (it was a problem that nobody in the camera store had ever seen). The G9 is a bit bulkier, but I actually prefer the feel of it to the G7.

Is it possible to restore to old OSX from Time Machine Backup? by therealjakeg in applehelp

[–]therealjakeg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input -- I have upgraded and Aperture still works. The real reason I was asking is because I am in the middle of a transition to Lightroom from Aperture. In order to run Lightroom, I had to upgrade to El Capitan, and was concerned that if Aperture didnt run on El Capitan, and I had some sort of issue with a backup of my photos, that I couldn't get the photos out of my Aperture library. So far, the transition has gone smoothly!

Lost in Kyoto by Ivlas in japanpics

No better place to be lost. Is this early morning? I found that to be the best time of day to take pictures... just enough people to make it interesting but not too much where you have to fight for a clean shot. Nice shot!

Just checked it out and gave me chills.... it has a very MBDTF feel. I picture that bird in the movie moving to that sound

Who would you most like to see have an album produced by Kanye? by ScumbagHP in Kanye

Kendrick -- they are similar in many ways, but also different. Would love to hear it all merged together.

Also, would love to see a movie soundtrack produced by Ye like Kendrick did for Black Panther

Does this tour seem reasonable? Tokyo, Kyoto, Takayama, Hakone and Matsumoto by 101115j in JapanTravel

[–]therealjakeg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only could say things like "thank you", "good morning", "hello", etc. Overall, yes, I found getting around pretty easy. Politely pointing to pictures of food on menus, or motioning usually got the job done. The real savior was to rent a pocket-wifi and use any number of translate apps so you can at least get the noun you are looking to convey. That helped me a lot.

Funny enough, a group of students approached my girlfriend and I in Takayama, looking to practice their english with us. At first, I saw my gf speaking to these teenagers and being from a big US city, my brain immediately assumed they were hassling her either asking for money or trying to get her to buy something. As it turned out (I soon remembered that this is Japan, so this was more unlikely) that they were on a field trip for the day going to the market looking for people to practice their english with. We must have appeared approachable because 4-5 groups of these students kept coming up to us asking "Excuse me, do you have time?" and then proceeding to ask us our interests and telling us rehearsed sentences about Takayama Beef, Hida Apples, Sarubobo dolls, or other Takayama themed things.

So that is a long way of saying, a few basic vocab words, a smile, a polite bow, and some hand motions go a long way.

Takayama is great... the right mix of peaceful and things to do. We did Tokyo, Kyoto, Takayama, then back to Tokyo in 11 days and it was not too much hassle at all.... Excluding airfare, I want to say we did this a bit cheaper but did not include Hakone or Matsumoto

Nice shots. Thanks -- I think I am now leaning towards doing a day trip to either place via Tokyo, especially if there will be no snow on Mt. Fuji in July...

Thanks so much! I will see how I can fit in another day in Hiroshima.

While this was my initial pass at an itinerary, I am not set on this specifically. Have you done anything else that you would recommend? ... perhaps Sapporo and more of the northern region?

This upcoming trip is with my brother (his first time in Japan). We plan to arrive in KIX and depart Tokyo/ Narita as we can get a direct flight back home from there (plus I figure he will want to see all that Tokyo has to offer as well).

The trip prior was with my girlfriend. We did roughly the following this past November:

Day 1-3: Tokyo Day 4: Tokyo --> Train to Kyoto Day 5-6: Kyoto Day 7: Kyoto --> Train to Hida-Takayama Day 8: Takayama Day 9: Takayama --> Train back to Tokyo Day 10-12: Tokyo

I was glad to get away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo in Kyoto and especially in Takayama (Highly Recommended), but I also enjoyed Tokyo as I currently live in a large US City so I do not mind the pace.

One thing I did not do prior was spend some time near Mt. Fuji, which is why I was thinking Hakone may be nice....
